DANIEL!!!! I have been working the last 6 months for the handstand and, even tough i had a good progress, i was still not able to hold it for more than 5 seconds. With your F****** tip about keeping your eyes on a fixed point for balance i was able to hold it for 10seconds, several times! Such a 'small' detail leads to so much progress. Damn, im happy!
Hey man, when practicing your handstand, do you have your core engaged ? Because that was the main problem for me: my shoulders are really strong enough (Im doing the BBR program, and doubled the phase 3 and now am doing the exercises weighted) to do a handstand properly but I figured out I was not engaging my core so my shoulders were doing all the job and it's not enough to maintain your balance. Next time you try it, make sure to fully engage your core, it's weird at first because you feel really tight but you'll be able to hold a bit longer.
Hey man, thank you for your insight. Yes, one of my major problems its indeed my abs and hamstrings, which influences my body alligment. (i was fat all my life and developed some bad posture habits - anterior pelvic tilt and such). Since i started doing mobility\flexibility 2x a week i saw great improvments on my body posture and body control, which in turn is resulting in better handstands. To note, you are totally right when you talk about engaging the core :) Stay strong!!
Same here. So many months with such a little progress and BANG BANG BANG a video from Daniel and a tip about keeping my eyes on a fixed point BETWEEN MY HANDS (not in front of) saved my handstand! Thanks!
@@levone8958 like at the end of the training just holding it? what do you mean by opening the shoulder? also sorry for commenting on a 4 year old comment, really appreciate your answer
@@alieeeeennnnnn Actually, I recommend doing it BEFORE training. I can explain why. To do a handstand, you need good shoulder mobility, you need to be able to be in that position with your hands above your head with a flat back. The wall handstand really helps with that. By opening up your shoulders, I mean that it increases your shoulder mobility to a point where you can get the mobility for a handstand easier. I know this was 4 years ago but truly chest to wall handstand helped me so much. About a year after my comment(I wasn't very experienced when I wrote it) I achieved a handstand like this ruclips.net/video/Hv6W0RuNuJ8/видео.html&ab_channel=LevonE
Thanks for the tip on closing the eyes in a handstand, it was a really unique experience. I instantly became much more aware of the exact pressure I was putting on my fingertips, and where my body was in space. Also required much more focus to stay up, but I was surprised to see that I managed for quite a while.
Ever since the gyms were shut down from coronavirus I was forced back into calisthenics kicking and screaming. But since my return to bodyweight training I've made amazing gains again without even having to touch the steel. This guys Daniel has been a huge blessing and motivator for my endeavors. Calisthenics are now the primary backbone of my regimen and I feel so much better without all the aches and pains throughout my body from heavy lifting. Thanks Daniel for the time you take to properly demonstrate the complex mechanics of each move. Very helpful and much appreciated.
Once again a video full of valuable tips. Several of your videos have truly made a difference in my performance. Tons of videos out there but I find myself coming back here more and more often.
Excellent video Daniel, I really enjoyed the many drills for improvement and your honest opinion on them, especially for those who are starting to move beyond the basics. You never fail to deliver excellent content, cheers!
Come on! Lets face it, this is fantastic advice. And i cant find and have not seen anybody else advising how to do a handstand in this training manner. And believe me, ive checked a lot of tutorials in this discipline. This is by far the best!!
i love you man, you work so hard at portraying the best way possible to succeed in the world of movement and mobility, you learn and share with such great execution!
I just started a challenge with my brother, to see who gets the best handstand by december 15. We both have no hadstand skill. He's 170cm, around 56kg and visible abs (not much muscle tho). I'm 180cm, 69kg and no abs (when i flex it's kinda ok). I'm going to have to work a lot harder than him to get it, but i watch FitnessFAQs and I work hard, so I'm pumped.
its true holding a handstand still in proper form is much harder than being able to ajdust to imbalances by walking around on hands. holding still in place is the more difficult progression i am trying to achieve. thanks the tips.
Thank you so much for this Daniel. I'm always so excited when you post another video... Request: could you post more videos of your leg work at the gym (with commentary) I always love those. Cheers.
Yuri Mar recommends handstand walking as a first progression towards one arm handstand. There's a big difference between handstand walking in a controlled way, and just continually falling forward. Walking a specific distance and stopping in a controlled way at a specific stop point (which you've intended before you started) requires a lot of control.
From personal experience of doing handstands, the hand bands were the only thing that got rid of wrist pain. Though it's up to you if you want to buy it. Personally it's an equipment worth buying :D. Good day to you sir!
You couldn't be more right Dan, I'm not a gymnast at all (swimmer) and I've been trying to learn handstand by walking on hands (easier). I am able to walk around a tennis court on hands, but now I have issues just staying in a handstand position.. Thanks for all of your helpful videos :D
very nice handstand video with some good exercises to improve the handstand skills. I love your channel it gives me a kick to go out and start my training I have a little thing to improve your handstand ( blue head ). Take a look at your breath while you practice handstand, it reduce the pressure in your head and improve the time of staying in handstand.
really cool work! you mention that your lack of flexibility is preventing your tuck, it doesnt look like thats your problem. if you look at your mid lower back it is arching out of your ribs which makes your pelvis tilt and lock in a counter productive position. try laying in a "knees together"- childs pose (yoga term) and notice the position of your pelvis, this is the position you want to recreate in a handstand - which means that you have to close your chest at the sternum, this will also contribute to closing your shoulders a bit, which you would have to counter work as you want to keep them open. hope it helps :) I think you have a good eye for what you are doing, and I want to mention that there are several good techniques for how to do an aligned handstand, as well as how it should look. I have a handstand built on Russian circus teaching from one of my old teachers. it is a technique that builds on aesthetics and is quite picky on alignment. the main comment she would have for you is to stretch and open up your shoulders ps i have a walking exercise that contributes to balance :P I see walking as falling and catching your self from falling. so let yourself fall over, catch yourself from falling by making two steps and then you block and balance for 2 sec. now you do the same by falling under (towards your stomach. 5 to 10 reps
you say that banana handstand is not a real handstand, but only up until a few years ago(just a bit longer than our lifetimes) the banana handstand was the norm and people were still doing crazy tricks with it. plus that some people structurally cannot open their shoulders and may have to make compensations overall informative video though. I do think handstand walking is useful, it's just a different skillset than static balance. It builds a different level of strength and control while leading better into more dynamic skills and tumbling variations. The issue is when people try to walk to correct their static balance. as long as it's intentional I think handstand walking is quite useful. It teacher structure, weight transfer, and learning how to balance without balancing. like many other skills, sometimes it is performed well and other times not so much
Hi Yuri, The issue with online communication is it doesn't always convey the complexity of a topic. I'd love to talk about handstands in a single video for an hour but the general attention span just isn't there. Agreed - The banana handstand is a necessary body alignment if one does not have the inter-joint co-ordination as a beginner or mobility to assume a "stacked shape" In this video I'm making reference to static balance, therefore a walking drill is counter-productive in my eyes. I just feel there are a host of other drills which teach weight transfer in a more controlled manner which ultimately will ingrain better habits. Keep up the good work with your teachings sir. Daniel
