My Disk Utility doesn't give me the option to select encryption. (Using Big Sur) There's only "Mac OS Extended (Journaled") and "Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)" selections.
be sure you are going to the little "view" window in disk utility and I think you will find that the icon that appears on the desktop is not the "root" usb drive icon. make sure you are at "show all devices".

I sell my USB's with my 5 music albums on it (yes my own music) but I don't know how to put a lock on the USB or make it not copiable, so that peeps can't just go on selling my music with that USB, but can still play it on any USB device for their enjoyment....so how can I do it please? To each folder containing the album first before putting them on the usb? or is it done to the USB itself after music has been put on it??? Sorry for the stupid question Oh and the most important detail.....how to do it on my iMac desktop, which is why I chose your video :) Thank you in advance

I'm not aware of any way to read encrypted Mac hard drives on Windows. There are solutions that work on Mac and Windows but I don't have any experience with them.

From what I understand, mds_stores is the Spotlight software. You might try this to fix it: discussions.apple.com/thread/7253932 It might also work after restarting the computer.
If you have a good password, it would likely be extremely difficult to impossible to get into the drive. I don't think there is a standard way of accessing the drive in Windows even if they did have a password.

Thank you for the help, all the other online tutorials were so confusing lol. it was all down to selecting the device on top and not the one under it.

I use the mac big fur 11.4, and try to encrypt the sd card, but the disk utility does not have the option of GUID, how should I do? thanks very much!
It would be encrypted for all OS types right? Like mqc, windows, linux, Raspberry, etc etc etc.?
It can only be decrypted by macOS as far as I know. It is encrypted for all OSes.

Will I be able to take this flash drive between Macs and PC's? Or how do you set it up to do that? Thanks
Unfortunately this is Mac only. I don't currently have any videos on cross platform compatible file encryption but I may make one in the future.
What happens if I leave the sd card plug in? Does it ask for the password every time I turn on my Mac or only when I eject it?
Every time you insert it or after you restart, it will ask for a password.

As far as I know, there isn’t a way to decrypt it on Windows. You need a Mac for that. It would be safe from prying eyes on Windows.
Suppose any of my friends steal my encrypted pen drive and use on their laptops usually windows. Will they be able to access my pen drive?
