A 9 minute long creature feature? thats what im talking about! Thank's Kristian for your amazing content and your involvement in the community!
You’re welcome!! Will be trying to get these as long as possible moving forwards 😁
@@SHARKBYTES It's a win win for everyone!
Absolutely brilliant channel lad👏👍
What a coincidence, I throw up my stomach contents as a diversionary tactic when faced with a predator too!
hahahahaha - i think many would!
The fact that four years is a limit in fresh water was new to me. Enjoyed the show as always. And YES, bull sharks are my favorite!
Its pretty cool right!
Haven't seen the video yet, but the longest case we know about was 10+ years in freshwater. So they can love their whole lives in fully fresh water, though I'm not aware if they can reproduce. Limiting factor is food
There is a more recent Shark Bytes about bull sharks that lived in a large pond at a golf course for 17 years.
@@rruthlesslyBrisbane Australia
Kristian, here goes an interesting fact about bull sharks: in Brazil, almost all shark species have the same name as in English, that is, the names can literally be translated. However, bull sharks are very different. Here, bull shark translated to English would be "flat-head shark".
Yeah, in Spanish tiburón toro (literally mening bull shark) is a different species altogether.
I mean makes sense
Great video! I really appreciate how long the new episodes of Shark Bytes are. Thanks for putting in so much work. P.S I'd love to see you play more 'Man-Eater'.
Maneater content is in-bound for season 5 i promise!
@@SHARKBYTES Awesome, can't wait!
I grew up in Florence, AL. TVA's system of dams along the Tennessee River made this a haven of connected lakes, rivers, and creeks. Florence is 400 miles from the coast.
Fishing just below Wilson Dam, would sometimes (rarely) catch small sharks - river sharks we called them, never realizing they were just babies of a big bad species. When I think of all the hours I spent in and on the water...
Absolutely loving these longer Creature Features! I had no idea about those high testosterone levels in Bull sharks so that was super interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing a Creature Feature on Zebra sharks soon!!!
ahhh yes i've gotta get those zebra sharks on a creature feature asap
Loving the longer creature features!!!!
Thanks Melanie!
Bull Sharks are my second favorite species, first being Tiger Sharks, and 3rd being the Cookie Cutter Shark. Great video!!
I’ve got to get a creature feature on cookie cutters asap!!
@@SHARKBYTES Oh 100%, they’re not talked about enough tbh
Mako sharks have for a long time been my favorite animal of all time. I would absolutely love to see a combined creature feature on both the longfin- and shortfin mako.
I'll definitely get them on the list!
Mako and thresher are my two favourites. With Blue right behind.
Bull sharks are my 4th favorite type of shark, mainly because of their cool adaptations. I did learn about them throwing up their stomach content as juveniles, i didn't know that before.
Such an interesting defence mechanism right!?
Love this creature feature! Great video as always.
Thanks Archie!
Awesome content, as always! I would love to see you do one on The Oceanic Whitetip. Jacques Cousteau thought they were the most dangerous shark in the ocean. I think they're fascinating.
Second on the oceanic white tip 👍
One of Cousteau's movie featured the crew butchering Whitetips just for the pleasure of it.
When I was 12 in '92-ish I went snorkelling in the Florida Keyes but because there had been poor weather there was no one else around, so I thought it was great. It's just me and the wild blue yonder. Unfortunately, the sediment had been churned up and I couldn't really see anything, so after about 5 to 10 minutes I thought I'd go back in. However, a pod of dolphins turned up and started dipping and diving around me (most likely looking for food) but they were ultra-friendly, brushing up against me and wanting to play. They were letting me hold onto them and pulling me through the water etc. I thought I was the aquatic Francis of Assisi. Obviously, my naivety was astounding but it was such an incredible experience that I went with it.
Anyways, after maybe 15 minutes the dolphins shepherd me to the shoreline and I figured while it was an amazing experience, that was it and so should go back in.
