For players who want to start getting into modifying pedals; The DS-1 is probably the best pedal to start with. There are countless different mods. I've been building amps and pedals for 15+ years now. I started modding Tube Screamers, Dyna Comps, muffs, I didn't even own a DS1 until a decade ago. I was looking at a schematic and it immediately jumped out to me how many things I could do. Various overdrive sounds, unique fuzz, colored distortions, etc. The other Boss pedal that are great for modding are Bluesdrivers. Even though it only had a single tone control, they actually have a 3- band tone stack in the circuit, it's just that it's fixed with a resistor instead of a pot. You can swap out the tone control for a stacked pot so you can adjust the EQ, or just revoice it by using different resistor values. It's similar to the Fender Deluxe Reverb amps. They only have Treble and Bass controls, but there is a middle stack they fix with a 6.7k resistor. If you use a higher value resistor, it will increase the midrange, a lower one will scoop it. I always replace the 6.7K on the normal channel on the reissue for an 8K because it's actually what the vintage ones had, I don't know why they use the lower one, it's too scooped. On the other channel I add a trim pot to act as a Middle control, but before that I would just swap it for a 15K and it would bring it to a more of a Tweed tone. Some I would just replace the whole EQ for the Plexi tone stack.
I am a fan of the DS-1 and actually have the black BOSS 40th Anniversary edition pedal. I love the sustain it has but the with the distortion knob, you can go from cool bluesy tones to rock distortion, to metal distortion, to a mild fuzz tone, all in one pedal. Great demo Pete!!!
I had a Distortion in the early '80s. Switched to an Arion SDI-1 in '85 and never looked back. It's like the Boss Distortion on steroids. Thick distortion and tone. Can be adjusted to any need. I still have one today. Im on my 2nd 1. The first one I gave to the other guitarist in my band.

A DS-1 into a clean(ish) Marshall, along with a Strat, is what Gary Moore used during his Corridors of Power/Run For Cover era, which in turn John Norum emulated on the first three Europe albums (including The Final Countdown ofc). Monster sounding setup in my opinion. Norum starting using his old DS-1s again recently, and sounds as massive as ever.
I’ve tried a DS-1 into several different amps, with 2-3 different guitars, with both medium and loud volumes, and I could not get any sort of usable sounds with it! Not even a good garage/ grunge tone.. it just sounded like 100% dog shit. It’s definitely not my thing. Now the SD-1 however, that’s a lot more workable IMO
@@hiway52 was that a current production MIT DS-1, an 80s/early 90s one, or a Waza Craft ? The Waza in strandard mode being AFAIK a good reconstruction of the old ones.
Your opening demo tunes are always so killer and tasty!!! I find myself banging my head and tapping my feet every time. You are a true musical genius. Great demo of the pedal too. I bought a DS-1 brand new in 1982. I loved that thing and all my friends were jealous of the tone!
“I’m not 100% sure but I’m 99.96% sure it’s this super specific chain of equipment that was the set up for Cobain’s sound.” I love you Pete Thorn! Great demo as always.
Marries very well with the Destroyer. Those were my favorite sounds from this pedal. I noticed that right away, listening to the song up front. When Pete takes the solo, that thing really takes off for me. and the experimenting at the end (Destroyer) yielded some great sounds. I love the attack! Really really cool!
#Analogman has a series of cools mods for the BOSS DS1 Distortion. A Super, Pro, and Midrange Mod upgrades to Hi-Fi components, a new OpAmp Chip from JRC (think TS808), and a New MidRange Knob. The Stock DS-1 has a buzzy tone, with shrill highs. The JRC OpAmp makes the overdriven and distorted dirty tone, sound warmer and smoother. In 2017-18, there was a 40th Anniversary Limited Edition DS-1 Distortion released in Black/Gold that can includes these #Analogman Mods. The BOSS DS-1 Distortion (Orange) shouldn't be confused with the SD-1 Super OverDrive (Yellow). The DS-1 has scooped mids, unlike the Ibanez TS-9 TubeScreamer that has a midrange hump. So the Midrange mod allows guitar players to dial in more mids. The DS-1 has much more gain on tap than a #TubeScreamer for a more modern hard rock/metal sound. It can push a vintage #Fender Amp with weak mids into more of British Amp sound, like a Marshall.
