John Robins, is quickly becoming the voice for all "Bad Golfers" the questions he asks and the points he makes are exactly the same as I went through when I first started. Great podcast episode 👏👏👏
If you haven't done it already Rick, you need to support the Bad Golfer to break 90! Great podcast really enjoyed (only been playing 18months so a very bad golfer!)
if there's something that I'll always remember in John's words of wisdom, is if I'm putting for par, that means I've gotten up there just as it's meant to be played. Thanks Rick, Guy, and John, as a bad golfer, this was so good.
Oh John !!!! Would love too see these 4 playing a round at Ricks club. Record it. Great humour from Alex & Oh John !! Professional stuff from Rick & Guy. Get it on chaps.
John Robins is brilliant, his radio show on RadioX with Ellis James was great, think now they are on BBC Radio 5 Live. John's knowledge of Queen is legendary, a very funny man. Great Interview Rick, you let the man speak.
Great listen and so relatable! It makes a fresh change listening to the stories, ambitions and struggles of a high handicapper like myself. Don't be put off by the run time of this video, loving the content Rick & Guy, keep it up.
With regards to practise etc. I was "lucky" to play my early years golf on council coarse in Glasgow. Constant elevation changes on each shot. Rough was really rough, sand was hard and greens weren't perfect. I think it made me a better golfer as used to hitting irregular shots. The first time I played a members course, I ripped it apart because the quality of the course was so much improved. Loving this new feature of your channel Rick. Thank you
As a terrible golfer for me, this is the best podcast you guys have done. It was great. Would love to see more stuff geared at the bad golf community. Should have more views all day long.
I believe Mark and Amanda have hit the nail on the head here. I Would like to see a match between Guy and John with Rick as Johns caddy for the day. Can you help John break 90 while coaching him up and let Guy feel the pressure of his own course management and not getting beat. That would be a very fun round of golf to watch. Once again you show and videos are amazing and I really enjoyed listening to John speak on his game , and what really seems to me as speaking for a lot of weekend warriors who play golf. Great content Gents.
Talking about things goin' 'round; I was watching Rick and John Robins playing golf last week, then I watched a bunch of Alex and John playing on their channel, and that led me to this channel, which I didn't know existed. This was great guys, thanks for making the effort!
I have started and given up playing so many times, I have never broken 100 mainly due to having a huge slice, until I aim off to the left then I hook it. I have tried everything I can find to try to get better and have come to the conclusion that golf is 70% in your head. Great video guys, I will keep trying and probably failing to crack the 100 barrier, but I will always love the game.
Really enjoyed listening to John as I'm a similarly bad golfer. I think the problem with golf is that every golfer regardless of their ability thinks they should be playing Augusta from the tips. Golf clubs, associations and golfers alike are all too set in their ways and overruled by their egos. The busiest and most successful course in my area, and there are lots of courses, is a par 67 and something like 5200 yards. Dress code is relaxed, it's reasonably priced and it's kept really well. 15 years ago it was mainly newer golfers and hackers like myself who played there and the "proper" golfers frowned upon it. These days it's packed all year round with every type of golfer you can get and you even have to book twilight rounds in summer. That course isn't successful because of price as there's cheaper courses 2 miles away, it can only be because it's inclusive and it's manageable for almost everyone. There won't be enough proper golfers in 30 years time because golf is hard, the easiest thing to do with golf is to give it up. Courses should offer more tee positions and actively encourage people to play from forward tees. I've had conversations with so many people who say they won't go to x course or y course because they're not good enough or would be embarrassed etc etc. John spoke about shooting 55 over on the Oxfordshire which is a long challenging course, imagine if they had a set of tees 100 or 150 yards further foward on the 4's and 5's. People could go and play these premium courses, have the premium experience and walk away feeling like they've not been water boarded for 5 hours.
I'm a little late to the party here, because I just recently decided to get serious with my golf journey. I'm a fan of both Bad Gold and Rick Shiels. This was a win win for me. I enjoyed the content!