The people we were staying with were hosting a BBQ and I approach the fella who owned the house, telling him all about my experience, assuming this was normal for him but ace for a tourist... He was flabbergasted, chastised me for going out in choppy waters and said if there were dolphins around, I was probably being hunted by bull sharks. Whether this was true or not I don't know, however, a couple of years later a fatal attack happened in the same area and a bull shark was to blame.
Maybe dolphins protecting humans from sharks is a myth and I certainly wouldn't bet my house on it being true, but maybe on this occasion, even by accident, those dolphins helped me out.
Lovely 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I’ve always found it so interesting and fascinating that they can swin up rivers!
Such a cool shark!
How are you not a bigger channel?! Your material is so well researched and your delivery is interesting and engaging. And youre an attractive guy too! 😜 Heard about you from Hal from Sharks Happen . Glad he shouted you out because you are definitely one of my favorite shark binge channels !! Can't wait to watch this channel grow 😊
The damn RUclips algorithm!! Glad you’re enjoying Shark Bytes though 😁
I just looked at the numbers for the first time. Omg, I thought the channel was much bigger. It's so professional
I love sharks and I know alot about them. How about a video about hammerheads
Extremely informative! TY!
You are more than welcome Sheryl!
An interesting creature sub-feature might the Lake Nicaragua shark, which is apparently a bull shark that "jumps the rapids of the San Juan river like a salmon". I haven't been able to find a lot of info on bull sharks doing this or the Lake Nicaragua population in general beyond what's already in wikipedia
Thanks for sharing! I love your interesting and informative videos!
Love your videos and they are always very informative. More videos please
I'll keep 'em coming Amanda!
Always excited to see your post notifications pop up!
Glad i can provide Abby 😁😁
You know what... you were right. I loved this one.
I remember an old story from Rockhampton, Qld that was never really verified.
Apparently a fisherman witnessed a hell of a sight when a bull shark seemed to charge him. Turned out, it wasn't charging him, but running away from the big salt water croc that was chasing it.
Bull shark lost in that story.
Just because they can be volatile and aggressive, doesn't mean they shouldn't be protected. After all, we protect people who are just as aggressive and volatile, why shouldn't we throw some of that in the direction of an important species we've decimated over the years?
I look forward to seeing more of your videos as I binge through them
Glad you enjoyed this one! It was real fun to make 😁😁
Loved watching you play the shark game and swimming away from the crocs in panic! 😂😂😂
Great work as always :) would love to see a basking shark video!
I gotta get a creature feature on these big guys asap
Can't wait 🤙
I would like a video that helps distinguish requiem shark species. With the exception of Tiger and maybe bull and lemon shark most of the other species like silky - dusky-galapagos-grey reef-sandbar-spinner -copper are really hard to tell from one another
Very informative vid! Love your work
Cheers Tobs!
This was fascinating. I always learn something new. ❤
What was your favourite fact? 😁
@@SHARKBYTES I had heard that bull sharks could survive in both fresh and salt water, but I didn’t know the details. It was interesting to hear about their organ functions and lifecycle of when they use each water area. It all makes complete sense. I appreciate detailed explanations like that, and enjoy your delivery.
Since you mentioned working on a nurse shark paper, perhaps you could do a deep dive into them, as you probably have the most up to date information and perhaps some personal anecdotes.
Thank you for this channel!
Loving the longer Creature Features. Plus you don't have to worry about what if to provide in a minute. Some awesome info on Bull Sharks. Love learning new.things about these amazing creatures. Looking forward to learning more. 😀 As for the Man-Eater game, I enjoy the commentary more than the actual game, but yeah sure. Why not. Also family is enjoying learning about sharks from an expert. We are eager to learn more.
I’ll keep the longer content coming!!!
Great video! Can we have a creature feature on our UK local Blue sharks please?
I’ll make sure Blues are on the list!
That would be awesome!
Awesome facts! Love your videos so interesting and fun! Please can you maybe do a creature feature on the cookiecutter shark, or the epaulette shark I find them pretty fascinating and completely adorable!
