Wow...I'm a huge kick and snare beast...been trying to get my snares to cut through like Dr Dre does and once i saw this...leveling your snare and kick to similar levels and then processing them, and always leveling as things get louder...mann...does it sound soooo much better ...thank you so much for this info
Ive been analyzing dr dre's 2001 album in protools and all of his mixes kicks and snares are balanced like this on every song! It really works!

Joe this is so simple but so effective. I think a lot of people who have been doing stuff for a long time are embarrassed to ask these questions. This will save me hours of scrutinizing my kick snare ratio.

I wish in my last mix I had approached drums this way. I created more work for myself by jumping to effects too soon.
I always jump to effects too soon. I have a hard time waiting until all of the tracks are recorded to start messing with EQ, reverb........ even compression.
It's super easy to do.
@@HomeStudioCorner hi Joe, please ask the good fellas at presonus to add the on and off functionality on the splitter so that I can AB the difference between the dry signal and the processed one when doing parallel compression. When I turn off the inserts on channel, the splitter remains on. It's frustrating

This was a great video it was almost similar to top down mixing for example starting with the overheads and working your way down thank you very much! My suggestion would be to do a how to record my band live all in the same room there’s still many of us that just have garage bands and a DAW who just want to record what our practice session sounded like I think that would be good

Personally I usually start with kick and bassguitar together. I use a VU meter on the mix us, I crank up the kick until it hits half way of the meter, then I start to move up the bass until the VU meter hits 0.
I'm used to start setting the guitars from that point onward, so they sit right with both, then I move up all the instruments that I've gotta hear above the guitars (I like to use orchestral elements, synths and organs together with the heavy distorted guitars and the drums) then I move to the drums. I know most people start with the drums, but I like to do the drums last, because they have gotta be audible above a lot lot of instruments. But yeah I kinda struggle with setting the snare at the right level because I either make it too loud or not loud enough often. So matching the snare and kick in level could work for me. But I still think I should keep using that VU trick since that is just way too useful to me

This lesson is very enlightening and affirming to some of what I already do, and I'm very appreciative of this content! I'm curious to know:
1. Are these principles applicable to only rock-styled mixing? I ask because I create hiphop and dance music, and there are so many authors of tutorial content in those genres who espouse setting levels based upon decibel readings.
2. Are your track meters in Studio One set to render a pre-fader reading or not? I ask because as you attenuated/accentuated your faders, the LED readings on each track remained the same regardless, though there were noticeable changes indeed to the volume levels despite their visual readings.

in this video, you told me how to set the balance of the kick and snare drums, And as I understand it, they were not compressed before. does it make sense to level them before applying compression, because it significantly changes the feeling of volume and sound ? And another question ... Do I need to compress the overhead microphones separately? ... is this sequence of actions correct ? ... 1 - equalization and compression of each drum . 2- The balance between them . 3 - re - compression of all drums at the same time ( in a subgroup , for example ) . I will be glad if someone answers me who knows this .. not only the author of the video . Thanks for the video.

That sounds good. i take a different approach. I eq, compress, effect my kick and snare seprately before I set levels then bring them to around minus 6 dbs in level then by the time I have everything in I'm usually around -3 on the master ouput which is what I want. Other wise if you add compression or eq to say the kick later then you have to adjust the level again.

one caveat is to decide first what volume to mix/balance at, because it changes perception of relative volumes a lot :)

Hi Joe. I'm a new VIPer with you. I'm hungry to figure out drums and I do NOT have access to a live drummer. I used the Tom Brechtlein sample set to put in kick, snare, closed hat, cymbals and toms, but I'm just not feeling it yet. I'll try going on the forum to see what folks have to say. My request for a future video: show us how to build a complete drum track from scratch, using a virtual sound set.

Create it yourself. Select drums. Right-click: create bus for selected channels.

It is for all the drums. You can send all the drums to that one bus.

Is better to set the levels on a StudioLive 12 ARC mixer with no EQ, record in Capture or SD, then tweak the songs in Studio One Artist? Rock band rehearsal.....

Do you have any advice when it comes to having the snare and kick , hitting at the same time ? When the kick hits with the snare, it’s makes the snare quiet and not how I want it to sound.
When checking this video out, I wondered what you advise to do first; volume balance before or after panning? As panning affects the volume perception of each track?

On a fresh mix i redline the kick as hard as i can then set everything around.
A good idea is think about how would it sound on a 200capacity club.
Does anyone use Logic's stock compressor plug-in for drum bus mixing? If so, which main compressor type would you recommend?

