- Eric Weinstein is a mathematician, cultural commentator and Managing Director of Thiel Capital. He has a theory in physics, called Geometric Unity, which attempts to reconcile quantum field theory and relativity. He's a walking anomaly and a complete polymath; genius doesn't do him justice. In this episode, we grab in n' out, talk about intergenerational theft, malaise among young people, artificial general intelligence, UFO's and the "theoretical" media company of the future.
*** AMERICAN ALCHEMY is an original series hosted by Jesse Michels that explores the frontier of science and tech. Each week, we bring you exclusive interviews with some of the leading thinkers of our time.

Jesse do us all a favour and get Eric to start up the portal again👍
that'd be great. unfortunately, I wasn't aware of Eric back then, and so I never got to watch the Portal like that.
@@1Deep43VA Eric purposefully tried to have his episodes not timebound by referencing current events. You should definitely still dive in.
@@karl_wiley oh really? What a phenomenal idea. I definitely will be checking them out now.

“Everywhere is over. It’s not happening anywhere. There’s no point in city-chasing.” - as an errant former corporate sad girl turned homestead and baby-having hopeful, this was music to my ears
Yes I agree! And I believe him to be right.
It is always a joy to hear about a woman who rejects the modern lie, that a career is the most fulfilling thing and decides to be a loving and caring mother.
I wish you all the best and may God bless you.
@@donpaco6536 thank you, Don. God bless :)
"Your parents love you, but not as much as I love you. And that kills me."
I feel that.
"Our current capitalism is an argument for communism" 15:20
Current communism is an argument for capitalism.
This makes me not want to go back to two people on a zoom call chatting for 2.5 hours. this kind of thing is way more immersive and gives better insight into the people having the conversation
Hell yea man
You might be wrong. Editing is creating a certain narrative. I do understand what you were saying but so many people get all “starry eyed” when they see fancy editing. Think for yourself and be objective. Or not. I. Ain’t. Shit. Edit* I did edit this comment so I am a hypocrite LOL
@@didhedieddud334 it’s not the fancy editing I find insight in. It’s how the different stages of the interview (even ordering food) gets Eric into different moods and reveals different facets of his character. And I do think that sitting on couches surrounded by books brings out more personality than talking on video chat.

17.56 Erics stomach growls. Sounds like hes getting bubble gut🤣
As someone who left Mormonism and moved to New York, then Paris, then spent a ton of time in Lisbon and Austin…Eric’s admonition to stop city chasing resonated with me. While all those places were amazing, I was left with a hollow feeling. I’ve moved home to my native Canada and have started to realize just as he states, it’s happening between people. That’s where it’s happening.
Thanks for the discussion. Hope there are some follow ups in the future!
So you are responsible for Eric starting a podcast? That automatically earns you a sub.
Too bad Eric never does it anymore
what a loser thing to say. you give someone a sub because he helped another white dude start a podcast
best episode jesse!
A millennial with post-graduate degrees working a full time job plus a part time job at 30 has to worry about whether they can support a family with multiple children is another thing wrong with modern western society.
If birth rates are too low, this is one of the reasons.
And the idea that "we are owned" explaining Fermi Paradox is terrific. I'm impressed.
To me, Eric playing music is a prime example of the problem he was talking about in relation to machine learning. He understands how, but not why. Press this key to get this note, play this series of notes to get this effect. The technical proficiency is there, but there's absolutely no soul. It can't be boiled down to just an algorithm, in the same way that consciousness can't be boiled down to just brain activity.
A lot of music suffers from the same problem. At this moment I've decided to call it The Four Chords that Made a Million Syndrome. Put these four chords together in a certain sequence, and bam, you've got a cheap hack into the human emotional system. It's fun to bob your head to, but it doesn't reach the depths of the soul. It's like the difference between cocaine and mushrooms.
I hate to criticize such a brilliant man, but I had such a visceral negative reaction to his piano playing that there was no hope of keeping my mouth shut. Forgive me.
