This really is Schuberts greatest piece. Schubert knew that less can be more. That silence can be music. That it can be a scream
I can't understand the words, but I think the song does not just speak of sadness, but of something deeper, like a feeling of total desolation, with no more hope-

Yes - you are right! Maybe that is why it touches me so deeply. The tune perfectly matches the words.
Splendid translation.I'll pass over the double entendre in the fourth stanza, but 'Lieders' jars. Any more English-sounding alternative?

die wenigsten wissen das aber die Person die vom Leiermann erzählt ist der Tod höchst persönlich.
Meiner Meinung nach ist das einer der schönsten Lieder aller Zeiten. Nur wenige Musikstücke sind so tiefsinnig wie das hier.
Sgt Elmex Ich weiß jetzt es auch, und ich habe Angst. Der Tod erzählt so ruhig und leise, als ob das Märchen dem Kind.

Diese ist m. E. die beste Aufnahme dieses Liedes, die es gibt. Ich habe die Schallplatten vor 50 Jahre gekauft und finde die Auffuehrung dieses Liedes immer noch erschuetternd.
As far as I am concerned, this is the best recording of this song there is. I bought the records fifty years ago and still find the performace of this song heart-rending.

we heard this once in music lessons several years ago. and it is one of three melodies i have never forgotten ever since i listened to it once. Schuberts Winterreise has such a Powerfull last song

Ich bin auch durch den Film "Brügge sehen ... und sterben?" auf diese Seite gekommen; dieses Stück war mit Abstand das eingängigste und hervorstechendste des gesamten Soundtracks (welcher ansonsten sehr gut ist)! Ungeachtet der eigenen Strahlkraft dieses Stückes muss angemerkt werden, dass auch die Szene bzw. Bildsprache im Film genial dazupasst und vom Regisseur perfekt umgesetzt wurde ... siehe Videoantwort. Ach ja: vielen Dank für's reinstellen.

Its melody is haunting - pure genius! Schubert really knew how to write a tune, and this is perfectly suited to the words. For some reason, this touches me - in every rendition - every time I hear it.
Sublime interpretación, me conmociona escuchar algo tan perfecto como desgarrador. Colosal el inmenso Hans Hotter.
Ich finde es irgendwie erstaunlich, wie viele Englische Kommentare hier sind. Hätte nie gedacht dass sie so viele Leute ( auch außerhalb Deutschlands ) bsw. Schubert anhören. Irgendwie hat dieses Lied etwas beruhigendes, aber auch etwas "schauriges" an sich ( finde ich ).
Diese Kommunikationsplattform ist eben überproportional im englischsprachigen Raum präsent, der Überhang von englischen Kommentaren also kein Wunder. Ansonsten ist es kein Geheimnis, dass die Weltgeltung der deutschen Sprache seit den beiden verlorenen Kriegen nach Kräften ignoriert und zurückgedrängt wird - am meisten von deutschen "Meinungsmachern" selber. Fatal! Der weltweiten Geltung der deutschen Kunst tut das aber nach wie vor keinen Abbruch.
Wahrscheinlich kennen die meisten Deutschen das Lied nicht :))

Wir dürfen das Leiden nicht als unschön bewerten. Vielleicht ist es sogar die höchste Form des Glücks.
Und der Film war perfekt. Ich werde allein dafür einmal im Winter nach Brügge gehen müssen.
Das Bild zeigt einen Leierkastenmann. In Schubert´s Lied ist jedoch ein anderes Musikinstrument gemeint, nämlich die Drehleier, einem Instrument mit Ursprung aus dem 12. Jahrhundert.
The Image shows us a hurdy-gurdy man. But Schubert´s song means a different instrument - namely a wheel fiddle with origins back in the 12th century.

I had to suppress a smile at your description of this piece as 'relaxing and calm', as it is a song of desolation, and perhaps of acceptance to our 'traveller' that no matter what the pain he feels, no one else cares about him in their own busy lives. And so he identifies with the old man playing his hurdy-gurdy to public indifference, and only the growling of the local dogs in reaction.

Say what you want to say. I think Hans Hotter was the very best in this song. I like the ealry Fischer-Dieskau also, but Hotter sings this in F minor. Hotter was a Bass-Baritone. Kurt Moll was also great but this Hotter version (Kurt Molls recording was done digitally) is extremly great. There are other Hotter recordings of Winterreise. Michael Raucheisen 1945 and Erik Werba 1965. I have never heard the Hotter/Werba recording, which was done for DGG.

I‘m nine years late but he is singing about a man making music in the streets to earn money in the cold winter, but no one cares and everyone ignores him.

Leiermann is basically a starving beggar playing the hurdy-gurdy (in german it's Drehleier). That instrument was pretty easy to learn and play, just had to crank the wheel and use the few keys, but it had high maintenance and since beggars had little money the sound it made was warped and noisy. Thats why the instrument fell from grace since it was being associated with beggars.
At the end of the song the singer (depending on your interpretation it can be death) basically gave the beggar company, asking him to play while he sang.
Here is my singable, rhyming version in English:

staggers through the cold.

in his battered bowl.

The composer identifies himself with the beggar. He sees him a reflection of himself, begging for recognition and love. Nobody cares for both , so the composer ask that harrowing question at the end.

Ich finde die Idee dass der leiermann der Tod selbst ist. Habe hier aber auch schon die Interpretation gelesen dass das lyrische erzählende ich selbst der Tod sei was ich auch genial finde.

Der Sänger ist der Tod und bietet dem Leierkastenmann an, sein Sein zu beenden.
Ein wenig spät dran, aber du solltest auf jeden Fall das gesamte Werk hören. Die "Winterreise" erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes, der gebrochen durch die Zurückweisung seiner Geliebten sich auf eine verzweifelte Wanderschaft in den Winter begibt. Dies ist das letzte der Gedichte/Lieder des Zyklus. Vielleicht hift das bei deiner Interpretation :)

@CoastalFlyFish A "Leiermann" is a guy, who plays a "Leierkasten". I think in English it´s called "hand-organ". The word is a bit old-fashioned. In Germany you would call him "Drehorgelspieler" today.

Bariton... ist nicht mein Fall, finde ich unpassend. Klingt zu sehr nach Saft und Manneskraft. Es gibt eine Version, die von einer dünnen Altmännerstimme gesungen wird. Gespenstisch... perfekt. Leider habe ich den Namen des Sängers vergessen.
Was gibt es denn eigentlich an "Saft und Manneskraft" auszusetzen?!
