  • Call me Prometheus ✋🔥🤚, because it's time to learn a secret flame: The Capillary Candle. This Glass Wick burns Lamp Oil using capillary action and does not need replaced! It burns as little as 1g of oil per hour. I've held onto this design for several years, but after an increasing number of requests I wanted to make it publicly available. Make your own, but be careful! Fire can destroy as well as create.

      Thank you Linda! It does help to know you and others want this channel to grow. It is discouraging when I don't see the growth I was hoping for, but I know it's important to appreciate how far I've come already. If I just keep being my authentic self, then this channel won't lose what makes it special. 🔥❤️

    Hey, to increase the efficiency of your composite candles. You could have some false tubing that has open ends to atmosphere away from the oil, thus giving air a way into the core of the flame.

    I wonder if using a smaller number of wicks would have a better outcome in the final experiment? Maybe a dozen or so instead of 50? More surface area for the wicks to access oxygen, while still having enough of them to produce a sizable flame without overcrowding them.
    Anyway, they're amazing little lamps, and the 110 you did in the last vid are incredibly pretty when all lit together :-)

    • @MattJasa

      Your definitely right. I wanted to see how far I could take it with so many wicks. They act almost like one giant wick. I'll be doing some more experiments with it. Thanks for watching!

    In this youtube video a 0.4mm capillary tube will raise water 5.5cm. A 0.6mm capillary tube 3cm.
    Experiment on Capillary Action or Capillarity using Capillary Tube
    I was thinking of trying the same basic idea for some use in another experiment. Alcohol is probably not quite as good as water for climbing but as you can see diameter can be played with if you want more height, like you did by putting a tube within a tube. I've sleeved capillary tubes inside another as well. Ebay has many choices in size and length.

    Since the fuel is carried in the space between the interior and exterior tubes, does the smaller one need to be a tube or can you make a stringer from solid rod?

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  3 года назад +1

      That's a great question, I found a solid rod/stringer in the middle does work as well. I'm not sure how it fully compares without doing more testing.

    But, like with cotton wick, the question is: how long this glass wick works without obstructing its micro-holes by glass slowly melted by the flame?
    Second question: is it totally atoxic?? Because about 5 or 6 years ago i tried with a commercial glass fibers wick and cooking oil, the results were no bad but after some hours of use i had a stitch on my right belly side (i think: for intestinal irritation), more than one time, so i abandoned glass for paper or cotton wick: it's without problems but it's no more good after 15-20 hours of use (with cooking oil).
    I tried also metal sponges as wick for alcool lamp but with a very bad results. I don't remember if i tried it with cooking oil. I should try...
    I imagine that the oil in your video is kerosene or mineral distilled oil for lamps.
    In every case, your all glass oil lamps are splendid! Unique! Bravo!

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  Год назад

      Good questions. From the testing I've done the wicks don't melt but does collect a small amount of soot. The soot doesn't seem to cause any trouble and can be cleaned with a small brush.
      Being just glass I would assume it wouldn't be toxic. Sorry I don't understand what you're doing with the lamp to get intestinal irritation, are you cooking food with it? Cooking oil and lamp oil won't burn as clean as natural gas or propane. I'm not sure if the capillary candle can burn cooking oil. I should test it out to make sure.
      Thank you, thank you. The oil lamp has been a bright inspiration for me.

    • @pratoarancione7646
      @pratoarancione7646 Год назад +1

      @@MattJasa Okay, so you will try your glass micro-pipe for cooking oil lamp, did i well understand? But you must put the glass pipe in a cork floating upon the oil and protected (the cork) by aluminium foil; this is beacause the natural oil cannot climb more than 2-3 cm, contrary to kerosene which climbs 10 or more centimeters. Then, you'll tell me your results, please.
      Why do you not sell your glass pipe wick?? I would buy some...

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  Год назад

      @@pratoarancione7646 Thanks for the additional info. For the wicks, honestly, I'm afraid of the legal repercussions of someone setting their house on fire. The basic design of the vessel so far does not protect against getting knocked over, the flame will stay lit like a normal candle. I could sell them without a vessel, but I'm still in the process of opening my online store.

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  Год назад

      @@pratoarancione7646 I did a quick test by replacing the lamp oil with cooking oil (corn). The liquid does make it to the top of the wick however it won't stay lit. If I tilt the wick sideways it heats the wick more and a flame will continue to burn. I'm sorry I didn't include the cork or foil. But it looks like with a higher flash point the cooking oil is having trouble burning as easily. In theory using both cooking oil and lamp oil side by side should work as the lamp oil wick can warm the cooking oil wick, allowing it to reach flash point more easily.

    • @pratoarancione7646
      @pratoarancione7646 Год назад

      @@MattJasa Very intersting, can you show the video of the cooking oil glass wick burning, please? I'm so curious.
      RUclips showed me that you have another RUclips channel but i'm not founding it any more, can you tell me its name, please? Because there is a video about glass tube wick that i would like to see.
      I don't konw the real legal risks of selling oil lamps with open flame (like yours) to a private citizen in your country (America?) but generally (Europe, Morocco etc.) there is no problem: if the blaze arrives, the fault isn't ever of the producer but of the user, like candles elsewhere. Here in Europe you can buy all kind of jar, in metal or glass, also very basic, for burning any lamp oils at different not specified flash points... so, there is almost not legal control on oil lamps or candles... the control falls on the user. If the glass lamp falls and crashes, the blaze is not ascribed to the producer but to the user (legally). So i think you can sell your creations.
      If you dont use cork or any float for the wick the duration of the natural oil flame will be no very long, except if the jar is large.

      @MattJasa  2 года назад

      Hey Travel Canon, I did research patents. As I understand the patent protects others from selling your ideas in exchange for open documentation of the device along with some money to file. This helps others learn from your design to improve their own work without sacrificing your marketability.
      Long story short I don't have the funds to file and already documented the design here for others to use. Also I'm not big into finance, you could say I'm more of a poor philanthropist. Thanks for asking.
