John Wayne last film. I love John Wayne. His last role was done with grace and honor. I love you John. And I miss you. You sure would be sad these days. I loved this movie. Bless you. ❤🇺🇸🐎🐎🐎
High Noon was considered, historically, to be the greatest Western ever made but I believe that the Shootist is right there with it. Truly, an underrated classic. My two favorite John Wayne films were The Shootist and They Were Expendable.
It seems that The Searchers is considered the best Western of all time by directors and critics. The Shootist is excellent and like Searchers took time to earn it's place as a misunderstood masterpiece of the genre. High Noon is still fantastic,, one that could still very easily be called greatest. Another I'm personally very fond of is William Wyler's The Big Country with Gregory Peck and Jean Simmons.
The final "small talk" scene between John and Lauren breaks my heart every time. They both know what will happen in a short time, but neither makes reference to it. So understated and touching.
John Wayne was an actor and a very fine one. His films made millions of people happy, so where is there a problem? As far as I am concerned, his drinking habit was none of my business and nor were any other parts of his private life. How does anyone know that he 'refused' to go into the military? Did anyone witness it? Was anybody there? Did they hear him refuse? No! Like most other things, it is a sordid story that some people like to spread and, most probably, it's born out of envy and jealousy. I see no point in shaking the cupboard containing someone else's skeleton.
@drright10 If you look at anybody long enough the shine wears away, Staring at the mirror helps, Tempers the need to drag others down, Let them admire who they want to.
He is my HERO I can’t watch the films he dies in because I cry like if he was my dad So sadly missed such a nice man Just loved the man don’t make them like John Wayne anymore 💕💕💕💕💕
I met John Wayne when I was 6 yrs. old in Piedres Negras, Mexico just over from Eagle Pass while he was making The Alamo in Bracketville, Texas. My mother was to embarrassed to go over and get his autograph so she sent me over. Super nice and my mother still has that napkin in her cedar chest today.
Most respect to John Wayne ! A true icon of Western movies an others ! Enjoyed watching him ! I feel privileged to have watched him an still do today ! He is truly missed on the Silver screen !
I don't think it was one of his best. I actually enjoyed his later movies like "Big Jake" and even "Rio Lobo" (the second remake of "Rio Bravo") more -- and they couldn't a candle to his best work in "The Searchers," "Red River," "The Man who shot Liberty Valance," or "Rio Bravo," and so many others. But as a film about a legendary Old West gunfighter at the end of his trail, it was a superbly poignant film, and as such, made the perfect swan song for the Duke, who at that time was suffering health problems severe enough that the producers were hesitant about casting him in the picture.
I saw John Wayne once when he was filming Branagan in London. He was sitting in a Ford Capri on top of a skip on Tower Bridge being photographed by loads of photographers and I was on a double decker bus going over the bridge when I spotted him. He was always my hero and I couldn’t believe I saw him. I went home and excitedly told my mum and dad, and dad who happened to look like him and was nicknamed after him said “you should have invited him home for a cuppa tea” 😂 I wish I’d have had the guts to invite him but I think he would have mortified getting an invite from a young 20 year old. God bless Mr Wayne ❤️
THE SHOOTIST is a masterwork - career best work from Don Siegel, Duke, Lauren Bacall and Ron Howard.Final scene between Bacall and Wayne is heartbreaking.
Duke saw the lack of publicity for this film coming back then when he remarked that paramount was putting all of it's effort into promoting the remake of "King Kong". Additionally, this film cried out for a winter release, not during the mid-summer, when folks are in less of a mood for material like this. A great film, however, he should have been nominated.
We lived in Carson City during the filming. One morning we visited the set on Mountain Street where an area was set up for onlookers. Mr. Wayne rode his horse to the barrier and greeted us, thanking us for coming. He kept the horse still to allow for photographs. One of the best thrills of our lives. It was amazing to see the transformation of the city block; before, during, and after location production.
