I went to Cuba about a year ago and visited Havana and Varadero. As an American, if you want to fly directly to Cuba, you have to choose a reason to travel and purchase a visa. I chose “to support the Cuban people.” You still can’t use your debit card out there. Helpful tip would be to do the unofficial currency exchange with someone that host an Airbnb. For every $1 USD = $100-$120 Pesos. The official government exchange rate is $1 usd = $25 pesos. The reason why the locals pay more for usd or euros is because the Cuban peso is worthless outside of Cuba and if they have hopes of leaving the country, they would have valuable money with them. Overall, I would recommend it. It was like traveling back in time. The people, beaches, and live music were incredible.
Smoked a cig with Ari on the AYG fire escape while working with them briefly (the ep he was dressed like a judge) - we talked travel & places he’d been. I was super hype about this podcast. Weeks from that I went 7 countries in Europe after departing the job, a few months later Quebec Mont Tremblant (Learned to Ski) & just took an opportunity to do an India trip in January as my elective to finish my MBA!!! Joining the Patreon but Ive been meaning to say a conversation with him changed my life man - more experiences less wants.
I'm from Canada and have gone to Cuba multiple times and once we stayed in Varadero once and took a PRIVATE tour of Havana..key word PRIVATE. Don't use the hotel tours if you want a real tour of Havana. The guys we used picked us up In a taxi van and drove us to Havana, showed us the real Havana, the best backyard restaurants and the cigar factory. I highly recommend this route.
Saw Sean in Chatanooga and he had my wife and myself in tears. Absolutely blew our minds, immediately watched his special and told everyone about it. Stoked for his new show English Teacher, looks damn funny.
I was in Santa Clara/Cienfuegos in the late 90’s with a youth group. We stayed at Rancho Luna for a week and another week in the city with a local pastor. My take away was the same as Sean’s. Beautiful people, beautiful country but that glimpse into what it’s like to live under a dictatorship had a long lasting impression.
I was there in 2002 and 2012. It was amazing but you could see how much it was changing already. My highlight was going to a baseball game in Havana. I dont even like sports but the atmosphere was unreal. Random bands and dancers would just get up and perform in the stands. That and going to a nightclub at the top of a hotel where half way through the night the national anthem played and the entire roof opened up so you were suddenly outside. 10/10 vacation

Great Pod Ari! I went to Cuba in 2014 and chose to stay in Cuban homes instead of hotels. ( I recommend this specially in Habana) It was a different kind of trip because you get to talk to locals and receive recommendations from them. These family homes are either regulated by the government or not, so you’ll hear two different versions of the story depending on that.
Your latest Triggernometry ep was 🔥 listened to the whole thing twice, and yes people really need to stop taking the internet so seriously, it's literally breaking peoples brain.
I really enjoyed this episode, Sean is indeed a master storyteller. I didn’t think this would be a good episode, because I saw Sean at the cellar in July and he totally bombed. He is much more calm on the pod vs. on stage. Seemed like he had some Dutch courage. Cheers
Ari- please get Henry Rollins on this pod. Reading his book “smile, you’re traveling” right now. I know you talked to him on skeptic tank but he needs to be on this show.
36:50 Yats is so good. It's not five star dining by any means but it's cheap, filling, and delicious. I've lived in Indy for a little over 10 years and anytime friends or family visit from out of state no matter how much I want them to try someplace new Yats is the first place they want to eat. If you come to Indy it's definitely worth checking out and there are quite a few locations.
That mention of the best pina colada bought back memories. We had a day trip to a place called pilar beach and there was just this guy in a small shack making pina coladas and they were tremendous! Possible same beach 🤔
Perfect, I’m about to hop in the car and take a trip myself, into Pittsburgh for a little day trip. I like to wander through the back alleys and smell the hot trash, it reminds me of my days in New York City.
I fucking love Sean Patton he's been making me laugh my balls off for years! This was one of the best eps so far! Goddamn Sean really knows how to paint a picture! So happy he's hitting it bigger finally! Thanks for the silly ad reads, half head shave and toothpaste backwash LMFAO 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you Ari! Much love and respect. 😎✌️🍄💚🐺
I think you should have another skateboarder on but one that actually spent time in a city and country. Jerry Hsu is a LA based skateboarder and photographer that has travelled a lot. He'll have stories about his motorcycle trip in Vietnam from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City pre smart phone also would have stories about being in Russia. There are so many well travelled people in the world of skateboarding. Thomas Campbell is a nor cal artist and skateboard photographer who lived in Spain in the early 90s. He painted a mural in a hotel to cover his lodging. He also had an extended stay in Madagascar. Jonathan Mehring is a super well travelled skateboard photographer that has set up many international skateboard tours. He published a book with National Geographic called Skate the World. Also Eli Reed is a NYC skater that has embraced the world of dance hall and has spent a bunch of time in Jamaica, living as a local.
I goto Cuba twice a year (I’m a Canadian) it’s so beautiful. The people are so beautiful and it’s incredibly safe. Despite how we see them as being so poor and less fortunate they’re always happy! Always hugging and kissing eachother. It’s so amazing to watch. Also- they really want American money. They can only buy certain things and car parts etc on the black market with the things coming across the ocean from America. So bring lots of ones to tip etc. The food isn’t great but it feels like you’re at least eating real food unlike our poisoned and over processed trash in North America. Cuba is the best and I’ll continue to go there. You know you’re making a difference to the people when you give them tips etc. even if you’re kind of supporting a communist country at the same time. Those people are trying to survive there regardless if you agree with it or not. But also don’t goto Cuba because the less busy it is the better for us who like to go a lot 😅
Been to Varadero and Havana many times, trading a Sacramento kings hat for unlimited pork sandwiches carved off a whole roast pig was definitely a highlight. Varadero is way bigger than Sean makes it sound. The cave is the best nightclub there and is right next to a sketchy amusement park.
Those travel tips were top notch. I'm American and have traveled all over the world for basically my entire life. I'll add that speaking louder and slower in English isn't going to make someone in a different country magically make them understand you if they don't speak English. Also, doing that while faking their accent is even worse. Seen it a million times. Last but far from least, if you're an American and get yourself in a really bad situation overseas.... just tell them you're Canadian. Pro tip. You can get out of just about anything saying you're Canadian. Hate to say it but it's not just the American "joke" stereotype that Canadians are just aloof and goofy.
Ari you should get Chris Delia on here. I heard you mention him on that podcast you done at the comedy cellar, He’s hilarious and I think you two together would make for a great episode
$250 hookers, $300 go fetch guys, etc, they were moron gringos who overpaid for everything. I'm sure the locals were happy to indulge their wastefulness.
At the end you asked for suggestions for guests. He was mentioned during this episode but I suggest Sam Tallent! He's relatively well travelled (has a few travel show-esque videos on his YT channel) and just an all around hilarious dude! EDIT: Actually Sam has a couple videos about his travels in Japan and I don't believe you've covered that location yet

I've lived in most of Eastern Europe and Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Ukraine (after and before the war) - they are just fun - there are others I lived in and they are cool but not worth a mention I guess

Of all the beautiful things in Cuba why would you want to waste a day in a cigar factory?
The tour of the cigar factory was under an hour lol...I agree I wouldn't waste a full day of sun and beach to do that