This is the single-most underrated Eric Weinstein Podcast.
I’m at a loss for words. So much to think about. Absolutely amazing episode. Eric blows my mind every time I hear him speak.
That was special, the more I listen to EW interviews the more I like him. Thanks for including the keyboard clip, would love to hear more about the algorithms of musical scales cause and effects on our moods and emotions. Cheers Jesse - G Unity love!
Enjoyed the riff on "it is not about the place, it is about the people." I've lived all over, and it holds true that "no matter where you are, there you are." Gets one to think about the value in chasing cities or staying put and shoring up local relationships to create an amicable situation.
oh man, that takes work and Neighbourly love lol :D but i like your thinking
“At some level we’re going to find it’s not good enough to know whether things are true or something can do them; we’re going to want to know why things are true.” I love that statement from Eric
It is really fun to see and hear two very smart guys talking and so thoroughly enjoying each other. I'll watch this again!
I enjoyed the editing style. This podcast was both information dense and fast paced enough to maintain my attention for the entire duration. Well done. Subbed.
20:40 is a badass reveal. I had no idea that copyright was the reason why the GU paper claimed to be a "work of entertainment." I was turned off by that at the time, but this makes a lot of sense.
I’ve got to hand it to you Jesse, what you’re doing is going to be unbelievably successful. I’d love to see a video where you explain how you got started and what your plans are for the future. There are people out here in this world, include me, that have a burning passion to listen and talk about these ideas. Having an open mind to these important ideas is a quality that’s been lost since the advent of social media. Keep up the amazing work!
Fascinating conversation…finally a channel that doesn’t bore me! Love what you are doing man 😊
Perfect mixture of Humor and Deep content, with perfect editing... great work.
Phenomenally done interview. Your style of conversation brings out the best in this dialogue
I like this as reverse psychology to get EW to do another Portal episode!
Ayyy been waiting for this channel to start up! Congrats man :)
Great job Mr. Michels, you are very talented and I if this is the standard you plan to keep up I will spam my friends inboxes.
All I can think of after listening to Eric speak is that South Park episode where people in San Francisco began farting into a wine glass, bringing it to their nose to smell and inhale deeply.
Your producing wonderful material through a unique lens, don’t ever stop! And I hope your passion for doing so never fizzles out. It’s comforting to see and hear that I’m not the only one who’s sees the macro and micro that connects all aspects of life, even if our filters are a little different. 🙃
I was the first viewer of this post! Such conversations are nice to watch in parts, during several days, they make me think of new things. thank you!
I very much enjoyed the prolonged introduction you gave on Eric, reminded me of a better edited version of a Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee type introduction. I hope you keep that up with all of your guests, also "something a baby boomer did twice" murdered me. Look forward to listening, and the future of this channel, I feel as though you're filling a gap not yet covered by someone else.
Means a ton man thank you
Keep up your content, Jesse. You drop nothing but bangers - can’t wait to be along for the ride.
Enjoyed this. Love dialogue between generations. I’m an old genXer.. and I care deeply for future generations. So much change so fast is daunting. Love Eric’s take on city chasing... boy did I do that. Wisdom is earned thru living lots of years...and perhaps the most important thing one knows as one ages... is how very little one knows. Still... it’s a trip worth taking. Bittersweet. Best to you!
Super great channel, Jesse! Found it yesterday, really enjoying your work!
1962 boomer here. Loved the conversation and your approach to the interview. Eric's views stimulates critical thinking and your great questions triggers just that!
It’s fascinating to watch Eric speak and how his mind works. I could listen all day. Definitely subbed
Thank you really enjoyed this conversation. Hope u do more of this in the future.
I absolutely love the energy between you two! I hope to see more of you both 👏
Yoooo i just binge watched your whole page!! keep it up! you got my sub and word of mouth!
