I worked on a John Deere La series, 2 weeks ago. It only needed to have the fuel line clips, at the right place. It was sucking air. Fun fact. It had a steering knob too.

Maybe I am wrong but the drive belt looked to be in very bad shape to me

John Deere doesn't make engines. That's made by Briggs & Stratton.