I'll make sure cookie cutter is on the list Kez, did you see our shorter creature feature on Epaulettes in an earlier season of shark bytes?
@@SHARKBYTES amazing thanks so much! Ohhh really? Will check it out 🙂
@@kez7521 hope you enjoy it! Make sure you comment on the video if you do!
Good to see you back!
Great to be back Karen!
loved this video um if i could suggest another shark to do a creature feature on it would be the blue shark
Love my blues, hopefully i'll be able to get out in the water with them soon, and do a creature feature in water with them!!
Must've been a Bull in Matawan Creek that time. Guess what a Great White lacks in lbs per square inch, it makes up for with those serrated. Great vid.
I remember a while back, 2 guys on a nature documentary, forget where, jumped off a rocky headland into waste high water, full of Bulls, who started getting a bit "inquisitive". Rather them then me !
Sounds like a very dicey encounter John 😳😳😳
That'd probably be Erich Ritter, buddy - he was a bit mad.
@@surfrider986 Checked on RUclips, there's actually a 2.25 min clip, Dicovery, 14 years ago, 9.7 M views !
"Shark Expert Attacked While Filming"
Largish Bull actually takes a bite at matey's calf !
@@johnmcnulty1129 An accident waiting to happen. I kinda have mixed feelings about Ritter myself. On the one hand he frequently bravely entered the water with large Bull sharks to back up his theories. On the other he didn't seem that nice a guy, blaming others for his attack and being a bit of a jerk in general.
I'd love to see you do a video about the bull sharks in the Australian golf club lake or w/e it is. I've wondered what will ultimately happen to them.
I should definitely have mentioned this in the video, or could be good for its own video you're right!
So happy to be a new subscriber! Thank you HAL from SHARKS HAPPEN for suggesting this channel😊
Welcome to Shark Bytes Jen!
I love Bull Sharks! They are probably my favorite shark species. It’s sad that their vulnerable, last time I checked their conservation status they were near threatened. It sucks to see their population get even smaller because they are an amazing shark.
They're an awesome shark - hope you enjoyed the creature feature
I don't believe they are endangered there's too much icompetent and dishonest people at modern science, so I wouldn't believe everything some nerd says over the internet
Super fun to watch, would love to hear more about the other fresh water shark species
I think we had a previous episode on the northern river shark that you might enjoy! Just a short one though
OOOOO Bull Sharks are in my top 3 favs! Great video as usual!
Definitely an awesome shark species
i enjoy watching these shark videos as i have an interest in them, curious to see you do a feature on the rare prickly shark
hahahaha i love those chunky boi's!
Because English is my second language and I started learning about sharks in French first, I've had a hard time differentiating bullsharks (in French requin bouledogue, which translates to bulldog sharks) and sand tiger sharks (in French requin taureau wich actually translates to bull shark...) I've always known that bull sharks are aggressive and could live in rivers and to be honest sand tiger sharks and their freaking teeth do look the part! I still have a hard time reminding myself that sand tigers sharks are actually quite peaceful.
Actually such a placid shark species the sand tiger! You’re absolutely right, with those teeth they definitely look a lot scarier than they really are
@@SHARKBYTES they would make an interesting creature feature. Great video as always :)
One thing I remember of these sharks is the multiple times i have seen photos of crocodiles feeding on baby bull sharks.
Thats so true, i;ve seen those pictures as well!
When I hear "opportunistic predators" I hear "pools are a wonderful invention" 😂
Loved that you mentioned Maneater, this game deserves so love ❤️
I gotta play it again!
@@SHARKBYTES I would love to see that! I’ve completed the vanilla campaign, totally worth it
@@rique3012 I promise I’ll get back on maneater soon! Have you seen the video we have on shark bytes where I played it?
@@SHARKBYTES Yes! That was so much fun, the alligators were giving you a hard time hahaha

Hey Kristian! I just recently discovered your channel a few days ago and I absolutely love your content!! Your videos are entertaining, educational, objective and overall enjoyable for a marine biology enthusiast like myself. Watching your videos gives me a lot of inspiration and enthusiasm. It's always been my dream to study marine biology and I'm about to start studying biology soon.