Excellent job. I would note that the Vox Saturator, Joe Satriani's signature pedal was based on the DS-1, I believe. I bought a stock DS-1 around '06 and didn't really use it much then got the Saturator in '09 and was pretty much satisfied with it, until I started using fuzz for those particular applications. After this video I'm gonna break the DS-1 out and see what happens! Thanks again.
I love a DS-1. Friend of mine, fine player too, liked my sound at the time so he bought one and HATED it! I saw why; he was timid with the distortion setting. I dime it then back off. It pushes and starts to compress the input then you run your volume to clean up. After he used my settings he loved it. Getting the Waza version.
A little known fact: Boss designed their classic pedals using the Roland JC120 as their shop test amp. I don't know how that helps anybody except as a starting point to choose the right amp for them to sound their best. I found the perfect match with the clean channel of a Peavey Classic 50 half-stack and Marshall 2203's as well. I haven't gotten very good results through most Fender amps, too glassy and scooped. Like all pedals, it all depends on how it gels with the amp.
Absolutely awesome!!!! Best reviews out there! I just got one of these pedals and wondered what to do with them...and TBH kinda seem to sound better without it :) After hearing Pete - I need to rethink it.
_One pedal to dominate them all! ☠️☠️☠️☠️ I’ve used this to make some layers and also on my bass guitar. It holds a vast arrays of tones for sure. ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ It’ll also get ugly. Great demo Pete!_
I've always had Marshalls, and the SD-1 does more of the classic overdrive crunch, compared to the DS-1, which is a distortion buzz fest. Some love that, into a clean amp. Different strokes I guess.
The DS1 was my sound in the 80's. I always cranked the Mids and now I think with the custom mode,it will be much more usable! I'll have to try one, but I just bought the SLO pedal, which is awesome, so It may have to wait.
I got the Waza version, but the standard DS-1 sounds great into the clean channel of my little Orange 35rt. I like way it adds a bit of compression and scoops the mids. I only put the distortion at about 9 o'clock at highest, tone about 11 o'clock, volume halfway or more, with the amp and guitar cranked, and it's lovely, the perfect boost into a nice, highly responsive overdrive sound. That volume boost in custom mode is a bit too much, I always have to adjust my volume pedal when I turn it on. It just gets too muddy, at least with this amp. The DS-1 into a Big Muff is also quite nice.
I saw Satriani in 2006 (super colossal tour), and I saw him going from super clean to his classic lead tone by pressing the little orange box in front of him.
Pete that approach using the DS1 in your opener was fantastic. I like the more subtle gain distortion like that when it's definitely distortion but at the same time not mud.
The ds1w through the Ibanez explorer sounds incredibly. Something like Eric Johnson’s drive but different. It adds personality to the sound. Keep using it and please record songs with it. Perfect
Pete, I've been watching your videos for a very long time. I don't think I've ever commented on anything. I just want you to know that I always learn something from every video. Thank you.
I use the GE7 into the BD2 into the DS1 and get every gain, fuzz, distortion, or boost tone I could ever want and those damned pedals are indestructible! Never tried the WAZA DS1...still use the original one I've had since they first came out
I had the original ones that were "Made in Japan" 40 or so years ago. It sounded better then newer ones "Non-Japanese" Something in the solder or hands? Must say the Waza sounds awesome, nice upgrade. Love channel and another great post. Thanks for your time and efforts
If paired with the right amp, it sounds godlike. I once used an DS1 with a peavey valvestate combo, and it sounded incredible. set up more like a boost pedal with high level, low gain, and tone set to just before it turns fuzzy, very creamy saturated sound, and very dynamic
Steve Rothery from Marillion used one into a JC-120 as his main lead tone for decades. Level to taste, Drive maxxed and tone at minimum. I owned and played one for ten years in the 80s-early 90s and never got it to sound as good as Rothery's... :)
Of all of the things that I could have taken away from this video the one that stood out is the intonation of that Ibanez. Maybe I'm just having a weird night or something, but it sounds like the setup is dialed....it sounds amazing.
Had one of these pedals when I was learning, not sure I was a lad who was appreciative of the subtleties of the pedal however, as everything was just jacked to ten into my old Peavey practice amp…. Great demo.