John Wayne's love of interacting with people is legendary. I was doing an electrical remodel on a house and the owner retired Army MSRGT told me of Wayne sitting all afternoon with his platoon drinking whiskey by the full water glass in Saigon, then standing up and walked out to a helicopter to go somewhere while the rest of them were trying to figure out how to stand up. Then my Uncle was telling me that some friends needed a 4th for a poker game in Tucson, so one of them got the bright idea of calling his hotel and asking that a note be sent to Mr Wayne that if he desired to play poker here was the address. A half hour later there was a knock at the door and Wayne was standing on the porch with two six packs of beer and a box of cigars. One of my college professors had a picture of he and his brothers standing next to Wayne in the Disney land parking lot, his dad had recognized him and called out and even though Wayne was in a hurry, he stopped to talk to them and take pictures. Try that with the modern Hollywood elite.
A substantial psychological profile of an aging gun man and a past quickly disappearing. To say nothing of a sense that a part of Hollywood greatness itself was about to pass away.
Never saw this behind the scene footage before but what a great movie. I guess you could say Wayne was and still is the best known actor of all. time. Always something comforting watching one of his movies. Kinda like a hot bowl of soup on a winters day.
It seems like the best actors only get nominated, and never win . for that reason I haven't watched the Oscars in years . it's turned into the same as other award shows . something for actors to express their political views .
BEST MAN IS HOLLYWOOD, I WATCHED HIM WITH MY PARENTS AS A KID, NOW I WATCH HIM WITH MY KIDS, IT WAS A GOOD MOVIE BUT STILL MAKES ME CRY EVERYTIME I WATCH IT. GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY,
My Great Grandfather went to Glendale high with John Wayne. Both statred working in the picture buisness around the same time. While Duke worked on sets, my great grandfather worked on cameras. He became a cameraman and photographer, off and on from the 1930s-1970s, excluding his time in the Military. He enlisted into the Army aircorp in 1942 as aviation photographer and Intel photographer during ww2. He served in North Africa, Europe, and even the pacific, where he had some -part in filming the atomic bomb drop. He later went into Korea in the US Airforce and never was officially discharged do to his part in classified Intel. He told my grandfather and my dad many of stories from his days in filming for Hollywood and the military.
This film and The man who shot Liberty Valance are my 2 favorites, both relied solely on acting, not special effects, panoramic scenes and with Lee Marvin as the bad guy you can't go wrong!
Amen, my friend! I would add that Jimmy Stewart's part in both, though smaller in The Shootist, completes the "full story" for why they will always remain my two favorites.
imo - Truly one of America's last great heroes. We need more men who act like John Wayne. *“I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.”* Certainly good words to live by.
Wow, this is a great one to watch. I saw THE SHOOTIST as a kid , on the big screen, in Iran of all places, with my father. Yes, John Wayne, dubbed in Farsi is another treat. LOL! It was in the later 70s and right before the Islamic revolution gave way to hardliner clerics who took over the country and limited art, music, and all sorts of self expression, especially from the West. Thank you for posting this. It brought back big emotions and memories of my father, and my love for American cinema.
load dick...god damn draft dodging womanizing drunk...nothing but a god damn actor...only movie he ever made that was any good was the Shootist...for the most part he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag....
I don't understand how anyone can compile a montage of The Duke's great quotes and not include the absolute best. Katherine Hepburn is lecturing him on the evils of alcohol and reminds him that a whole bunch of people are looking for him. Wayne's response: "And if they ain't careful they might find me".
I'm afraid you are talking about a different movie...you should put that comment on the correct video...Lauren Bacall was the leading lady in this film....
incredible gentleman and a very sad loss. there won't be another man that people aspire to like this man. He's one everyone wanted to be like and no one could.
I will admit..I personally live by those words LOL..Describes me to a tee..Too bad people in our society don't believe me until I have to remind them :-)
The Quiet man, McClintock, Undefeated, The Cowboys, She wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rooster Cogburn. All Great!! Would of loved to have meant this man..❤😢
In the 80's I was a Reno, Nevada cab driver. I drove a lady to Carson City from the airport. We went to the beautiful old part of town not far from the governor's mansion. She lived in an old two story house. It was the boarding house from this movie. What an honor to have our state of Nevada so well recreated in the Duke's last film.