You mentioned in your videos that you wrote a paper on the impact of fishing nets on sharks, if I remember correctly? I'd love to see a video on that! I've been researching the impact of commercial fishing on marine ecosystems and I'd love to learn more about how sharks are affected by ghost nets.
Also, I believe I'm not the only one who'd enjoy another Maneater video :)
Keep up the great work and thank you for your content!
Hi! Welcome to the channel, it’s great to have you on board!! I’m so glad you’re going to be studying biology soon, and hopefully marine biology in the future! I should definitely do a video on my sharks/plastic research. If you ever wanted to read it though, I’m more than happy to email the pdf over to you!
Absolutely loved this video. I would definitely love more like this one. It's easy to make these videos of the popular sharks. Make every other video about a lesser known species. Love your work!
Nice work! I'm slowly going through your other videos. I do love the movie commentary ones. Going back to bull sharks, they're one of my favorites. Luckily, I live near the Indian River Lagoon in Florida which is a known bull shark nursery. I've seen a few pups , and a couple larger (still juveniles though) while kayaking. They're always cool to see, but they don't stick around long though.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the content Ken!
It would be cool to see a long form video with this sort of style, 9 minutes is great but I always end up starving for more!
I love this one! I really love any facts about sharks but the sharks that can swim in brackish waters are pretty amazing! I had no idea that baby bull sharks could throw up their food to help get away from predators. That's pretty cool. One of my favourite sharks is a thresher shark so if you every have time to do a creatur feature on them I'd love to here I! As always love your weekly shark bytes info!
I would love to see a creature feature of a fresh water stingray. They are big and flat and deserve some love.
Flappy flaps need love, agreed
Fascinating stuff! Thanks!
Bullsharks are also in my personal top3 😊
Thank you for this awesome creature feature❤
I recently listened to a podcast series about Réunion Island and all the bull shark attacks there. Insane how many people bull sharks killed around this very tiny island
I should definitely do a whole video about reunion island for sure Austin!
Hi, thanks for the video, really interesting. I am an old fanatic about sharks, but I don’t know much about the Thresher shark, a fascinating variant of this much maligned animal.
we did do a shorter creature feature on threshers in an earlier season of shark bytes, have you checked it out Matt?
Thanks, Kris. another top notch video, I particularly loved the small sharks' surprise defense mechanism 😀I know Erich Ritter did a lot of research on Bull sharks and was even badly bitten once. Any thoughts on him and the research he produced?
I know he was a pretty outspoken chap, but i'd need to read some more of his stuff before coming to any conclusions on his research. God, more reading to do hahahaha
@@SHARKBYTES Hey, buddy! Don't sweat it, not that important although guess it may be interesting to you some time down the line. Don't wanna add to your already heavy reading list😅
@@surfrider986 I’ll definitely make sure to check it out at some point for sure 😁😁
@@highcountrydelatite So you tirelessly bleat on about. So what?
@@highcountrydelatite You're replying to my post, buddy with a totally irrelevant point. Maybe you have been attacked by a bull shark, maybe you haven't. No-one cares.
Very cool video and content in general 👍 I found it via Robert Marc Lehmann‘s channel. Please continue your excellent work! And I would be happy to watch a creature feature video about the mako shark some day 😉 keep it up!
MERRY CHRISTMAS, thanks for the great videos.❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Would love to see a video on sharks and scuba divers, and how to dive safely with them, how the risks differ from surfers/swimmers, and any advice you have for divers who love sharks but don't want to get eaten or hurt the shark
Wow I didnt know a lot about bullsharks What a cool shark 😁 Thank you for this
You've got some cool facts now though!
Hey another great video keep up the great channel and content, would love a creature feature on the Great white Shark & Cookie Cutter Shark also do you think you would ever do creature feature
on extinct shark species
Great white and cookie cutter, i'll make sure they're on the list. Extinct sharks are definitely not my forté, although i've been meaning to do edestus for a fan of the channel for a while though!