Am I wrong, Pete? Or are you using this more like an overdrive? Sounds like you’re doing that Teen Spirit low gain thing, only certain parts sound like distortion, when you sustain the chords 6:39
In the mid-late 70s there wasn't a lot of choices. The MXR Distortion+ was it until the DS-1 came out in '78. I used to tame the tone of it by running it into the old MXR 10 Band EQ.
I think Satriani's Vox Satchurator was basically a modified DS-1. From what I understand, either England or the countries of the EU passed some sort of environmental law that affected his ability to take the vintage Boss pedals he used into England and/or Europe, combined with the older units getting increasingly harder to find and more costly to buy. So Vox designed his signature pedals with them to capture those vintage boss tones while still conforming to modern environmental laws of various countries. If I understand it right, you can still legally buy or sell the vintage pedals that already exist within those countries, but many of them either ban bringing them in from elsewhere all together or require you to go through tons of red tape.
I always never really got on with the ds 1 either but the Waza craft are certainly a cut above the average boss pedals that have seemed to become more and more sterile since the early 80's when everyone absolutely had to have them. Now they're a force to be reckoned with.Im hoping for a PH 2W phaser and Waza flanger soon. I just got the DS 1w last week and already own the DM 2w,CE 2w,and DC 2w all Waza and all excellent, especially the modulation ones. I've always thought modulation sounds tons better in analogue which is probably why synths such as the OBx 8 and Prophet 5 are so desirable. Great playing by the way!
These Waza Craft updates I think are pretty great. Check out the Waza analog delay. Maybe the only untouchable BOSS pedal is the compression sustainer. I can't imagine how they could improve the CS-3. ;)
You're doing a top job, giving people a good Idea of what to kinda expect from these pedals bud. Thanks for your help and time. 👍👍👍🥃Respect to you mate.
I collect them. I probably have over 20. My oldest in a September 1978 with the silver screw, clear skeleton switch, the painted inside and tan circuit board.
Way back when every company struggled to make a decent distortion pedal. Back then the amp Distortion was always better. But eventually they got it. The best Distortion that I got back then was with a Randall rg80.
Sounds like You're doing some 38special there "Hold On Loosely" Also i have read that Joe said, to him that the DS1 was always lacking like it would only go to 8 of 10 scale on the gain, so with his Vox pedal ICE9 Overdrive (had one) went to 13 or 16 gain (above 10….i forget) Plus 14db boost button
Well, it’s taken me awhile, but I’ve finally figured it out: It’s not the pedals. It’s just Pete. Feels good to realize this pedal isn’t that long-sought, magical, missing ingredient in my signal chain. My wallet is safe. My time is much better spent just playing. I am at peace. *CHECKING REVERB PRICES ON DS-1*
this pedal delivers and is a great alternate on my board. My primary is the Mojo with a AC to add a nice push. the DS 1w is a great break away and is totally the best I have owned. It it kinda tight with a nice openness to it if that makes sense
Great demo Pete! I have a couple vintage Japan black label DS-1’s and still love them to this day! Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Neal Schon pave the way on these DS-1’s and used them the same way to drive a crunchy Marshall. 👍🏼🎸😊
Nice review once again Pete. I have an old ds-1 (black label) in perfect condition that just sits on my chair in my music room. Just prefer my Marshall crunch and overdrive; as the DS-1 always seems 'buzzy' to me. jmho. Maybe do a Keeley conversion, or; Maybe it would sound good with another amp?
That Ibanez explorer is so you. Want one. Guessing the Waza is less noisy than the standard Boss pedals. Good enough for Lynch, good enough for me Petey baby!
I’ve always liked the DS-1 for legato runs. Think Alex Lifeson’s solo on “YYZ”. He didn’t use a DS-1, obviously, but it gives me that vibe. It’s not a particularly pleasing tone in and of itself, but it works for that. And speaking of legato, it obviously worked well for one of the masters of legato (Satch).
@@PeteThorn It seems to like a softer attack (legato, fingerpicking, etc.), at least in my experience. Pick hard and it collapses…which can either be a problem or really cool sound, depending on what the song needs. And if you run it on low voltage, it sounds even nastier and fuzzier.
