You reminded of when I was a girl and my mother took us to ballet class. It was always so magical - the class, walking up and down their old fashioned stairs and looking out of the window at the pigeons and people, and going to a local place for delicious cookies afterwards as a reward for going to ballet. And my mother played piano for the classes, which made me feel so proud.

This isnt even much related to this video :) but just watching Katie do this stuff makes me excited. Im an adult beginner dancer (20years old) and just starting. My body type is not even typical ballet body even if I would be fit, im a bit curvy and I have thighs and boobs etc. But I am really inspired and want to work towards actually being good at this. I am doing lots of homework and pre training and stretching also. I always had starting ballet again (quit when I was 13) in the back of my mind but never really "found the time" and "nah maybe later". Then I found Katies channel and Kathryn, you inspired me to actually start again for real because I thought I wouldnt be good enough since Im not the perfect mold for ballet, but now I believe that with practise I can be good too. and this time Im going to work hard! It makes me so happy and excited and my dream is to go en pointe someday, even if I know it can take a long time. But im going for it :) someday im gonna be in the level enough of making through this class hopefully

Fantastic! :-) Go and dance, please, it's amazing! :-) I've started ballet when I was 20 too. That was more than 11 years ago :)) You can do so much that you can't even imagine it yet :-) I'm a "normal person" with a regular job and other interests + family, so... even if you don't have so much time to do ballet, I can confirm that you can learn so much. Now I can do quite complicated choreography (considering my age and body without physical ballet dispositions), point shoe work and I teach adult beginners sometimes :-) (Not kids, that's a completely different teaching level...) And I'm not done improving. Kathryn's classes are tremendous help :-) Try her class for beginners :-) Thighs you need a lot for ballet ;-) If you have a loads of muscles there, you have actually a little advantage - some super thin ladies without muscle strength have to build the basic muscles first, you don't :-) The body shape isn't the point. You can still have great technique :-) Just enjoy the dance, move to feel great, I'd say :-) Good luck! :-)

So so happy I found you. Thank you for bringing ballet class to ME. At home I can build my confidence. I get overwhelmed in class at Boston Ballet. I can still dance well at 49 but have so much trouble with remembering combinations in real time in class, so much anxiety with that which just makes it worse. It is all given verbally, not visually as you know. If you have trouble remembering combinations that are thrown at you, the joy in the dancing is lost. By the next class I can nail a floor combination, but it's too late at that point. This is helping... Thank you!

Katie I almost never comment cause I feel you get a million comments and can’t go through them all but I have to comment on this. You look AMAZING! You look so strong, your balance and lines are great, your extensions are fantastic. This is so amazing.
I have PCOS and have followed your story for years (I think I was diagnosed around the same time as you), your ups and downs have at times even reflected mine and my own struggles with dancing and trying to make peace with my illness.
Seeing you so good, so incredibly strong, so healthy, it’s super inspiring. I’m sorry that a lot of this came through a hard personal time but I can’t overstate how healthy and strong you seem in this video. I’m truly so happy for you and I’m leaving this barre super inspired not just to dance better and work harder, but to get healthier and stronger too.

Thank God for these videos Kathryn, during this time of self isolation. I'm getting better at the intermediate. I wish I could raise my leg as high as you. I have been doing the stretching routine for flexibility, I have had a few minor physical setbacks and had to be on "pause" for a bit, but I have noticed that I have become more flexible. At first I thought "let me see if I can do this in a month" yeah, now it's more like "let's see where you are in 4 months". I've watched many of your videos and just want to say that I like your work ethic. You're an inspiration to the "up and comers".

First of all, you look FANTASTIC, Katie. Love the hairdo, too. Thank you so much for this barre! I loved the songs you chose for the combinations. I will definitely give this a try and see if I can get through it! Edited to add: I tried this and surprisingly did pretty well through it. Only struggled a bit on the second degage and the frappe combination and a little in the fondu but I was able to mostly get the left side. I'll definitely be trying it again soon to see if I can do it more cleanly.

If you’re reading this after you’ve completed the barre: take a moment to be proud of yourself. This shit is difficult! Think of how much better you have become by taking the time to put in a bit of extra effort. Don’t beat yourself up about what you didn’t get right.
If you’re still working trying to get through it and maybe struggling a bit: remember why you dance. Don’t compare yourself to her or the people around you. Be proud of the fact that you’re here and you’re trying your best! Put on that extra bit of effort so you can have extra satisfaction later.

Thank you so much for your videos! I am a violinist but have loved ballet since I was little. I take classes still because I love the workout it gives me. Unfortunately because of the corona virus my school closed and I was afraid I would lose so much that I worked for. Then I found your online classes and I’m hooked! Everyday I do a different one (I have the whole day! No concerts/performances nothing here :/ ) but thank you so much! I will do them long in the future even when there is no virus! It’s good for in between classes and for your tips! I could never master a double pirouette but it’s getting better! :) thank you again! Hope all is ok where you are!

This is the third time I've done this barre and I am feeling so much stronger and am able to keep my balances for much longer (even had to pause the video a few times!) also quite proud of myself for being able to coordinate the arms and eyes with the degages properly for the first time. Thank you again! xx

Thank you Kathryn, so much, for making these practice videos! I live in such a small town, there’s not hardly any dance here. I’d have to travel 4 hrs for a class like this one. I’m 53, still dancing, but no where near as good as you. I sure wish I was. I had a total hip replacement in 2012 and my turnout has never been the same. Nor my splits. They’re so hard to do. Do you think I could do these again and be as good as you, even at 53 years old? Also, keep making these videos. I really appreciate them a lot. I should send you a donation, but don’t know where. Thank you so very much again! 🙏💕☺️

just did it - first time at barre in like 12 years - I suck -my thighs were trembling just from 1 plie and couldn't do frappe on after. too weak. it's a little too fast for me to feel my feet but better than just watching it. thanks- oh yeah- I have been watching your channel for a while - I just don't always log in or comment.

Advice if some exercises feel too fast for some: Download the html5 from you tube - go to speed settings, can play at 75%, 50% or 25% speed - after couple weeks move up to a faster speed - and you will soon be able to do them! Love.

This video is so lovely, thank you! 💕 I returned to ballet just over year ago after a ten year break and we’ve had three teachers over this time. It’s a specific class for returning dancers of all abilities, but I’ve noticed that my last teacher mainly just focussed on contemporary and lyrical dance sequences with next to no barre work, which I enjoy and really feel like I gain a lot from after such a long time. The other people in my class seem to enjoy these sequences more (as I personally feel they enjoy that they can be more ‘lazy’ in technique than if we focus a lot more on classical ballet training). I’m very quiet in class and take it seriously, which most in the class don’t either, so I feel like voicing my opinion over everyone else’s won’t do much, and this is the only class I can go to in my area. I’m stuck between being desperate to dance again and train hard and being unable to do much about what I’m taught. Help!

  • @esstown

I wonder, Katie, if in a video in the near future you would break down the double rond de jambe a terre slowly and also perhaps explain the purpose of this move? I've done a few since I've seen you show them, but I'm not really sure what I'm going for, specifically, in this exercise (and also in those "little ronds" from the Advanced Barre where it's mainly just the toes making a tiny circle on the ground). Thanks! love to you.
