What Lifter Tap Sounds Like

- In this video I'll show you what "lifter tap" sounds like. Lifter tap is a pretty common issue on vehicles that use hydraulic lifters. This video has great audio of lifter tap with a little commentary explaining "lifter tap".
Note: This video is only to be used for the purpose of giving viewers an idea of what lifter tap sounds like. Just because your vehicle sounds this way does not necessarily mean that your lifters are the cause of this noise. All noises should be properly diagnosed before repairs are made. This video does not explain how to properly diagnose "lifter tap". Авто/Мото
You have NO idea how long it took me to find a video that had a clear sound of a lifter tap. I've been fortunate enough to keep all of my cars in perfect working order until recently when two of my cars got this noise. I suspected a lifter tap, as did a friend of mine, but I hadn't heard it before. Or, well, I might just not remember ever hearing it. Anyway, 10/10 for making a very precise video. I thank you for the content.
You're very welcome!
What did you do to fix?
@@lgarla23 take it to a mechanic and get new lifters
Well what do you think that chatter sounds like seriously!!! There's only one type of chatter from the top end. Good grief
@@batboy020876
Not everyone may be as familiar with cars as you are.
dang thanks, this is one of the only vids I could find that actually demonstrated the sound clearly
True
Just youtube a jeep 4 0 lol
And under 12 minutes.
Yeah seriously
They all sound clearly to me
This is the sound!!! Only took 2 hours to find it damn
Took me two days😂😂🤦🏽♂️
Took me 2 months😕
Should I worry about it?
@@jesalpatel6561make sure it isn't your hood being too low try lifting it to relieve pressure. If the sound is anything like in the video when the hood is up and the sound changes when applying gas as the video does. Then you have a major problem
@@jaysmith6569 its exactly same sound, changes with revs but disappears after a min or two.
Been searching for a lifter tap video to confirm , this is the only video that provides some proper insight and audio ! Thank you ! 😊
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you, sounds like mine, I was scared its rod knock, but as you said, iits going from the top...when hot no noise at all.
Thank you ' you're the only video of about twenty that l've seen that revs the engine so we can hear the lifters ticking in rhythm with RPM speed 👍
We had the same engine in a Plymouth Voyager back in early 2000s. I miss that van. Thank you for the informative video
I used to have that specific engine... its a damn good one too! Swap the valve guides, do a valve adjustment and run a high quality synthetic oil... Mine was still going strong at 554,000 miles. That is one of the best engines I have ever owned!
Are you sure you had the same engine? The one in the video is equipped with hydraulic lifters and does not require adjustment. It's a 2000 Plymouth Voyager 3.0.
You think replacing valve guides will fix a hydraulic lifter tick? all that will do is reduce oil leaking into cylinder. Hydraulic lifters self adjust - and you want to use a thick oil, doesn't matter synthetic vs conventional
@@BarboursAutoHelp yeah Chrysler isn't known for engines.. lol they had the AMC american motor corp inline 6 that wasn't even their own motor but In jeep Cherokees and grand Cherokees pre 2004 that can go 500,000 or more generally and was a non interference engine meaning if the chain or belts were to break for any reason the engine wouldn't break because the Pistons wouldnt reach the top or bottom because of not fully clearing
The 3.0 in this video is Mitsubishi/Chrysler design and not a bad motor at all when it’s taken care of.
@@Steve_Reject my dad had that engine in his base model 96 Dodge Caravan, it took a crap ton on abuse and still hit 370 000kms!
The most underrated video ever
Thanks for the video. This is the same noise my ranger 3.0 does. I was thinking it could be the camshafts.
