DaVinci Watercolors Made in the USA // Tried & True Review Series

  • Today we are looking at a brand of USA-made watercolors that I have been using since the late '90s. The thing I love most about this paint is that you can purchase economical 37ml tubes of watercolor which is great for teaching. I originally ordered this paint in a 6 color mixing set from an artist magazine to use in my classes and it was an excellent value for money. It still is. I usually buy my paint at Blick because I work in a variety of mediums and often need other products so I wait until I hit free shipping to order. DaVinci Watercolors on Blick: shrsl.com/4doxx (affiliate link) I purchased some of my paints directly from the DaVinci website because they were running a good special back in November and offered more colors than Blick had (honestly, the free holiday trio drew me in) davincipaints....
*This is not an affiliate link, nor is this a sponsored video. I purchased all of these paints except for the sample of Denise Soden's Earth Friendly Palette colors which were set to me by a viewer (thanks MJ Pete!)
I did a couple of studies with the paint for this review. Since this paint has been in my normal rotation for decades most of the paint was mixed with other brands. I do have this tutorial done with daVinci paint if you want to see it in action: • Pen & Ink Watercolor P... Actually, it looks like I did a review back then as well but this one will have more colors. Between the 2 videos, you will have a lot of info regarding this paint to see if it is right for you.
    Pros:
    Price
Available in 8ml, 15ml, and 37ml tubes as well as half pan and sample dot sets
Transparent pigment info on the website and packaging
    Made in the USA
    High Quality
    Cons:
I have none, this no-frills brand delivers good paint. The paint pulls away from the sides a bit when you fill a full pan but it is still easy to rewet. That can be a sign of a bit too much extender but in use, I have not found it to suffer. It does make me feel that they are not quite as high quality as M Graham, Qor, or Daniel Smith but I think I might have that bias due to how affordable they are and I want to own any biases I have in my reviews.
Bottom Line, I recommend these paints. They are affordable and reliable. The ample tubes keep me painting without being afraid of running out and in a teaching setting I can share with students without breaking the bank. Try a tube and see what you think. Ultramarine blue deep is one of my favorites but you really can't go wrong.

My first experience with Da Vinci paint was with their Autumn Set. I instantly fell in love! Their colors are so vibrant and they stay vibrant when dry. I LOVE their Nickel Azo Yellow. It just glows! And if you're into color separation and granulation, their Joyce's Mother Violet is to die for. 😊

Lindsay, I did this last week! I found a ratio of about 3:1 Manganese Mix to Red Rose Deep is a close approximation of Joyce's Mother Violet. It is close in hue to their Ultramarine Violet, but has beautiful separation of colors.

Their Manganese Blue is so beautiful. I Iike it much better than Cerulean, it’s similar in color but easier to rewet and use. Perfect for skies. I believe it’s the only brand that still uses the original PB33.

Never clicked on review so fast! I love my DaVinci paints. I agree with your assessment completely, a solid workhorse that’s easy on your wallet. I can own M. Graham and QoR but I know the moment I’d buy them, they’ll become precious, and I won’t use them. 😅 I’d rather have DaVinci big tubes and mission gold pure pigment set - both reasonably priced and not so precious, still artist grade, win win! Loved the review, already watched twice to make sure I didn’t miss anything 😂❤

Hullo Lindsay, I have used all of the major brands, even some outliers and I am not convinced that there is a better quality/priced paint anywhere! I have successfully filled pans and wells without cracking by pouring in smaller sections. I press the paint as it dries and I never have trouble rewetting! I have contacted the customer service when I wanted to try a new color of paint and I was transferred to the owner and he was happy to send me a half pan! Needless to say I purchased a tube when it came out! It was the new(then) neutral tint, I was taught to NEVER use black nor white in my watercolor paintings and if you need black you mix it for a deeper intense color. Now if you have trouble mixing your grays ultramarine and raw sienna mix a beautiful gray so easily I was purchasing those colors more than any other! Now Denise Soden has curated a couple of gray paint colors for DaVinci and you better believe that I got them both!
Thank you for sharing this “new review” with all of your subscribers and you are more than welcome to call me Michael. I am sure that I have said so before and if you rather use screen names then that is cool too. Please take care, be safe and enjoy your day! 🥳 🎉🤟🏻

I am a huge Da Vinci fan. There are several colors I choose over other brands, after trying so many brands, quin red, perylene green, nickel azo yellow and cerulean blue are a couple. I much prefer Da Vinci over Daniel Smith, hands down. They are so much better to re wet and they crack way less than DS when dried down, not to mention the cost difference, AND there is no fluff or sketchy business happening.
Denise's grey is a fun separating color I think you would like a lot.

YESSS I prefer Da Vinci to DS as well, the only thing is I wish Da Vinci was sold in stores the way DS is. But I've often preferred to wait for my Da Vinci's to ship than to buy the same pigment in DS from the Michaels down the street.

Although the manganese blue is not pure PB33, the 37ml tube was affordable and I knew I wouldn’t feel precious about using it. This was interesting thank you!