Funny you should mention I have been using it playing Rush though he didn’t go heavy on the overdrive he did use Distrotion+ pedal in the early days and you can get a bit of fuzziness out of this you don’t get with a pure od that works well
@@eoinjennings519 I think he used the Distortion+ mostly on leads, in the period between Hemispheres and Signals. His Hiwatts were modded for more gain, AFIAK. But those Marshall 4140 combos he used in the 80s have a rather harsh, almost fuzzy tone when distorted, and I think the DS-1 does a pretty decent job mimicking that sound. And really, his tone - like a lot of our favorite recorded guitar tones, honestly - was kind of crappy on its own. But put it in the full band context, and it’s amazing. It had to blend well with Geddy’s bass and all the synths. Filling out the sound without getting in the way of the other instruments is not easy.
Peter does these reviews like an electronic and studio engineer. With beautifully unique arrangements. Nobody does this better. Thank You Sir.👂🍬
Thank you!
Do they have a band or something? The tunes in the beginning awfully resemble of Yawning Man!
It helps when Pete is an absolutely amazing player
That Custom mode really is a game changer! Adds the extra grit and tames the harshness that I think made the pedal more divisive in the past.
I really enjoy the honesty/impartiality of your demos. Thanks for all the great info Mr Thorn

Great playing by the way!
the circuits remained identical until 94
@@BenState yes but that’s when the competition started getting better, the multi fx racks we’re taking Center stage.
These Waza Craft updates I think are pretty great. Check out the Waza analog delay. Maybe the only untouchable BOSS pedal is the compression sustainer. I can't imagine how they could improve the CS-3. ;)
Wow, how it combined with the Ibanez was just beautiful sounding.
Great demo Pete. You play fantastic ! 👍🎸
Never liked the destroyer type guitars but that guitar sounds really good and well matched with that pedal. Great job!
Indeed it does, sounded great ! Happy holidays
Great review... as always. Cheers!
Sounds like You're doing some 38special there "Hold On Loosely"
Also i have read that Joe said, to him that the DS1 was always lacking
like it would only go to 8 of 10 scale on the gain, so with his Vox pedal ICE9
Overdrive (had one) went to 13 or 16 gain (above 10….i forget) Plus 14db boost button
Yes! I heard the same exact tone. 💯🎯👍
Well, it’s taken me awhile, but I’ve finally figured it out:
It’s not the pedals. It’s just Pete.
Feels good to realize this pedal isn’t that long-sought, magical, missing ingredient in my signal chain.
My wallet is safe.
My time is much better spent just playing.
I am at peace.
*CHECKING REVERB PRICES ON DS-1*
I am inspired to dig my old ‘81 MIJ one out of the cupboard and put in on my board now!
theres a diode you can cut in a DS1 that will give it the waza sound. They patterned the new custom sound after that mod.
Yup, the symmetric clipping diodes, snip one, you get asymmetric clipping. Tweak some biasing/feedback resistor values and there you go!
Excellent playing man
how cool it is that I live in the era of Pete Thorn!
this pedal delivers and is a great alternate on my board.
I liked it, when i first played, next day I loved it, into origin 20, also used into a marshall shredmaster clone, that sounds good.
I never liked the stock DS1 but I have a modded one that sounds incredible. It even works well as a clean boost.
Love my Waza Chorus. Now that these are super cheap, might have to upgrade
My 1st pedal back in 97ish was a Ds1 thru a 40w crate 2x10 solidstate combo.
I always think of bush too when I think of this pedal. The baritone in standard was rly reminiscent of that
That Ibanez explorer is so you. Want one. Guessing the Waza is less noisy than the standard Boss pedals. Good enough for Lynch, good enough for me Petey baby!
You play guitar awesome Pete
She's a wild man when you're doing that picking part you're almost reminding me of King's X
With all those wonderful guitars and amps Boss DS1 will work fine ofcourse :)
never was a fan of the DS-1 but the new custom mode is awesome ...i like it a lot 😉
Great video mate. Cheers 🤘🏼
Helpful great videos thanks. I was disappointed In my MT-2w. What did you think of it. I thought all too fuzzy ✌️
love the intro song!
Thanks!
Great playing
I’ve always liked the DS-1 for legato runs. Think Alex Lifeson’s solo on “YYZ”. He didn’t use a DS-1, obviously, but it gives me that vibe. It’s not a particularly pleasing tone in and of itself, but it works for that. And speaking of legato, it obviously worked well for one of the masters of legato (Satch).
Yeah, I know what you mean, because it can sort of smear the initial attack it could be good for legato