Finally! After scouring the interwebs for days, searching for a legitimate clip of lifter tick, I eventually stumbled upon your video! Lol. I know mine is most definitely 100% lifter tick, but for some reason, it appears to be louder than most. I'm thinking about making a vid later, in order to document it, for everyone to see what they are dealing with exactly. I couldn't tell you how many clips I've watched, where the dudes only have face shots, speaking about arbitrary nonsense or clips which sound nothing like what they claim. I'm beginning to think that a lot of these "Jeepers" are just uploading these vids, just to get attention or to hear themselves speak. So with that being said.. I commend you for making a LEGITIMATE video for all to hear/see! You're a good man for that! Lol. Take care y'all!
Thanks
Where's your video ?
Thank you for this.
Helped me out a lot, thank you for your 10/10 video bro
This is a great straight forward video bro i was wondering why it comes and goes
Sounds like it's sticking intermittently
Mine isn't even coming and going either. Its a constant noise
Excellent! Thanks
Hey, I appreciate these videos, I listened to 2 of yours to help me explain it to my mechanic! Thanx!
I have a 2014 Chrysler 200s 3.6L with the same noise in the same area of the engine. I just recently on the 14th of this month got the car and a day later caught this noise happening. The mechanic at the car lot I was told said the car is fine and everything checks out. Total lie and definitely not certified. This car to buy is $15900 and with the financing it's costing me a crazy $ 25,717.28 dollars to pay off not including the crazy $300 a month for insurance. I have no credit and that's why. Came with the basic 2 year plan warranty so hopefully they will fix this issue that could cost me thousands more in the future. Thank you for showing this.
It's always when you're not looking for a lifter tap video you end up finding a gem of one❤
Love that!
Thank you!!! Now i know what to fix that annoying tapping!
Just by watching a video?! You'll need to have it diagnosed properly first. That's a lot of work and money to be wrong.
if the sound is lifter tap you can try taking the revs to about 3000 and holding steady for a couple of minutes. This will often pump oil into the hydraulic lifters and stop the tap. If you mainly do short drives it's likely to come back, but if that works, at least you know its lifter tap and you can try a flush and then an additive for lifters. great job picking up the sound in this video!
I am suppose to do it when the oil is up to temperature right, because this noise actually wears off after it warms up
You said a flush and additives,,, what can I do to stop this noise outside a mechanic?
@@malantra5730 mine may be more worn than yours. The sound goes after a long drive, but just getting up to running temp is not enough to eliminate the sound. I put the additives in but they made no difference.
@@jajajam1000 I used high mileage sea foam in my oil, and the tick went away. Up until I had to change the oil 300 miles later as recommended and it came back
@bigbrotheralb7448 when its in PARK.. just start the car and Rev it to 3000 rpms.. for 3 minutes
Had what I believe was lifter tap on my old car, 94 grand am. It happened immediately after an oil change. The oil pressure light came on too, which was a bit frightening. Fixed it by simple giving the engine a very slight rev! No light, no noise.
@@BlueRage Well, I filled the filter to the brim, and it never happened during any other oil change. Of course there's some oil in the engine that drains as you pull the filter, but I've never experienced a pressure light come on stay after idling for a little, combined with the tapping. Oil pressure typically builds almost instantly.
In retrospect it probably would've corrected itself idling, but a quick, mild rev instantly did the trick.
Good video demonstration of tic
Omg!!!! That's it !!! Thank you!!!
I've never seen someone so happy to have a lifter problem