I watched this again and I watch Sharks Happen (btw would love a collaboration between you two). So I have two questions. 1) Shark Week once showed bull sharks stirring up the ocean floor to make the water murky during hunting. Is this factual and a common method of hunting for them? 2) Shark happens goes over shark attacks and several have documented a bull shark pulling the victim to deeper water. Often, more bull sharks are waiting and they share the meal. Is this common, that bull sharks hunt in number? Thanks as always for answering questions. Love the show, love sharks!
you should definitely do your next creature feature on the wobbiegong! (also you should play some more man eater
Love wobbegongs! I think i've definitely got to get back on Maneater as well
Those testosterone levels are mind blowing! Found you via Wild World... I'm absolutely terrified and obsessed with sharks... In fact just the entire ocean. Thanks for the fascinating content about fascinating creatures.
Great video!
Thanks Mary!
Educational video. Thanks.
Another banger of a vid, mate! Bull sharks are one of my fav species, they just kinda look like friends LOL.
I'd really love to hear more about Climate Change's effects or predicted effects on sharks/marine systems. Do you have any recs on resources to learn more?? I'm an environmental scientist but I study mostly soils and agriculture, so I'm looking to expand my knowledge base further.
I know Nick Dulvy has done some stuff on climate change and sharks, GJ Osgood and JK Baum as well!
@@SHARKBYTES thank youuuuu, I'll check them out!
ay love the bull shark keep up the great videos
Such an awesome shark species!
I live in an area of Sydney that is a known bull shark breeding ground, and the fatal attack in Sydney prior to Simon Nellist was there. The water there is pretty murky, so it's pretty cary when we fall in knowing there are big sharks below us
In murky water for sure!
Great episode
As usual, well-researched and interesting content! I appreciate these sharks may be under threat worldwide but in certain places like Recife and Reunion Island constant attacks by Bulls (and to a lesser extent Tiger sharks) have led to the prohibition of all water activities (swimming, surfing etc.) and selective culling programs.
The Reunion Island stuff is actually so wild
@@SHARKBYTES It certainly is. You're probably too young to remember the similar attacks in Recife in the 90's, though there have also been a number since then. Both situations seem to have been at least partially caused by human interference, in Brazil a new port and on Reunion Island (ironically) a new marine zone.
@@factchecker472 yeah I haven’t heard of Recife, but I’ll definitely check it out
Loved this! I wish you’d been my zoology lecturer 😂
They are seriously amazing sharks thanks for the info

Hi Matt - we did one about a year ago, enjoy!! ruclips.net/video/WCEp5X1ixO4/видео.html&ab_channel=SHARKBYTES
I enjoyed the creature feature. ❤
I also found the man eater game very funny. 😂 You had some issues with alligators as I recall. Lol.
Thank you for sharing interesting and entertaining information on sharks. ❤
I would love for you to talk about the Tresher Shark. Its along with the while shark the most beautiful fish in the sea!
I was once swimming in about 3 feet of crystal clear water off the panhandle of Florida, and suddenly a 6-8 foot bullshark swam up to me so fast that I accidentally bumped it in the nose with my hand before I could even react. Then it swam off just as quickly as it appeared, and I got out of the water immediately. Didn't get bitten, and I don't think the shark was even going for a test bite, just coming in for a closer look, then got spooked when I brushed it with my hand by accident. Nature is funny and scary in equal measure, lol
I've always heard that bull sharks are more dangerous than other sharks because they like to 'investigate' with their mouths. Not sure if this is true or just an old Aussie wives tale!
Loving the newer, longer creature feature episodes...
Would like to request ORCAS 🐋!!

My facts might be off a little bit, but I believe the bull shark is also known as the Lake Nicaragua shark. As far as I know, the sharks are always in the lake. Strangely enough, despite being closer to the Pacific Ocean than the Caribbean Sea, the lake does drain to the east.