HE WAS A CHICKEN SHIT, A SHAME ON MANHOOD. WHILE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF OUR TROOPS WERE DYING ON THE BATTLEFIELD; DEFENDING US, THAT CHICKEN SHIT WAS REFUSING TO GO IN THE FORCES. BIG TOUGH GUY, IF YOU KNOW ANYONE THAT DIED OR WAS BADLY WOUNDED, MALE OR FEMALE DO'NT MAKE A HERO OF HIM HE WAS A CRAP PERSON, CRAP ACTOR, BIG TOUGH GUY CALLED MARION.
I grew up with John Wayne as my hero. He was the best roll model for a boy then, and he remains so today. I cannot think of another celebrity in Hollywood with his true patriotism, love for America and unbridled support for our military. He was not afraid to speak openly about his love of country and the values that made America great. I believe that he would be terribly troubled by the liberals, progressives, and political correctness which is tearing this country apart. We need leaders with his convictions, morality, values and fortitude if we are to survive those seeking to destroy America.
infinightsky absolutely. .furthermore there is wanted on higher levels pure power, greed, and control.... Stii a great place to live...but at this rate of internal corruption...how long...this includes not only corruption in government, but corporate America, and the Catholic church.... Shtf has already arrived internally.....
infinightsky That's exactly what he's saying. All right-wingers believe that the only true Americans are as conservative as they are and can't see that both conservatives and liberals have contributed to making this country great. A bit of historical irony: Wayne never served in the military because he made so much money for the studios they wouldn't let him go.
+infinightsky I am! FDR used the Constitution for toilet paper. Today at least 80% of what the federal government does is unconstitutional. That's not to say John Wayne was some kind of saint and has nothing to do with him at all, but liberals have been nothing but a curse for the US. Our Founders were classic liberals and the opposite of today's socialist liberals. As for John Wayne, he was an actor.
+Jody Parker Liberals have just about destroyed the Constitution and it's basic precept of a VERY limited federal government. We are nowhere near as free as before FDR. Yes, some things are better, such as racial justice, but FDR did nothing to further that. What he did do was lock Americans in race-based concentration camps without even a charge and send shiploads of Jews back to Hitler to die and banned the possession of gold, thus stealing 64% of the American people's wealth during a depression he made much worse and last years longer. His massive expansion of federal power left us less free.
I was lucky I got to meet john Wayne when we went on a field trip in the 4th grade I remember shaking his hand he was a big man.. we even met his wife.. never forget that as long as I live..
Marco He was rejected from the navy because of his knee. He was also in his 30's when WW2 broke out. If i had a smelly Italian name like yours, i would avoid bringing up ww2. Italians would surrender at the sound of fireworks going off. They make the French look brave
One of my all time favourites. Classis and seminal.. What a screen presence Duke had... Not seen it repeated to date.. A few come close like Clint Eastwood and Sam Elliot who I also like a lot but they are a different generation and unique in their own way..
Great to see this behind the scenes footage of possibly one of the best western movie actors seen in our time.A genre made for him in my opinion. Also at the end of the footage it was interesting to see a young Ron Howard,no doubt taking in all the behind the scenes goings on,readying himself for his successful directing career to come.
Wayne was a class act. I very much agree with his position that films haven't gotten more violent. It is just that we now SEE that violence as never before. And along with Wayne I see that as a bad thing. To Wayne and many of his peers ACTING was the thing. It is too easy to let the camera do all of the work. I miss Wayne, along with many other of the old time movie "stars".
The Duke was a Man's Man, a Patriotic American, and a great role model. He never professed to be perfect, and admitted his failings. He led by example, inspired, and will forever be admired. This is his last movie, and perhaps his best.
This is all the proof I need that there is a higher power behind this ride. John Wayne, ELVIS, Tupac, and all of the songwriters and movie writers who if honest will tell you they received their inspiration and guidance from another, almost soft voice in their head telling them what to do and where to be in the right moments. Most of us are just survivors trying to get by but occasionally a very great person comes along who touches the hearts of the rest of us.
What a great man he was and a nice voice ,he was born at the right time for that kind of movies 100% American whit a passion for his country and and our freedom ,our older generation had good heros ,thats what's missing today boys (and girls )need a heros someone to look up to so thay can try to imitations , today our young people only have hate and confution
I'll NEVER Get-Over John Wayne's NOT BEING WITH US..GONE! Still remember exactly where, when, & what I was doing when I heard (car radio!) that 'The Duke' was dead...
