Damn Jordan, very well done!!! I was super impressed with the in-depth since look behind it... I have no idea if you are right, but you convinced me! Makes sense!!
Thanks Jordan! I'm 72, grew up on farms in Oklahoma, Arizona, and California, put up, took down and lived under a lot of "tin roofs" but never till now understood exactly what was happening,
I just geeked out to your video over my morning coffee. It's great to hear you talking about steeel again. Reminds me of when you first stared your video career with the welding series - which by the way I miss! Anyway, I built a modern outdoor fireplace (?) (firebox?) not sure what to call it, but it made out of Corten steeel. I love how it rusted and will protect itself, and would love to know more about how this works. I'll leave the coffee pot on ...
Great video. Please put blocking between the ends of those rafters over the beams. This helps drag the wind loads from the canopies back into the building walls. It also helps prevent a torsional failure of the rafters.
I dig your closing message. I'm a naturally curious dude so I guess I'm lucky. I always need an answer and I like to go find it. It's been a very helpful trait in architecture and construction and every other interest of mine.
Jorden - I’ll never look at metal surfaces the same. You now have me wondering about hot dipped galvanized fasters required for pressure treated materials. So, whats the geeky performance difference between hot dipped and electroplated galvanized? Never thought about it, in my mind Ive assumed it was about coating thickness. Tanks for sharing the knowledge
I’d like to know what the cost was. Years ago it was the cheap way to go, but the estimates I’ve gotten over the last decade has been more than I paid for the house & land.
If you want a colored roof buy your metal roofing prepainted, Both galvalum and galvanized panels do not take paint well when field applied. Also no warranty Factory painted panels are similar to auto finishes and usually come with a 40yr warranty
How does Galvalume react to radiant heat transference... how well does it resist dents from hail... can it be used for siding.. does it have Shear strength
It's hard to say. Galvanized steel has been around in the building industry for a lot longer, so we regularly see 50 year old buildings in need of new metal. Galvalum was invented in the 70's and hasn't been used as roofing material for nearly as long as galvanized, so I don't have a great feel for how much longer it lasts. Price-wise galvalum will win it for shear availability in a large number of rib patterns. Galvanized is pretty limited to a standard corrugations pattern, which can be pricier than r or u panel.
On a Mike Holmes barn recovery video, they used several steps on a rusty galvanized roof starting with blowers to remove the leaves and pine needles, then I believe they power washed the roof and ultimately they coated the entire roof with spray able cork. Would the cork prevent any further deterioration of the galvanized roof? Thanks.
Science is king! Thank you for an educational video; it took the layer of unanswered questions I always had in relation to metals. Would paint be enough to protect steel in a roof?
No visible fasteners? Any special tools? Sheets are what dimensions (16' x ?). What's the cheapest price you found or are the prices firm? Warranty if installed via homeowner? Are special pieces (ridge caps, Chimney flashing etc. the money sucker?) expensive? Is it difficult acquire and more expensive for 24 ga.? Is it easy for "Harry the Homeowner" to purchase or is this one of those secret society like HVAC guys only supplies to buy? Easy to cut? What did it cost for this home?
Damn good video. I had a pretty good physics and chemistry education some 30 years ago. But you just explained a couple things in a way that made me think! Thank you.
We have been using Zincalume in Australia forever, it is 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc and 1.5% silicon the genuine pruduct made by BHP is ZINCALUME® steel AM125 great stuff lasts forever outside and keeps it's shiny look for the life of the product
It looks like you didn't use any sheeting material underneath the roof overhangs leaving them completely exposed. Did you use sheeting material underneath the rest of the house roof? I'm curious to see how much extra noise you experience from the open back overhangs/roof when it rains. I'd think that it would sound like my old pole barn (that had a completely exposed underside of the roof).
You don't need snow guards in Texas, but we need them in my area we had record snowfalls last winter and I have them now after a snow slide took out my back deck. how about considering a video on why they are needed. Play Safe From Elliot Lake Ontario Canada.
@@treystills meant to ask about the green corrugated metal sheeting for the exterior of the house. I want to build my own home and was wondering if you can tell me where you got the material from.
@@justmatt9296 ohh the cladding...yeah thats not corrugated metal. Thats board and batten applied cladding. You could use a variety of materials to accomplish that look such as just 1x4 wood. Google board and batten
Wow! Beautiful explanation! I forgot about your welding background which made you into this metallurgist. Curious if you think the window casing should be painted black as well in order to have the windows stand out on the home??? Those beautiful windows seem to be a little visually weak.
Have heard everything's big in Texas, including the size of hail. Was told it can destroy a metal roof so if you could, please explain the cost/benefit of high dollar roofing material. I'M here to learn so if I'm wrong let me know. Exposed rafter tails, minimal eaves, great look but the damage to siding, erosion and if high clay content, aren't you asking for trouble? Great looking house though.
Would a parrafin wax mixed with zinc oxide sprayed on the underside of metal roofing panels extend the rust resistance ? Or would the wax degrade from the heat? Parrafin is a very long chained hydrocarbon known as a "saturated hydrocarbon" and is the most stable of the natural hydrocarbons. Parrafins are known as alkanes and are inert substances which don't react with other materials. Cosmoline is an example of a parrafin based metal preservative with a long history of success. I'm just curious, I'm sure someone has considered this topic before.
Jordan Smith oh yea, I meant more.. how does the steel chromium? Mixture in stainless work to protect the steel vs these coatings. Is it because it is mixed in ?
@@hellonoko oh, I see. Stainless works similarly to aluminum in the way it doesn't an oxide layer which protects the underlying metal. Stainless has at least 10.5% chromium which reacts with oxygen to create a chromium-oxide layer over the surface of the metal, preventing it from oxidizing further.
Very interesting that is , a very cool product we have in Australia is called (coreten ) it has the ability to rust to a very copper like colour and stop without going any further, mig weldable arc weld etc. Check it out ! I like it's characteristic in ya face old look , you may like to tell us how it works , cheers 🤙👌😀
Great video especially. On the Geeky stuff another issue with modern boats That. Speed up the corrosion is that marinas are notorious for having faulty. Electrical systems due to the harsh eviorment of high moisture and salt water tha t creates a lot of stray electricity to enter the water and making it speed up electrolysis on all the weakest. Metals Because of the way vessels are grounded that electrolysis will often eat engines. From the inside out basically and cause major problem they do make sacrificial zincs to mount strategically in the engines that. Will help direct the rlrctricity to that. Part with the hopes that it wont eat The engine metals that and a good wiring job can help prevent serious problems but then again as vessels get aged they. Often do have electrical problems that don’t get. Repaired correctly all the time especially when done at sea and when all the correct parts aren’t available often the crew has to just do a patch job. To keep the crew and vessel as safe as possible Therefore a roof and a boat. Would each have completely different enviorments As the roof isnt. Sitting in a live battery of electric I’m thinking that has something to do with why that roof system is better than the galvanized one In the manner that their coating protects the metal by sealing. Out the elements I watched your video Because i am hoping to build on my next home and i prefer. The thought and look of the metal roofs

Corten steel is also pretty interesting for the way that it rusts and then stops rusting.

would be cool to see some designs for zero penetration on the roof.

Please let us know what is going on with you and Matt
Don't drip any gallium on any exposed aluminum. :3

Prohibitively expensive?
Why not just use aluminum for the roof?
Why not just make the roof out of aluminium if its so good?
That could be an awesome roof!! But probably cost prohibitive for most people.