The dot cards are $30 plus free shipping. Those dots are at least double of what you get on Daniel Smith and Schminke dots, even triple with some. And you can rewet those dots multiple times. Well worth the money. And, unlike some other brands, Da Vinci updstes their dot cards often to add their newer colors, but the price stays the same.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

@@thefrugalcrafter it kinda reminds me of the non plastic/Styrofoam egg cartons? Similar to cardboard but not cardboard, if that makes sense. It holds up great to water though; I've definitely soaked some of those dots with way more water than necessary by accident and it holds up perfectly.

Here’s a fun note about the dot card palettes. The material absorbs watercolor beautifully. I painted a blend (wash) of the colors contained within across the top of the palette. Then I realized that I could paint the bottom (outside) of each pan with the color it contains within. A fun project and very cool.

I’m one of those who was introduced to watercolors by a teacher who started us out with a palette of +/-20 DaVinci paints about 10 years ago. I absolutely loved them and like you, added more colors over time. Curiosity and recommendations have had me adding some MGrahams, qor, schminke, Daniel Smith, sennelier, Holbein, W&N, Van Gogh(and probably more-especially if colours or pigments weren’t included in the DaVinci range). I’ve not had any issues with cracking or pulling away from the sides of pans or (plastic) palettes 😅 with DV. IMO, DaVinci compares exceedingly well with any of the other brands in every way. They’re indeed a great product that I use with joy and would recommend without reservation! Thanks for another great review, ❤!

It was older tubes that did that. I was not aware they reformulated around 2006 when I filmed this so that would explain why my pans filled from older tubes cracked.

  • @alicem1111
    @alicem1111 5 месяцев назад +6

I kinda hate paying for dot cards too- maybe if it could turn into a credit if you buy paint. But I really do love them and think they’re so valuable. The davinci one- for example- shows a-LOT of overlap in the yellows. It’s good to know. And they do give a very generous sample. I wish I had had it before purchasing a giant tube of their yellow ochre- which is not to my taste. I’m waiting patiently for the Rembrandt dot card to come out one day- I love them and would like to see the reformulated colors.
But their quin rose colors and quin alizarin crimsons really stand out. The quin alizarin crimson is the closest I’ve seen to the samples of genuine alizarin crimson I have. And their viridian is easy to rewet. In fact, all of their paints have been easy to rewet, but not sticky.
The 37 ml tubes are an unbelievable bargain. I can see why you recommend them to teachers. I think they’re a brilliant way to build your main palette and then fill in with colors/textures from other brands (nothing really granulated wildly on the dot card). Some of davinci’s preselected palettes look interesting too, but I haven’t tried them.
Thank you for the review and your thoughts.

Great video! Da Vincis Viridian PG18 is my favorite PG18 from all artist grade brands I've tried yet. It's one of the brightest and most pigmented, its alot easier to rewet then most brands and it granulated REALLY heavily on cellulose paper...not so much on cotton but on cellulose Da Vinci's Viridian PG18 granulated beautifully. I also want to add that WN Cotmon paints were A LOT better than their modern counterpart...I have some vintage WN Cotman watercolor paints from (according to my research) i think the 90s and they are almost better than the modern day professional WN watercolor paints. But all of my Vintage watercolor paints are better than their modern counterpart..which is sad but also blows my mind when I paint them side by side. If I were brave enough to go on RUclips I'd make a video comparing and swatching all my vintage watercolor paints side by side to their modern day version. The differences are just ridiculous. Anyway great video, thanks so much for sharing and much love. ❤😊

I'd love to see a comparison. I think it's odd, legacy brands loosing quality at a time when there are brands like Paul rubens and mijello and shinham making high quality and very affordable paint. Even some budget paints are crushing the legacy brands student grade these days. Davinci is solid, their quality is as good as ever, maybe better as they've expanded their range.

Bought my first tubes of DaVinci right around Christmas. Tried them out specifically for their Manganese Blue, also got a Burnt Sienna Deep and the full dot card sampler (worth it for me as I'm completely new to their paint). I love the two tubes I bought and am getting ready to buy some more! I prefer PR101 for a Burnt Sienna since I use it as an earthy orange (prefer it over quin burnt orange). Their deep is really nice, deep and rich, makes my Cotman one look pale and puny.

I feel like Da Vinci has 1/8 to 1/4 pan pallets for 35$ to try their entire range. They literally have sooo much paint compared to any other literal dot card I could literally take these out for many paintings. But after you have your favorite colors/ slash workhorse pallets then find the unique colors in the brand by getting the swatch info, Denise’s mixes for one are beautiful and theirs the Joyce’s mixes which are just nice to know the pigments to mix it yourself. The manganese blue and that colbalt turquoise deep, and the one opera pink are very unique to davinci. The pink had such a smooth texture compared to any other I have. I want to try Roman smalz rare pigments next, I find just getting the normal colors boring I want colors I have never seen.