David A. Moore Working nites in a patrol car. Partner brought the whiskey, and we got drunk as skunks. Had pre-arranged for dispatch to not gives any calls. What a nite, but we couldn't bring him back. Shootist was the best for last as a statement about his health and ultimate cause of death. Hondo was his best, High Country very good, Searchers a definite Oscar full movie. Miss ya, big fella.
seahawk528 I was packing to move when I heard the news. I sat down and started crying. my husband at the time called my mother because he didn't understand why I was crying. She asked if I had heard the news about John Wayne? when he said yes, my mother told him that growing up it was my father, John Wayne and God that meant the most to me. But she was never certain in what order those three were in. I miss him always. In fact my son will not marry someone who has not heard of John Wayne.
Had just heard of his passing on TV as my mom was coming in the back door. My sister and I ran to the kitchen and I told her, "Mom, John Wayne just died!" And my sister knocked me to the ground! She wanted to be the one to tell her.
This man was one of the greatest actors ever! He saw the future of filmmaking and wasn't crazy about it. He was one of the greatest actors in the history of Hollywood there will never be another one like him or his kind. I'm only 48 years old but I love these kind of old westerns back before technology computers in everything that has corrupted the world this was a simpler time the greatest generation
Mr Wayne would have served in the military, but he was 4F because of his football injury. He truly had a love for this country, he would be spinning in his resting place if he knew they way this country is going.
+Centerfields Duke was first in line to finesse his draft board into deferring him. The reason? His career had just taken off, and if he went away like so many others did, his career would be fininshed. He was such a hypocrite. He publicly called draft dodgers and resistors during the Vietnam era "cowards", "communists", and other things (in private) that are best not written down. However, his own behavior was no different when it was his turn to put it all on the line.
I'm Canadian but I agree with you mostly, it's not America that is worse off with his passing, it's all of North American society. The guy's views become more relevant and accurate every year.
I like John Wayne, but he was not 4F he was 3A. A deferment given to men of draft age who had families that depended on them for support. He was, at this time, already the father of four.
The shootist, and of course True grit. My favourite Wayne films. RIP Duke, you're not missing much, the world is completely insane now.
I have a photo of my dad with John Wayne when my dad was in the navy. It sets on the mantel above my fireplace. Two great men gone.
I watch this movie every time it’s on.. will never ever be another John Wayne
This has always been my favorite John Wayne move.....and one of my favorites period!
Stewart , Wayne and Lee Marvin in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, a John Ford classic. Stewart and Wayne you could not go wrong, iconic actors .
John Wayne has been gone for many years but I still love that man!! What an amazing man, what an amazing actor, there'll never be another like him.
Wayne surprisingly looks great here, despite his health problems.
John Wayne last film. I love John Wayne. His last role was done with grace and honor. I love you John. And I miss you. You sure would be sad these days. I loved this movie. Bless you. ❤🇺🇸🐎🐎🐎

Real Movie Stars. The Duke, Lauren Bacal, James Stewart, john Carradine, Gone But Not Forgotten. R.I.P

The final "small talk" scene between John and Lauren breaks my heart every time. They both know what will happen in a short time, but neither makes reference to it. So understated and touching.
The standard of manhood for at least three generations. A personal hero of mine.

Congrats, great lifetime memory. I've heard from a couple of others who were lucky enough to have met him that Mr. Wayne was courteous to his fans.

So good to hear his voice and to see him interact with individuals. Miss this Real Man!
Whenever I see a John Wayne movie, John is alive to me one more time, I always wish I was that good a man,
hugh stephenson perhaps you are? Just in a different way...
+Andrew Wilson Wayne was also a self-confessed battered husband!
Andrew get some help for your anger issues.
1gallimaufry John Wayne became a super patriot because of his guilt at not fighting in WW2! I don`t know what I would have done!
One of the best all time actors. Hands down. Rest In Peace John
Are suggesting that millions and millions of liberals/progressives are tearing down the USA?
infinightsky absolutely. .furthermore there is wanted on higher levels pure power, greed, and control....