Yes! Thank you mow I know what it is. This is exactly what I've been hearing in our car.
I suspected that this is what this is with my 1987 Chrysler 5th Ave. With only 77k miles. Hopefully I am wrong but once the mountains of snow disappear by the beginning of May I am getting it inspected. I just moved it for the plows just now in my apartment complex and I noticed it with my headers and all. It has sounded like this for the last 11 years but just now it was more concerning. Adam Perry Me too 😌 (FJ Cruiser)

@@wldmhd same ! did you fix it ?
@Jeuris Rosa dont fall for those scams, there are fixes you can do at home for it. Ive heard adding Lucas Oil Additive can help. Also putting Seafoam into your car, letting it run for about 10 minutes, then changing the oil.
@@michaelmurray8538 should you turn off the car after letting it run for 10 minutes?
Most engines built after 1980 have hydraulic lifters or lash adjusters such as the Mitsubishi-Chrysler 3.0L seen here in this video. Sometimes they develop a lifter noise that is from lifter bore wear, lifter plunger bore wear, or dirty lifter bores. What you can do first before anything else, is put 1 liter of old style ATF Dexron Type III in the engine, run it at idle until it is warmed up -then drive the car around the block for 5 minutes. After this, shut the engine off, wait a few hours for it to cool down. Now start it up again and idle till warmed up, drive it around the block again for 5 minutes, and then promptly change the oil as normal. Sometimes the high detergency of the ATF can knock the contaminants loose in the lifter bores and free them up which gets rid of the lifter noise. As an alternative you could also just change your oil with penzoil platinum synthetic, it also has a high detergent content and may be able to free up stuck lifters over time (the service period). You could also do both. This may or may not work depending on what is actually wrong with your engine, but its cheap and worth a try. PLEASE NOTE: if you try the ATF method, DO NOT drive your vehicle under any heavy load while the ATF is in the engine, only a light, grandma style "easy does it" drive around the block. Its also worth mentioning there are other options such as seafoam engine oil flush.
U don't mean warm it up and drive it around the block with only just 1 liter of ATF dex 3 and no oil at all right ?
@@b-bitter91 Lol, certainly not. *You would need to use the correct amount of engine oil the vehicle calls for*, -but substitute 1L of said oil with 1L ATF. This is an older method, may not be the best way for modern vehicles. Use these methods at your own discression, if you are not sure of what you are doing, it is best to consult a mechanic, or mechanic buddy who knows what he is doing!
I heard that if you rev it and it still makes the same loudness of tapping noise it’s lifters, if it gets louder with revs, usually it’ll be exhaust week
thank you! this is the sound i'm trying to find out. mine is quieter but it has the same tone and beat. not audible when idling or cruising at same speed but then gets audible when pressing the gas pedal for more power. How did you fix it?
I had this same sound so I pulled the valve cover and listened to each rocker arm bolt with a mechanics stethoscope. One bolt, #1 cyl exaust lifter was loud while the rest were a nice tick. Took it off and no push rod or rocker arm wear, torque was perfect. Compression is perfect and manifold pressure was a beautiful steady 25inches. Couldn't look at the lifter since I have to pull the head but no visible slapping.
Is it safe to say my lifter is bad?
2007 Chevy Silverado 5.3L 114,000 miles.
I can't tell you that it is beyond a shadow of a doubt. If you're not confident then it wouldn't hurt to have a tech diagnose it.
My 2007 Toyota Aurion (Camry V6) is making this same noise, taking it to the mechanic tomorrow so I’ll update you guys on the diagnosis.

Yup, that's exactly what my car sounds like. Noise coming from the top too.
My mkv gti does this on cold start but after it warms up it goes away. Any thoughts?
One thing you can do BEFORE you replace a lifter: My Xterra was doing this last year after I did my timing belt change so when it was time to change the oil, I poured half a bottle of Seafoam in the oil crankcase, drove it a hundred 55 miles one way, then another back home. Noticed the ticking went away and let it hot soak in the garage. Changed the old oil out then put in new. Almost a year later and it still hasn't come back. If this doesn't work for you, then I'd recommend changing the lifter and be sure to bleed them first.
What does it mean to bleed them ?
@@ZzLiGHTNiNGzZ Simply to take a lifter out of the rocker arm, insert a metal object (usually a pinhole size but some are about the size of jeweler screwdrivers) and press down until oil squirts out and you can manually press the lifter hydraulic in and out. If you can't, then they should be replaced.
@@Ty_ThatGuy gotcha thanks
SEA FOAM is the snake oil that cures all for the automotive industry. People add that stuff in the engine and then watch smoke coming out from the exhaust thinking that stuff is cleaning the engine. In fact it's just burning itself and smoking while ruining catalytic converters. Of course many people who use that trash put it in older engines that's experiencing problems. When the cat converter goes shortly after they think well it's old age. You don't believe me? Go ahead and add SEA FOAM to a brand new car engine and watch smog coming out the tail pipe. Did it clean anything in a brand new car or is it just snake oil burning and contaminating the engine?
@@Ty_ThatGuy when is an engine rebuild necessary?
Thx. 2002 z28 sounds just like that. Time for cam snd lifters.
2006 GMC Savana 4.8 LS engine does this on first start of the day and goes away in about 5 minutes. Engine runs perfect after that. Is it safe to keep driving?
I did my head gasket. Replaced cylinder head and used my older valves lifters and ended up with the love tap. I’m keeping her.