    Awesome overview/review Lindsay!
These are such a great value and pigment quality, so much so that I personally would call them my overall 2nd favorite after M. Graham. I think what they do best are the more modern organic colors, both because most are available in the big 37ml--Quin Rose (any iteration, they have a few) & their Quin Alizarin are two I use a lot and therefore get that size for those as well as Arylide (Hansa) Yellow, and your swatches show how punchy they are as well as my personal experience has. I get their Phthalo colors as I found M. Graham's are particularly sticky with the honey, but I have to praise their PR254 DaVinci (Pyrrol) Red the most. I tried Winsor & Newton, MG & Daniel Smith before it, and while I preferred the pigment's luminosity & easy, clean mixing over Cadmium Red in most instances, I found those 3 brands would show small white pitting/speckling once it dried on several papers. Da Vinci's is the only that has not done this, so it's got an indispensable spot on any palette for me now as my neutral to warm red. I also love both iterations of Burnt Sienna from them, and if I didn't have 2 tubes each of Cerulean & Ultramarine from MG, I'd have those from DV as well.

Thanks for another wonderful, thoughtful review. I bought Miranda’s Advent Box (best purchase ever, brilliant idea) and it included Da Vinci paints so I got to give them a real workout doing 12 projects.
I love them! My other palettes (too many) have been on the sidelines (except the QOR). Not sure why the Da Vinci paints don’t get much love from the other RUclips channels, so your review was really appreciated. Thanks!

I see a tendency to promote and review new sets of youtube. I guess they are more interesting than random tubes of paint we like. Plus the new releases get the most attention. DaVinci is a tried and true workhorse we can kinda forget about I guess.

I feel like all my paints crack especially Daniel smith, ds shrinks more than any of my other brands. And it depends on the pigment with any brand I find. My sennelier paints that came in tubes cracked but not the ones that came in pans.

It's unfortunate that they don't sell in India. :( I have always wanted them because i feel like these paints won't be as precious to me as my Daniel Smith are, but also won't get in my way when I'm learning and experimenting!!
On other note, The Camlin watercolors from India just got revamped and they now share pigment information! :P

I just bought a bunch of 37 ml tubes of DV gouache. DV is my "3 squares a day" paint for years now, as I adore their clarity & brightness. I'm not sold on the gouache--yet, as I LOVE the Shinhan boxed set I just bought. Clean & bright--"get in get out" kinda thing. I'd love to see a couple of paintings from you solely using DV. I don't like people who offer "reviews" of paints sent to them & all they do is swatch them out, make their determination. I heartily welcome your reviews, as you've actually USED them to make paintings! Thanks loads, Lindsay!

Their dot thingies are crazy, huge dots and I think it's like $30 for the entire range. But add shipping if you don't have enough items for the free shipping. The only reason I've hesitated to buy it is egg carton material makes my teeth hurt, ha. That sound! ::getting it out of my mind:: Thanks for the review. My first experience with Da Vinci was with Denise Soden's Earth Friendly palette and I haven't looked back since. I will still buy sets from other companies because I still like to collect and try other brands, but that Earth Friendly set has everything I need for my subjects and style of painting, and of course, I've updated it with additional Da Vinci colors. Also, I've never had my Da Vinci paints crack, like ever, and I've had a ridiculous amount of tube colors from this brand.

What kind of voodoo is this?! I've been researching DaVinci watercolors to set up a palette, and here you post a video on them today! I purchased their dot trays for $30 a month ago & just swatched them the past few days (there are 5 of them with 24 dots each, except the last one). I've never purchased dot samples before but I am trying to choose my paints with a little more care. I'm not experienced as a watercolorist! I already have some other brands but want to experiment with different ones, plus I seem to have the same condition as you & want everything. 😆 (Just kidding - sort of). I've bought about half the ones I want & now have to save up some money for the rest. Too bad I didn't develop this obsession *before* the Black Friday sales. Ha!

So okay curious now Lindsay 😂 so you said that davinci was a cotman equivalent back in the day, so would you have said cotman was professional grade?? Or would you consider davinci not a professional grade then?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  5 месяцев назад +1

Well, I think DaVinci has gotten better, and cotman has gotten worse. 90s cotman used rare pigments in higher qualities. Now cotman is made in china and although they did a good job to match the colors the quality and saturation is not as good. I only had a few colors back when I did my first review, and I liked them as basics, but they didn't knock my socks off like M graham did. Between the 3, they were between m graham and vintage cotman. I also had a larger assortment of m graham and cotman, so that might be why they seemed better when I had only a small sample size of DaVinci. I guess buying the extra colors gave me a better feel of the range. Also, there was a reformulation of DaVinci around 2006, so things have changed a bit for the better, I think. I don't think I'd say they are as good as m graham, but they are, in my opinion, professional. I wouldn't call old or new cotman professionals because W&N had a professional range that is more pigmented.

I love DaVinci, they’re my go-to brand! At first I used them because they were the most affordable professional brand, but now that I’ve tried other professional brands I still prefer DaVinci overall! I use a couple specific colors from W&N professional and I do also love M. Graham, but I own 72(!!!) DaVinci colors and think they are wonderful! I definitely prefer them to Daniel Smith, which I think is good paint but totally overpriced and overhyped.