His massive expansion of federal power left us less free.
have always loved John Wayne. i own about 40 of his movies. may he always Rest In Peace. still miss him to this day.
They don't make stars like John Wayne any more.
R I P Duke
The was only one John Wayne. No one will ever take his place.
No matter how much they try. God I hate *_they_*
@Leo Peridot Just like idiots who can separate the art from a man and his times.
@Leo Peridot Oops, oh wise one. I didn't mean to offend you. I mean "can't".
I was lucky I got to meet john Wayne when we went on a field trip in the 4th grade I remember shaking his hand he was a big man.. we even met his wife.. never forget that as long as I live..
The Shootist, True Grit and The Searchers, my favorite John Wayne movies
You missed the The Quiet Man, possibly his best work.
And The Cowboys too!
Coyote Is Acting Funny Yes, The Cowboys my favorite!
I never thought I would say this when I first saw this movie, but I now think it ranks up there with his best....
A great american man, who should be truly missed by all. Because there'll never be another like him, ever......
SOME TIMES IT IS GOOD TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT
Marco He was rejected from the navy because of his knee. He was also in his 30's when WW2 broke out. If i had a smelly Italian name like yours, i would avoid bringing up ww2. Italians would surrender at the sound of fireworks going off. They make the French look brave
Marco pollo can F.O.
James the talentless c/sucker.
A great movie..and the sequence at the beginning which shows John Wayne at different times during his career was inspired.
Its true what you write or say when it comes from your heart. I think thats what made John an interesting man. Long live Mr Wayne
One of My All-Time-Favourite Actors John Wayne
Excellent upload
the Searchers, the Quiet man and Rio Bravo ,oh and Hondo were my favorites.
You must be a mind reader Zatoichi One, those aremy favourite Wayne films as well!
Great film, great actor, I have enjoyed his films all my life, (68 years old ) the likes of John Wayne have passed into history.
Ein Western ohne John Wayne?
Geht nicht!!
Vielen Dank für Schöne Western die ich mit meinem Vater nachts (zum Ärger meiner Mutter) geschaut habe
John Wayne and Johnny Cash are 2 of the best men the world was graced to know. Miss them both.
In a few words “Mr America” RIP John a movie legend.
I love John Wayne. My late mom watched every movie he ever made. She was his biggest fan.🤗
most loved acter in my opinion in history
One of the very best movies.
Fantastic footage. Thanks for posting.
This is awesome. Thanks.
He had dozens of great movies. This one was one of them and he finished strong IMHO... RIP...
What a pleasure it was to grow up watching john Wayne the actor.
“Idol to all”..never will The Duke be forgotten..one could still hear the humility in his voice..sadly for us they don’t make them like this anymore!!
One of the most true honest and best actors I ever grew up watching I wish she was alive today so I could have met him like my dad did in Deadwood
this is my personal favorite john wayne movie. first rate cast and realistic historic portrayal. better than average treatment of an era by hollywood
LEGEND
This man was one of the greatest actors ever! He saw the future of filmmaking and wasn't crazy about it. He was one of the greatest actors in the history of Hollywood there will never be another one like him or his kind. I'm only 48 years old but I love these kind of old westerns back before technology computers in everything that has corrupted the world this was a simpler time the greatest generation
Seems so easy, until you actually try it. Actors are simply great!
Mr Wayne would have served in the military, but he was 4F because of his football injury. He truly had a love for this country, he would be spinning in his resting place if he knew they way this country is going.
+Centerfields Bullshit, he was a draft dodger, you're a fucking liar.
The guy's views become more relevant and accurate every year.
tgjguitar An unlikely story. There were other means of contacting him available at the time. This just seems a made-up rationale by Wayne.
I like John Wayne, but he was not 4F he was 3A. A deferment given to men of draft age who had families that depended on them for support. He was, at this time, already the father of four.
Really enjoyed seeing this thanks for posting it.
+BATJAC J.W ..Like the username pal (i wonder how many know what it stands for? ) John Wayne was the best.
Your one of the few that know. Thanks buddy.
Batjac was the name of John Wayne's independent production company, formed in 1952 as Wayne/Fellows Productions