I appreciate the style of this video. Essentially podcast content but with video that's worth watching, but not necessary to watch. Felt like a vlog of a day you spent together merged with a podcast.
I'm excited for this one always a pleasure to listen to Eric I really enjoy his speech & multilayered thinking
Wow, I have not even started watching, but thanks for doing this.
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻
Humility and honesty are a rare commodity. Thank you for this fascinating exchange!
Best discussion with Eric that I’ve listened to, (and I think I’ve watched em all). Great topics, guests and insight on this channel. Keep it up. One of the better sources to inspire those that would rather rage against the apathy.
Dude, where have you been. People like you and Curt are on the cutting edge. Thank you. Please more
"Welcome to this longform interview", proceeds with the shortest Weinstein interview I've seen on RUclips. Just busting baIIs, great video. Maybe the best Weinstein segment I've seen so far.
Only issue I had with this video is that the volume is uneven throughout. I had to adjust it every time you cut to another scene.
I like when you guys kick around interesting topics.
Thanks. Eric in Kissimmee Fl.
Came here after seeing the clip Eric tweeted about aerospace having unknown tech. Subscribed to the channel, and the Twitter 👍👊🇺🇸🤘
Right on!
Great interview, you have a new subscriber.
Cheers 🍺
I'm glad Eric took the red pill on UFO's. Such a smart person with blinders on for that topic is not a good look, shows even a genius like him can stick their head in the sand over a topic right under their nose. Putting Eric on the case of UFO phenomena is a massive leap in brain power, like Gary Nolan, etc. We need no BS dynamic multi talented scientists who can think outside the box like Eric to get after the UFO topic. We need disclosure now!
How refreshing to hear 2 people with the ability to converse. Enjoyed this immensely. Thank you ❤️🇦🇺
One of the best of Eric’s interviews
Yes I concur. He didnt veer too deeply into the weeds of his GU cryptoglot as he invariably does when some tragically plaintive supplicant tries to drag him into the cattle-chute of the lay accessible science communicator. Eric gets understandably peevish when his audience refuses to get off the f*cking couch and at least meet him in the lobby of the Physics auditorium. If you cant be bothered to skim a glossary or watch a SpaceTime summary of the Dirac equation before you squirm up expecting cosmic profundity to be dropped into your lap by a luminary of his once in three generations testicular mass, then prepare to get smashed under a four dimensional proto spacetime manifold festooned with emergent naked spinnors b*tch! Jesse is not your average Lex. He is demonstrably capable of keeping pace with Eric and instead of lapsing into stunned bafflement at a GU diatribe, he keeps the volley going with incisive original observations and fresh nonobvious inquiries in real time. Ya just gotta love those Ashkenazim... if theres a dumb one out there I sure haven't met him!
Long time follower of Eric since his interview on Tim Ferriss. Thank you for the wonderful content.
I’ve spent my entire life around highly driven people. They all seem to have one glaring fault. They lack concern and empathy for others and their over driven traits make them narcissists. Unfortunately as Erik talks I see glimpses of the other assholes I’ve known the arrogance pride self adulation come poking out. Lack of self awareness. There is huge difference between true genuine leaders and people who want to lead. Erik is brilliant he’s not a leader. The country desperately needs leadership!
This is the first time in my life that I wanted to go to the Patreon and sign up for something just to support it. 💖
Alex Jones brought me here, watched a few UFO episodes, and I'm 16:46 into this when (the figure eight of money balance) and I immediately wanted to support what you're doing.
I was one of the first "RUclipsrs" on the platform. That struggle between clicks and true to self is real. MUCH more chill now. So many paths to monetization. The partner program didn't even exist for my viral video. 😝
Anyhow, you're doing awesome work. Also...
I'm a modern day Taoist wizard with an intimate understanding of the "living intelligent sentient" universe. The video with the 26 year old had me pumped! It's like the science realm and the spirit realm are going to collide in a meaningful way real soon. It's like I'm watching it happen!