Damn . Scary sound . I thought I had Rod knock on my Porsche Boxster one start up morning, knocking lasting a day and a half . I started it up again another morning the knocking was gone , just like that.
Change your oil filter. May have had some blockage
First off, great video. Now what could I do to stop it? I have an 06 kia rio.
I had a 1990 Dodge Dynasty with this same engine in it. It made the same exact noise, along with some interesting oil pump noises. Because of the oil pump issues it struggled with oil pressure. I never tried to fix it because I saw no point in tearing apart the engine from a $500 car. Believe it or not that car made it at least 2 1/2 years before it started running into major problems.
Me too I had 2 of them great cars that ran forever
I think this might be my problem but I’m not sure? The noise occurs like this for however long and then goes away at random times for a few minutes
Hello, I hear it the more acceleration I do. Lifter additive may help solving it?
My 93 explorer is doing this but just when its cold. Not sure if I want to put the time and money into fixing it but it is nice to know what's most likely causing it.
if it goes away after it warms up its most likely a exhaust manifold leak
do how did you fix it ? did you have to replace some hydraulic lifters ?
I had this same problem in my 1995 Ford F-150 and although this is embarrassing to say it’s because I had 1 qt of oil left. Which surprises me because I just changed the oil less than 4000 miles ago🤷🏻♂️
Be sure to check your oil levels.
Mine has full oil and still doing it 🤨
I thought the noise coming from my Boxer engine with almost 140,000 was a lifter tap - this confirms it. Thanks for the video. It only does it when cold. After one minute it goes away and does not come back. Does this mean the lifter is starting to go and as long as I don't push the engine for the first few minutes (which is a good thing in any case) it can go another 50,000 miles without problem? Obviously if it is like this engine and constantly happening I will need new lifters. Thank you to anyone who knows how long they last in this situation (approximately).
That’s most likely piston slap. Super common on boxer motors.
@@KAS470 I found out what it was. It did make a similar noise but it actually was a loose cover in the engine bay. Cost was $0 to fix. I am a very fortunate person.
Have u fixed this? Mine ticks when i accelerate 😢 my mechanic suggested me to do my oil change every 1000 miles with seafoam because mine had a crap ton of build ups and sludge inside. It was gross.he said hopefully by doing these oil changes with seafoam will get rid of the ticking. Was also told no damaged to any internal parts. Past owner definitely did not do any maintenance. Now i gotta deal with it.
I have a 97 chevy blazer that is currently doing this. It came and went for a while but lately its constant. Pretty sure its a lifter tick after watching some videos. Doing another oul flush. Hoping it helps. Its embarassing driving to work everyday with it so loud. I turn my music all the way up 😭It's giving me high blood pressure.
Mine happens when I accelerate especially in sport plus mode using paddle shifters, it's a rapid sound that I can hear pinging off cars while I drive by them
My 16 charger is doing it . Got someone to fix it for 350 and I buy the lifter
So it actually was the lifters? I’m having that issue but taken it to two mechanics that claim “they don’t hear any noise”. It’s clear as day!
@@jayf1133 Actually it was the crank shaft that went, & I needed a whole new engine so if I were you I'd get it to the nearest dealer ASAP because if it's the same thing as mine your engine will simply conk out like mine did. The cost of the engine was $8800 to install & ship from Japan so Thank God I still had it under a 70,000 mile power train warranty, it had a little over 62,000 on it.
Yeah it happens to mine on a cold start. I let her warm up and then Rev it. Not hard revs but a good Rev and then it's gone.

Yes that is it.
My 93 Honda EX has this but when warms up not as bad so any suggestions? I do know these years need valve adjustment frequently.

what's the sounds like when you drive inside of the car? , does it make growling sounds when you push the gas in low speed?
So if mine has this noise would i replace it or add additives? Even when hot the noise is there
Ive got a question my noise is the same but coming in the drivers side(left) of the engine and ive got a p0430 same bank as the tap do you think theres any correlation 2010 t&c with the 4.0
Is it possible that it can only happen on cold start ?
Mines is very loud on cold start , after a couple of mins drive it gets dramatically quiet
If the heads were resurfaced, fresh parts and valves in the heads, I hear the noise, what does that mean?
thank you!!!!
What is the problem for this ticking sound?
mine sound the same, but my engine doesnt use hydraulic lifter, could it be the shim?
If drivinf will still hear it ?
Brother I thought I had low end rod knock but I think it could be valvetrain noise as I think my vtec solenoid or vtc solenoid has broken completely. Also my vtc actuator gear is broken too...The thing is I hear it more on drivers side wheel well and closer to underneath the car as opposed to the top end. Could I have rod knock or lifer noise? Or could it be one injector broken?...
I’ve got a mustang with the same tapping. Thinking about swapping cam back to stock. Could it be Work cam lobes?

People used to do it all the time. I've used a bit of transmissions fluid before to achieve the same goal. Transmissions fluid has a lot of detergent in it and does a great job of cleaning things out. Not saying it's good or the best thing to do to your vehicle.