I play off 25ish, when I play with better players, I make sure I don’t slow anyone down and they generally are very encouraging and go mental for all my really good shots...like I chipped in on 18 to end the round I remember with a random older single golfer and he came and fist bumped me from like 35 yards away, had to get the fist bump in b4 finishing his putts....really encouraging stuff... golf is great for that 👍🏻
Just listened to the post cast and the crazy thing is that I then wanted to watch it lol. Actually even after the second run though it does seem so different when watching it! Oh and as for “bad golf” I am just happy to get the ball up in the air!!!! 😀
I am a bad golfer and I never get embarrassed when playing with better golfers. I play with a right mixture of abilities and no one mocks any other player
1:09:30 i do get what John is talking. I'm a 16 handicap and of course playing with a low handicap( single digits) helps a lot to improve your own game. On the other side I've ve experienced the frustration of lower handicaps waiting while you're struggling. Usually low handicaps are players with a very low tolerance for failure and while you're playing a decent round of golf for your handicap if the lower handicap makes 1 mistake, that will affect their card or what they were aiming for the round, it wont be a fun day anymore ( not everyone but many low handicap players are like that) they forget about having fun playing and they are just there to perform. And that for tge high handicap player is really an unnecessary pressure.
Just like to point out I recommended John’s channel in the comments of your bad golf video! You’re welcome 😉 Loved this podcast and the recent challenge video with John. Great content! 😳
There is alot to be said about ranges and mats. A couple of courses near me have summer grass tees - they are TORN TO SHREDS within the first month. I'd rather practice of mats as I know enough to realize when I hit in correctly off mats. But I get the point.
In all seriousness, great first guest. Really relatable to me also being a bad golfer. Very similar ambitions. Super podcast this week gents! I’ll be searching the bad golf channel!
In the US, most pros at golf courses will do "playing lessons", which get you out on the course, and learning more about playing the game, as well as seeing your shots actually fly through the air, land, roll, etc. Are playing lessons really that rare in the UK?
Rick Sheils, I saw a man with a GPS Watch, GPS on the cart, GPS on their phones, Laser Rangefinders, Yardage Book for the course and a Local Caddy with 20 years experience along for the ride 😀 2 hours using the practice facilities before Tee Time, 10 practice swings on every shot, didn't take his Drops, just dropped a ball & played it as his next shot, everytime... Shoots 106... You meet some weird folks out there...
Great interview. Rick how about getting a caddie for John and let's see if he can break 90? I would definitely would love to see that and it would be a great way to show that you should play what the course allows.
I’ve found I don’t like hitting balls off the deck on matts at the range I prefer off grass, I like the softer ground as a bad golfer I’ve hurt my wrist hitting those matts! Lol.
Really good video. I think it's easy to forget most golfers are #badgolfers or pretty inconsistent. John's wish for 18 will not cure he itch to be more consistent though. Hope to see some more crossovers between the shows.
Honestly and with respect, I think you're putting too much stock into course management John. Your head dips forward in your backswing and it's killing you. Keep your weight further towards your heels for the WHOLE swing. Love Bad Golf and all the best to you and Alex! (For context, I'm a former club champion)

So I tee up with the pro to 9 hole so there was a gap behind use so no pressure on her... OK we tee off 150mts then another 150m chip putt. After 9 holes she did a 45 on a pair 36 . OK I should tell you she has arthritis in both wrist and her left elbow and she 63. Not bad for someone who never played golf. Kiss Keep it simple stupid To many people try hit the ball to hard. If you drop 2 club swing Easyer make a big difference. You if you swing hard with a 9 and slice it swing eayer with a 7 iron you draw it. EAL from Random Golf Club break 75 from a U.S. or Euro Open Course. That'd be an interesting match to watch.

Great podcast episode 👏👏👏
This was without a doubt the best podcast to date the format of “famous” amateur golfer talking about their golf was brilliant.