Hey Joe! Love your videos. Quick question, I'm trying to make videos using Studio One 5 and every screen recording software I use records the audio in mono. What software are you using to capture your screen and the DAW's audio in stereo? Cost isn't an issue, just want my audio in stereo! Thank you :)
I wonder if leaving the faders like that won’t make you run out of room when you start processing all the instruments. I find it useful but my meters wouldn’t go beyond -14/16 db at that stage. I’m a complete amateur. Is there a point in what I’m saying here? Thanks a lot!

@@AndreDosjky, Hi Derek. No, mate. No answer. I'm an amateur but I was taught this by a sound engineer.
As I said, there may be something that it's missing here and that justifies those faders. But the right way to go is the one that I learnt long ago. Maybe aesthetic aspects in the video? That's the only explanation I can come up with.
I love this channel though. I find him and his content interesting and fun. And I'm sure he's super busy.

And yeah I agree, ge uses the same daw I do which helps, and he gets straight to the content.
How about Hip-Hop Joe? Most of the time kick is much more powerful than snare. Then you can use side-chain filter inside compressor to fix it

How do you separate the drum, snare, and kick from each other when using the Presence instrument plug in for drums? If I turn up volume on one thing every thing I've recorded on the drum kit turns up.

Would you use the same sort of approach when using programmed drums I.e. something like EZ drummer or GGD?
I don't quite get it: If you set your levels and move on to the EQ-comp-verb stuff, the levels are going to change dramatically anyways...
The more i mix the more i realise its all about the balance. But i have a problem. I make a lot of backing tracks for vocals. While making, i do not have any vocals to mix with. So, at times its a bit difficult to leave space for the vocals. Plus it often happens that the drums is too loud or too quiet. Would really appreciate if you do a video on balancing such tracks
Try using scratch vocals to get your mix balanced and after you're happy with the balance, mute the scratch vocals out of the mix.

I think it's a bit of a myth that you have to "make room" for vocals. Get a GREAT instrumental mix, and you should be able to sit vocals on top.

Layer both clips ( the screen share ) and your video over each other, crop your video and move it around using the x,y axis in your video editor

Was hoping for VU Peak RMS type a guidance, not clinical just a ball parks and set ups . But ear matching the snare and kick its easy to do and understand, so its already done. Cheers anyways.

Good question. No I wouldn't add compression until I finished the entire static mix.
I have a doubt in leveling I know that you have 4 drum tracks here and your master bus is hitting 0db after leveling but I want to know what if I have different instruments (Piano,Guitars,Synths,vocals...etc) in the mix how do you balance overall instruments what would be your idle headroom because I have a song that is clipping in master buss so I turned down and balanced levels of individual tracks and left 6db to 4db headroom in the master buss. When I am mixing adding effects things started to clipping again. Then I started to turn down the volume of few tracks that is causing to clip. Then after a while I realize some tracks volume are very low and i couldn't hear them in the mix and I increased volume of tracks that is lower . I feel like this constant workflow of lowering volume and bringing back up the volume is a mess and I feel like I am doing it wrong. I just want to know how do you deal when the song is clipping in the master buss and how do you balance between leaving the headroom in the master buss and balancing levels of individual tracks? Sorry if this question sounds newbie.

depends on what meter you're using, and the calibration. If it's dBu then it should be fine..
Please instruct to Record & Mixing Bass Guitar but use Acoustic Guitar, because I only have one Acoustic Guitar!!
I'm great at eqing, reverb, delay etc....But gainstaging irks me. Getting the perfect ratios is hard. A/B referencing is the best way to go.
how do we gain stage or set levels so that at the end of the mix we have enough headroom for mastering? I always have a problem where the kick takes up a lot of space and reaches 0 dbfs peaks even when low in volume...
Just pull all your faders, or your mix, down a few db.
None of the snare hits on the kick drum hits ,,what if they do ?
Compressor doesn't understand feel.. It only knows logic..
also work for virtual drums?
I find that every preset groove and drum vst has the kick mixed 10x as loud as the snare
Yeah sample libraries love to crank the kick.
I always set snare like "a new level live korea2001" must be a nuclear explosion goin off onto the distance
Great video As always Joe. I’m fairly new to recording and studio one and your vids have helped me exponentially. So thank you for that. Just a query on the gain staging in a static mix. A lot of vids say get the level metre averaging at around -18db, some do it with no volume at all, just going of the level metre. Your method seems to focus on getting everything sounding balanced sitting in the mix(which seems to make more sense to me) can you please add a little clarification to this?
Also I thought you used the trim knob for the levels not the faders??
I don't care about -18dB. Seems arbitrary. I know that some plugins like to see a certain level, but I don't use those plugins.
I use both.
