This is a useful look into the relationship between hearing loss, cognitive function, social connection and healthcare. One thing conspicuously absent though was discussion about the cost of hearing aids. The high cost of aids from most providers and the lack of coverage in medical insurance is a significant barrier to adoption. The manufacturers talk about how their technology is improving, but not about making their products more affordable. Costco is an exception in that they offer quality hearing devices at a fraction of the cost of other hearing providers. Given the enormous cost and burdens associated with dementia in the aging population, it would be wise to do everything possible to reduce/delay cognitive impairment; making hearing aids more affordable/available is one way of doing that.

Im 54 now and since 2012 I been dealing with vision loss and hearing loss due to type1 diabetes and ever since then I have difficulties in concentrating on tasks which has affected my short term memory but I dont feel like I have memory loss. I can no longer read or respond to a message unless its in a quiet calm enviornment. Before I was an excellent multi tasker not anymore though. Im extreemely greatful for my hearing aids that help me communicate with others. But i=I have sensaory issues and very sensitive to sounds that most people dont find bothersome like general background noise. So I no longer enjoy and cannot tolerate crowds and lots of chatter around me. So in some ways I find myself a little less social then before. Hopefully with my next set of hearing aids and with advances in technology I will find the right hearing aids that will work for me

I consider my long term memory to be as good as it was when I was younger. My short term memory is slightly worse than it was when I was younger. I’m a 78 year old man.

My memory is much worse as it was when I was younger. However, I have CAPD and AADHD, so my memory (short term and long term) has been crap my whole life. I am the "queen of sticky notes" in my office. I'm a 47 year old audiologist from Washington state.

I am 73 and my memory is the same. I never had great long term memory only because my mental state was always moving forward not backwards. Therefore I am the same at 73 as I was at 16. Live for the day!

My long term memory is just as good as it was when I was younger. My short term memory is a bit worse than it was when I was younger. I’m a 75 year old man. Thank you Dr. Matthew for your wonderful videos. You are a true educator, extremely professional and a man of integrity.

I am surprised to hear Dr Sarant because, as a Canadian audiologist, the collaboration between audiologists and physicians she describes as being her goal is very closed to how we do it in Quebec, Canada. I am an audiologist in a hospital and most patients I see are referred by their family doctor and I always send back a report with the hearing test results and my recommendations. I naively thought it was like that in most countries, especially Australia where there is government healthcare and it is a rich country.

Male 77 plus 6 months. I think memory is about the same as 20-30 years ago. I have always had some, at times, inability to recall a name. Usually given time I recall the name. My brain seems to store names in a place that I can’t access immediate upon demand at times. I have tried to maintain focus on my ability as my grandparent and uncles have experienced significant loss. Upon asking my family does not report a difference in my ability to recall or engage with others. I am using hearing aids more regularly now due to recommendations like discussed in this video.

Age 69, "a little worse" I think my memory (which used to be so good that people commented on it) has been declining since I was about 40. Happily, I seem to have a lot of cognitive reserve so I'm not drooling on my shirt quite yet...

I have noticed that here in Italy Hearing Aid Specialists are grossly misinterpretating data and what exactly is being said in research papers and dime blatently associate hearing loss are THE cause for CD and when they cite papers they hardy knlw what Hazard Ratios really imply and publish on their web sites percentages of people at risk because of hearing loss while they advertise hearing aids and I feel thst it is a serious breach of ethics at stake.

Memory somewhat between a little worse and much worse at 64. It is the loss of names and vocabulary in the moment for me. Short term memory is unaffected as far as I can judge. Long term memory is as sharp as ever.
