Saiki (lead singer) wrote the lyrics to this one. She'd been reading stories during the covid period about people dumping their partners and that pissed her off. There was also a national scandal specifically regarding a very popular Japanese singer named LiSA whose boyfriend dumped her. As it turns out, LiSA a Band-Maid fan and met them at one of their concerts backstage. It's speculative, but not a huge stretch to think that Saiki might have had that dude in mind. Also, regarding Akane: in addition to all the places in songs where she gets shorter solos, Akane did in fact have a extended solo during the Yokohama concert. I really recommend getting the Blu-Ray -- it's one of their best concerts ever.
It's quite a bit more personal than that. A famous pop singer friend of hers went through a very public scandal with her hubby that cheated and blamed it on lockdowns. This was Saiki's cathartic moment.

The interesting thing about "Hate?" it was played at about the 2 1/2 mark of their 3 1/2 hour concert. They energy they displayed at that mark show they are true rock and roll troopers. Such professionalism to give their audience their best efforts after such an exhausting high energy concert. Yes, they feed off their audience's enthusiasm but they didn't let up . What a group of five young very talented women!!!!!
Go back and listen to Akane again. She goes "Bat Shit" crazy with her feet from start to finish. Oh, an this is no. 27 of a 33 song concert ... energy plus.
Thanks for the reaction and comments. This is the ultimate F*Off song. These ladies are FIRE!!!!! They exude pure joy and energy. BTW, I like your selection of scotch and bourbons. I recall seeing a bottle of Aberlour in the background in a video celebrating Akane's birthday a few years back. And you might be able to fund a trip to Japan to see the Maids perform w/The Warning by selling that bottle of Pappy. It'd be worth it. Just sayin'. Cheers!
Hate? was song #27 of 33 (3.5 hrs). That is the incredible thing about them. Being able to keep that energy up for that long, they are World class athletes in my book (especially Akane and #27 was shortly after her freestyle solo into Blackhole (220 bpm)), Po! That's why Akane is just holding down the pocket here. Btw, Saiki (lead V) wrote the lyrics from a 4th person prospective (Cheater, Victim, Mistress, Saiki).Side note: it appears Saiki is a "The Simpsons" fan, and wanted to use Bart's "I Hate you" phrase in a song, and here we have it, Po! 🦍🍌 PS, if the characters are who many believe it is (Japanese celebrity couple + Cheater's Assistant), then, Unfortunately, the genitalman in question tried to "off" himself, but luckily survived. Both the former-husband and wife had to take some time off from their celebrity schedules to heal, Po! Sadly, this happens when we think with the wrong "head."
Unless someone uploaded a bootleg copy of it, Akane-san’s drum solo can only be found in the DVD/Blu-Ray. And it’s not for any particular song either. They might post it on Band-Maid Prime someday. Ahhh, I’m not sure what you were expecting but Akane-san rarely does any solo.