I'll expand on that... there was a moment in the episode with Eric and the UFO guy (forgot the new acronym) where you guys were trying to explain how that dude was able to see through the machine or how when people went to the bottom of the ocean they could "hear" better.
The information is kind of all colliding into the moment. We're all "cogs" in this intelligent machine. What confuses everyone is the "free will" problem. It's assumed that everyone has it. Everyone doesn't have it. If someone actually get some level of "free will" they didn't do it. It was kind of gifted to them (the same way Elon Musk was gifted with Tesla through lines of culture, genetics, family, etc.). He's a conduit, not a person making decisions. That's a hard pill no one wants to swollow.
In order to truly get free we have to accept the fact that it's practically impossible to do it! Running around thinking you already have it (and everyone else does too) means you're definitely a cog in this intelligent machine. Just like a cell in the body...
Think about it. Modern scientists needed these CRAZY signs to get triggered into seeing that there's more going on. There are definitely shamans who have stories that make sense with the (modern) physics shattering things going on with those UFOs.
When you get tapped in, you see that high level communication between "us" and higher orders of "us" is happening all the time (it's just one big "us"... and not... lol ).
Just gotta make connections to the indigenous cultures. They have "secrets"...
Anyhow... Back to the video! Awesome stuff!
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk... lol
I'd love to see Jesse make it onto Rogan
Excellent. Thank you 🤘🏻
This was so well done even aside the converation , you can see how much work went into it and it shows. The pacing , editing intro. Great work
I really like this interview with Eric much more than the others I've heard. Great pod first one I've watched on this channel.
Who’s library is that? Looks great 👍
UFOs are real .. obviously funding technology to utility is behind those that actually use the Einstein INCH equation .. no need to steal, we have the math, even to lower sea level here, 400 feet .. but if you can ..ask where Planet 9 IS!!
It should be noted that this provides video proof that Eric Weinstein took the time to learn the simple version of "Heart and Soul" that is known to be one of the easiest pieces to play on the piano but also took the time to learn how to "jazz up" the last couple bars as if he was a professional pianist who couldn't help but "improvise" a more complex version of such a simple piece of music. The problem is, he is not improvising that part, in fact he's struggling to remember it (even struggling to remember the very basic version of "Heart and Soul"). Why would he take the time to learn something like that? Well, if he pulled it off, he could give the impression to people who don't play the piano, that he is an "amazing" pianist who has got so much "soul" that he can't stop himself from getting lost in the music, etc. etc. even when "trying to be humble about it" and playing the standard entry level piece. Of course, it doesn't really work, since he is playing so poorly. But the idea of using "Heart and Soul" is to contrast the simplicity of the piece with the apparent "required ability" to "improvise" the more complex ending. This is supposed to create a contrast in our expectations by, at first, thinking he can only play the basic songs that any kid can play and then being "stunned" when he starts to jam on it. I mean, dude spent a LOT of time putting this together to create a false impression of his ability and who he is. It should also be noted that he didn't spend enough time because he still failed to pull it off, creating evidence of what some might consider to be a bit of charlatanism.
“Physics isn’t the most important thing. Love is.”
Love that statement “ teach a man to fish and they will starve because they can’t comprehend that they need to go fish” in todays world that seems prophetic.
Damn. Watching this after 3 hr mind numbing conference call where a conventionally successful elder person talks about family and being home is soothing. No option is bad if we get the basics right. ..for most of us average folks.
Just came across this channel and it has become one of my favorites already, very thought provoking.
great interview. I didn't grow up in L.A., but my wife did. I came to appreciate how L.A. can offer every slice of Americana -- if you can figure out where it is and how to get there.
the intro music makes me feel like i'm headed into the wild west frontier of ideas
Thanks Nasjaq ;)!
This is already one of my favorite channels, everything I've listened to has been FASCINATING, all of the stuff I'm into :)
Great job with these podcasts. Truly impressive guests and excellent editing as well as interviewing. Keep up the great work. You’re going to be huge.
