- Studio scale replica builders are a special breed of modelmakers, painstaking recreating the models using the exact materials, parts, and paint as the original filming miniatures. Steve Neisen and Mike Salzo are such builders, and they share with us their studio scale Slave I that's constructed using rare model kits that would've been on ILM's modelmaking shelves. The back of the ship alone is hundreds of parts!

Its amazing really that one of the big model companies does not do a large scale replica. Perhaps all the small parts scare them ..... but again there has been many large scale falcons .... weird. Same with the AT AT !!

Steve Neisen your work is always OUTSTANDING!...................I should know, I followed you as you built the prototype of the 'Klingon Bird of Prey'......I have 'ALL' of the production photos you released. I use them exclusively for the building of my BOP. Actual studio pics are too few and far in between for details needed, but you came along and gave us everything we as the model builders needed for our builds.
Totally awesome, I especially liked when at 4:35 I spotted that the rear panel included a model tank body!!

It’s amazing EFX has the nerve to go to conventions. I preordered their scout trooper helmet July of 2014! Have no idea when or If I’ll get it. They’ve been dicking their customers around for 3 years. EFX is the definition of incompetence. They’re a ****ing joke. If this is ever sold by them, buyer beware! You’ll probably put a non-refundable $300 deposit down and never see or hear from them again.
Daniel Right there with you, got burned with the Scout Trooper helmet too. Terrible customer service and never deliver. Steve is a super nice guy but hosed many with his props in the past, just check the RPF for countless stories. Too much trust lost and I can't believe they still maintain a license for Star Wars products.

When I was unemployed, I built model kits, I took photos of the progress, and built up a portfolio, Im now employed as a model maker, so its totally possible.

EFX is awful. Poor customer service and never deliver product after taking your money. Sad that Tested is putting them in the limelight.

Definitely is a must to have. Too bad this slave 1 is like a unicorn it simply doesn't exist. I'll be commissioning one of my local fabrication shops. They'll be able to reproduce the whole body and for the interior, I'll be using epoxy clay.
Does studio scale mean that it is the same size as the original prop used in the film?

So out of curiosity, i contacted Steve Neison at EFX. I wanted to know if this kit was available, and what the cost was. He said they had kits available for $2,000 plus a $200 shipping fee. He also said that they build and paint ones like the one on this video for $10,000. I'm really amazed at how much profit these guys make. I personally can't afford $2,000 for one, and i'm not crazy enoughto pay them $10,000 to have them make me one just like this. But just from reading all the negative comments, on how these guys rip people off? I rather wait to find the next best thing, for a more affordable price. If anyone knows of another kit that is "studio scale"? let me know! haha.

Interesting thought. Maybe Copyright only applies to a complete model? Casting a couple of parts may fall under 'Fair Use'? I'm resisting the urge to research this ponderance. Damned curiosity!
I suspect the entirety of the kit and its part is copyrightable. Not just the finished item. But, that said, these kits are based on real life tanks, fighter jets, etc, so perhaps they could argue that they're taking a copy of something that was already allowed to be copied.
they aren't mass producing them so that's already not worth going after but there are also laws that kick in around transformative use of something so it no longer resembles the original. I don't know if the US has those laws but here in the UK you can even mass produce star wars stuff as long as its for those reasons and parody. That's why you get so many bobble head toys that sell in droves and Disney can't do a thing about it.

Naaa- I’m Quite Happy with My Finemold Variations and my Old MPC Kits! You can Modify them to make them more accurate and they don’t take half the space! Besides if it’s True I don’t want to put down a Deposit and never get the Model!? Surprised they’re still in Business! Besides I saw their Devastator- Devastating to say the least with all the gaps and holes and short falls! Better off Building my own! There were too many imperfections in their Presentation!

Vader captured Han Solo and Calrission was the stooge. Fett did nothing except transport him to Jabba.
What was great about Boba Fett? His ship looks like a piece of crap that doesn't even seem to fly right, and Fett came to a quick and silly death.
Why? What's the fascination? A good initial character but he does nothing and is killed almost immediately in screen-time.
But hey, I was also the person that called out Firefly and still don't get that stupid Wild West in Chinese bullshit that people still love.

I think everyone’s fascination with boba comes from his mystique and badass looks in the original trilogy. The prequels just added on to his story.
Matthew Chandler : Well Star Wars, not "A New Hope" as later referred to, came out when I was 9 years old. When Empire came out, we waited for hours around the block.....we didn't have movie mega-plexes like today.
I thought Boba was awesome and mysterious, just like everyone else. But that "bad-ass" armor and his story meant nothing because Lucas created something he couldn't come close to finishing. He is meaningless Lucas blew it.
Boba really should have became a bounty hunter to avenge his father's death by killing Mace Windu. But of course that didn't happen because George Lucas is a schmuck.
This is what happens when a bunch of "yes-men" blindly follow a billionaire.
I can't wait to see how Disney and Hollywood fuck this up even more.
I was sort of with you on the Boba Fett rant as most of the Star Wars universe is silly and overrated. It's really quite poorly written and often poorly acted. But then you ragged on Firefly, one of the best written and acted Sci-Fi to ever hit the small and big screens. You lost all credibility at that point. ;-)

There were some strong characters in Firefly....I liked the backstory of Mal and Zoe and then Wash too. Jayne? Whatever, a good story needs an asshole too. The prostitute? None of the "gamer-girls" that suddenly emerged had a problem with that! The weird sister....yeah okay, great acting? Not even close.
Then, you guessed it, it comes to Kaylee. This "actress" has to be the worst ever! A stupid role, formed by mindless idiots that say "oh yeah, let's make her the mechanic". Sure she's cute.....But damn this girl CANNOT act!
Then we get to the stupid wild west but everyone speaks Chinese bullshit. Why? China took over planet Earth but everyone loves money?
Sorry, Firefly had some great things going for it. But it was convoluted by over-acting, weird Chinese curse words, a horrible movie, and a stupid dog. Okay, there wasn't a dog.
Add some great special effects and blammo! Yeah, good job! Maybe someone will realize that effects alone won't make a good video game or a good film.

When you read "studio scale model replica" that implies it is a replica of the "studio scale model" used for filming. Unless you are telling me that there was no Slave 1 model used for the filming of ESB, I'm not sure what you're saying ;)
Why everything in Star Wars have to be old and beaten? Nothing is flashy new, everything is carved, cracked, risked, eroded, kinda tiresome.
