Just like Starfield lol. Bethesda lost its way. It used to make what was basically first person CRPGs, but switched over to more first person ARPGs. A concept change like that cant last. Good studios know what works for them. Bethesda got greedy and changed the concept late in the game. Their games feel creatively devoid at this point. Morrowind impressed people because it felt so different from other RPGs. Giant mushrooms, unique architecture, it really felt like an alien world. The more Bethesda strays from that level of originality the more they will fall apart.

Starfield being an entirely new setting made people finally realize that the core structure is completely outdated.
Bethesda never actually improved the formula. In 20 years. All they did was improve graphics and mechanics. Which is something I am happy about, but if we are totally honest the quest quality of Skyrim was already outdated and didn't hold a candle to the actual narratively strong games of the time.

Rockstar makes a good games, and just revamps the same game with a new story, graphics, and overall adds to their working games, they don't try and re invent it. This re inventing the wheel is what's killing these industries. With fallout 76 we wanted fallout 4 with new graphics and playing with friends. Rockstar made rdr2 as literally an expansion of the world of rdr1 with way better graphics and a great story. All elder scrolls needs to do is take skyrim and add more to it, don't take anything away, don't reinvent, just add more new good things and it will succeed.

It's not BG3 that destroyed them because these are two completely different games and completely different genres, it's apples and oranges. What actually destroyed them was the Witcher 3 as well as the rise of Souls games like Dark Souls and the latest masterpiece that is Elden Ring. And the icing on the cake is the fact that they blame the fans instead of engaging in any form of self reflection.

I don't know why Bethesda's developers and publishers are refusing to take accountability, but if they don't make a change soon they'll lose everything. The old flag carriers are gone and the new blood has left those flags on the ground to rot, they would rather batter their heads against the fans and blame them for their inability to move past their agenda to make a good game than actually do so. They simply... do not have the drive or the talent to create something good. There is zero passion in most of the industry.

This is actually something that i have thought about a lot. More companies need to make their games easily modable, and then pay attention to which mods get the most praise and hype. Then bring those same people on as paid contractors with just free reign to just make stuff. Like say TES VI, what if they brought on the best TES V modders to make quests and gear and dungeons which would then be added into the game. I think that would give Bethesda mad props for "caring about their community", even if it was just a means of selling more copies to make them more money.

They think the board knows better than the people actually purchasing the product, and when theyre proven wrong they just try to flip it around on us like "no youre the reason the game is bad because you're enjoying it wrong." Corporations these days just dont know what to do or how to take negative feedback, so when they get it they just say "nuhuh" and throw it in the trash bin. That difference is reflected in the modding community: Skyrim modders are usually very generous in letting others build on their work, or even take over a mod when they quit the modding scene. I just want to frame that timeline, because the mid 2010s were about 6-8 years ago, and 6-8 years ago "culture" was still much more one-sided for certain... shall we say, pandering with low-effort tokenization and 'member berries, and the games coming out now, are FULL BORE loaded with that, because when it started development, that was still "trendy"
I'm just pointing out, the recent, massive shifts of these games eating shit before they even launch only really started this year. That means, any game that started development in or before 2020 is likely to far along in development to salvage from this level of below-mediocrity; post 2020 development might still be early enough to redesign, retool, or repurpose work for efforts to avoid this fate, but I don't expect to see truly great games again for a for a few more years.
But, developers are now seeing the rotten fruits of their minimal effort labor not paying off, and realizing, years of work... is destine to fail.

I don't think we've had a super novel AAA game IP or idea in years, they're usually built off the backs of their predecessors in some way.
This current era isn't a bad thing, per se. It's just that fatigue is going to set in at some point, and I felt this with Elden Ring most prominently, which I think is THE posterchild of this era of gaming. "More Soulslikes" is always appreciated, but when does it start to become fatiguing?
"More Bethesda" is fatiguing, "More Destiny" became fatiguing a little while ago, and "More CoD" is fairly self-explanatory. People will continue to engage with these things *despite* their fatigue, though, so no company really needs to change their output drastically.