What mic is that in the opener? Also, kept expecting Van Naistat to roll up while you were eating.
Mind totally blown. Such a rich, vibrant, varied, thought-provoking interview. Thank you so much for this!
Anyone claiming there is anywhere to go is lying
We live in a closed system
There is nowhere to go
Another incredible interview.
great conversational approach. So natural. Love it. Great topics.
Just found your content, loving the concept. Great work helping Eric come around on the UAP/UFO issue, his brains/courage our pivotal to help disclose the "Full Truth" behind the scenes.
Thanks, Jesse, for sharing a riveting conversation
We get off this earth in a body bag or by looking within. By looking within, we realise that this is all an incredible dream and that there is no getting off because we are actually on No Thing and there is nowhere to go.
Speak to Bernardo Kastrup, Donald Hoffman, or Rupert Spira
It amazes me to see that we collectively do not get it.
We are here to experience, create, and grow. That is it.
Wow I'm glad the big intellectuals are starting to see this alien visitation as real.
"The big intellectuals" -> Eric Weinstein 😂🤣😂
I just want to escape from Tarkov
Jesse. Keep up the good work!!!! Great interview.
Great great GREAT interview!!! Keep em coming.
I am along for the ride Jesse!
Hitchens and Hawkins lovechild is a beautiful caption for Eric , very on point
Wow Jesse you did an incredible job here. On the UAP question, we need the world's very best to work on this problem. If we take into account the variety and complexity of the phenomena, we won't have a clue unless we get the very best to invest thier considerable interlect and experience on this problem. That's what has been so frustrating, getting science involved. We won't figure this out until the scientific community involves itself.
Learned a lot about Eric on this one, hope I can have a conversation with him someday before I kick the bucket. Awesome duo.
When they touched on the topic of GU I dont think I heard what GU was…so couldnt follow that part if convo very well.
Looked up the term (geometric unity) but the moment is gone.
Otherwise I enjoyed the myriad of ideas.
You guys are stoking an intellectual fire in me while being wildly entertaining or discussing wildly entertaining subjects and I can’t thank you two enough. To butcher a portion/lesson from Thoth’s, The Book of the Dead: {you may not believe these words or even understand their meaning, but the mere act of reading/hearing the words of this book will raise your vibrations i.e. your consciousness.}. This is why some Truth’s resonate with you on what seems like a cellular level. That is what I feel when listening to your conversations. Thank you both!
UFOTwitter brought me here (via Dr. Weinstein's feed). This is great. Thank you for this...and the Portal.
And yes, music is an algorithm. It's math! Also 25:18 gives me concern about my youtube channel.
Great interview!!
Keep going, this is clever, fresh and inspiring.
What a great interview.
I would love to see a conversation with Slavoj Zizek!!
Subbed, this deserves to succeed, good luck brother.
Wow, I'm sure Pachelbel, the composer, would have really appreciated having his composition reduced to nothing but its foundational motif and harmony and then mistaken for being somehow part of an unrelated system that someone used to analyze it or superimposed on top of it. Every composition can be analyzed mathematically, just like every book and every sunset and every coastline and every organism and so forth. Even if Pachelbel intentionally used math as a means to find the inspiration for the composition (which is highly unlikely), reducing his art to a method he used to get it started is like reducing Van Gogh's Starry Night to "a picture of stars in the sky."
'Nowhere is happening'...... this was a great watch - thanks to both of you. Virtually everything Eric says opens a thought mine...
Great! Subscribed!
love the show, keep on with what you're doing
This is an awesome interview
Wow ! Amazing video. I've recently subcribed into this Chanel and I was hooked. You sir have opened a can of worms. In a good way. You bring this In a English for us lower forms to understand. Thank you
Loved this, thank you
That was amazing. Thank you!
Great interview. Keep up the hard work! We need some sanity in Cali, haha.
