Phil Collins was cherry on top of the cake, unforgettable performance !
Collins is great drummer, but as FIB 45 said, Jamie Oldaker is on first drums. Here is a direct quote from EC about Jamie Oldaker "“He has the best snare sound I’ve ever heard, he has the best restrained fills I’ve ever heard, and his bass drum is as solid as rock. He is unique, and the pocket is always perfect. The kind of man he is matches his drums,” Clapton wrote." RIP Jamie Oldaker...one of the greats.
@@roszela1 no buts with Phil, his prog drumming is legendary on top of incredibly difficult, Even Neil Peart has said Collins was an inspiration and his drumming on SEBTP is text book unparalleled stuff, this song is easy stuff for Phil
That second solo is the cleanest and here's why: The way he mixed the A major & minor pentatonic scales is almost inseparable. You can't tell the difference between the two like that! Just insane!
in rock most power chords don't have a major/minor identity--hence the 1-5-1 power chords. blues scales are built similarly to pentatonic so i don't think he's even thinking about pentatonic scales when playing, he's just going for the smoothest blues lick that comes to mind
@@joeylau7578 Obviously he did not rely on power chords in this tune. The substance here is the riff-alike chord progression G-C-Dm-C (after the modulation from 3:10 A-D-Em-D). I would say the minor chord is the color that makes the difference.

Born in 86, but love to listen to 80's music, I have loads of songs that I have picked up on over the years.... Occasionally you find a gem! This song is one of those gems.... I discovered it when I was watching an episode of Miami Vice Season 5 on DVD.... 📀 😊
I always thought some of his early 80s songs sound a bit lackluster in their studio versions, but they really come alive when he plays them in concert. Eric is always at his best live!
I second this. I finally got to see Clapton live there a few months back and, while he wasn't perfect at 79 years of age, it was truly an honour to finally see him.
Didn't know that Phil Collins played drums backing Clapton at Live Aid! He was the man at Live Aid. Besides backing Clapton, he also played drums for a reunited Led Zeppelin, and performed two short solo stints in both Britain and the U.S., all in one day!
And the MTV VJ Mark somebody said, "There is only one Eric Clapton." I saw this on TV at the time and was absolutely knocked out. This may be my fav EC live performance. Applause to the beautiful and talented Marcy Levy on the left.
Absolutely the best version of this song! Phil Collins spanked the beat so hard like a torch song deserves and Marcella Detroit turned the vocals up to 11 - the whole band charges this song with the energy that only a live performance can deliver.
Not an avid Clapton fan by any chalk of the imagination but this is quite an iconic piece in music history history for me , remember it as though it was yesterday If queen stole London , Clapton deff ruled America
There were some great performances at Philly, and if they'd chosen a better opening song Simple Minds would have been a contender for day's best. Ultimately though Clapton was the USA show stealer. More remarkable as his set consisted of a song he'd never performed as a solo artist, a flop single and song on release not actually credited to him.
A young Marcella Detroit on backing vocals (nearest to Eric). She was called Marcy Levy then. She later came to fame as one half of Shakespeare's Sister before releasing the excellent solo album Jewel, containing a killer version of I Wanna Take You Higher. Phil Collins took the idea of human endurance to new heights by playing in both concerts via Concorde. Clapton is standing back from the mic as he later said it was live and shocked him at the beginning of White Room.