The main quest and civil war story are underdeveloped and unintetesting. If Starfield was replaced by a modern Skyrim, it would have been recieved a middeling reception. The radioactive glowing red flag at the start of this is that marketing department. When your marketing department sets expectations it means your company is already a corpse being run by means-tested trend chasing suits instead of anyone working to make an interesting and coherent story/world.
If you ever watch some of the interviews with Emil Pagliarulo about modern Bethesda's development process there are a few takeaways that support this. First and foremost - there is no design document to call back to for narrative consistency. Emil then brags about "our developers are their writers" and the quests suffer for it as there's no internal thread connecting them back together as there are no writers/editors checking for consistency. There is then comparing the current process to a jazz musician improving... while failing to understand the "illiterate jazz prodigy" is a part of myth and stories while actual jazz musicians were overwhelmingly classically trained musicians. You know, people who knew how to read and write a script and can tell a story with music on the fly because that's literally what they spent their educations learning how to do.

I think the big problem is, skyrim released in 2011 so its like 15 years ago. The team which made skyrim is long gone. The skills are gone. Beth is now like a athlette which won gold medal 15 years ago and since than, just ate (money kept pouring from skyrim anyway)
Now they are fat and forgot how to run. Starfield was a proof of that.

They literally cannot fail this??? They just need to do Skyrim again, but with slightly better graphics, add a bunch of features, improve the RPG aspects, do NOT do essential NPCs..
The game is literally one of the easiest Ws one could ever accomplish, as a matter of fact, there have been so many suggestions in the course of these 13 years that they could literally cash in so easily by implementing at least a quarter of the stuff players wanted.
Players want spears and polearms? Good, give them polearms alongside a skill tree for that.
Players want more character customization options, as well as more freedom of choice? Good, just take hints from New Vegas, it’s a game one year older than Skyrim.
No essential NPCs? Boom, done, your wish is fulfilled.
    More spells? Done!
More immersive melee combat? Just add timing your attacks as well as a dodge button and finisher moves based on the combo of buttons you use.
There is LITERALLY so little work they have to do just to make TESVI a hit, the fans waited 14 YEARS for this game. Hell! I was 12 when I first players Skyrim, now I’m 20 and I still play Skyrim and love it’s content, and Skyrim ain’t even that good of an RPG! There’s seriously so, so much they can get by simply putting a little effort.
TESVI is going to be the ultimate test of Bethesda, they already lost so much from making Shartfield, they have nothing to lose with TESVI, only everything to gain. And if they flop this… Then I suppose it’s time for Bethesda to finally die.

Fans don't expect too much, they expect what they were used to with Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, and not much more. There's no need for fancy graphics, TES was carried by its style more than technical prowess anyway, or for an open-world the size of the Earth, especially if it's barren ground with a handful of copypasted dungeons.
As far as I'm concerned, all the fans are asking for is a game comparable to the old ones in terms of scale, with a carefully made open-world, tweaked gameplay and only slight improvements in graphics. But if Starfield is any indication, they're going for the low-effort route.

The legendary looting loop should go away and bring back unique weapons and armor tied to locations. I loved the way Obsidian did that system, getting the Q-35 matter modulator plasma rifle or the gobi scout rifle. They had the PERFECT opportunity with how they made the upgrade system to allow me to change ammo types for the weapons, make them explosive that way. And then just needed an ammo crafting system and bingo. You already have a great junk and crafting system to do that.

Agency! Stop trying to give us every choice, every faction, every ending in one playthrough.
Flesh out your faction missions and limit them. For example; if you join the fighters guild and want to become their leader, you should be barred from advancing beyond an acolyte of the mages guild, thieves guild, Dark brotherhood etc. this promotes replayability.
Stop making us The Chosen One. One of the reasons games like Elden Ring and Witcher have such riveting stories is because we are not the center of the world. We just live in it.
Consequences! Let the player decide how to go about tackling a problem. If it ends in the death of a story NPC then write around that with consequences making your next tasked that much more difficult or easier.
Do something about the brain dead AI. The enemy AI has not evolved from just running at you and swinging their weapon nonstop occasionally moving out of frames or just repeated slinging the same spell over and over until they run out of magicka and start rushing at you with the same repeated swing relentlessly while occasionally moving out of screen.

Bethesda has been down grading their games for years, reaping in rewards from their rich worlds becoming hollowed for a more and more casual audience. The volume of fans they gained out weighing those that they lose. Until it reached a tipping point, and now everyone can see the trend like a slow boiled frog seeing it's skin starting to peel in the water.

They also heavily relied on the building mechanic, so they relied on the player to fill the world with more life. I think that it was a mistake because it required many development resources and distracted from the main gameplay loop.
These „quests“ always had the same blueprint and basically felt radiant. A couple of handcrafted quests with stuff to explore or experience are far better.
