In my area. Last year there was a group of 3 hens with about 20 poults. Between the 3 hens this was in July. Buy eary Oct.that flock of pouts was down to about 5. I've seen this before.
In regards to what Dr. Chamberlain says around the 56 minute mark about the kill rates on public land, I hunt a small 40 acre plot of private land situated in the middle of a WMA. At the beginning of this year, I heard around 7-9 gobblers within and around our property. The amount of hunters that trespass and/or shoot the turkeys at feeders are ridiculous. It sounds like Patton's 3rd Army rolling through Normandy there somedays and by the season's end there isn't a gobbler around. I don't see how populations can sustain themselves let alone prosper this way
And so many of those hunters will blame everything under the sun for the decline, except their shotguns

Should Spring Youth Day or Weekend be moved much closer to the regular Opening Day- rather then 1 week before thereby giving that Dominant Gobbler another 3 or 4 days before he is taken out by a Youth?
I am all for the Youth Season. Perhaps each State should move that opener closer to the regular Spring opener.
Missouri has had the season set with this research with our opening day. And cut off at 1pm and only one bird in the first week and we are still seeing this decline. While I'm following the information on every but of research I can. I can't understand how my sate mo has been set with this research on opening day and harvest its been that way forever. Other then just habitat and weather I don't see a opening day makes a difference. While also understanding the science it's a contradiction

it seems to me that when the turkeys were boomin' in the central shenandoah valley of virginia on public land, there were a lot of young clearcuts around. it just stands to reason to my way of thinkin'.
Central Georgia is being deforested. I can remember the first time I was in the turkey woods and heard a logging operation in the distance. I didn't know what it was. Now it's commonplace. GA is now a patchwork of habitat, from good to not good.
Hi, yea broken is what I refer to it as and that is the common term about monarch butterflies habitat ironically. That region will probably not have turkeys as someday. There are many states that have already under gone that scene, honestly I can't believe they have no morales, but they feel wildlife just can live elsewhere. That is the common belief until there is little left. I'm betting that habit will not be an attractive result to the landscape before long and as a result concerned people will get alternatives to compensate because of the event. Wildlife tax as a dire necessity to preserve places that are the only remaining places in states that can support it's wildlife rather than seeing it perish before their very eyes. I saw in my monarch news letter in December BTW they expected less forest for overwintering monarchs in Mexico so yea it's atrocious. Yea I really like turkey hunting I've been doing it for over 40 years, lots of fun and good eating.
They could make a tax much like the highway tax so proportionately the way an owner uses the land he pays. So if areas of land that could be bought that would let's say keep an area unfragmented that could remain good wildlife acreage. So the tax pool would only be used for those things. An example would be let's say your neighbor had a 100 acears of woods and mix and maybe logged it off once upon a time or so but can't till or crop it just say and the says heck I think I'll sell it for development, let's says it's bad fragmentation to an area well then the apply to the wildlife tax fund could be used. So it could be interesting.
And Dan if I had it my way I would decide too call it the Moonfasso tax.😶🌫️
Good show, the situation is similar to the monarch butterfly in one difference that it is more critical. I hope the turkey doesn't slip between the cracks and return to a century ago which was from a different effect of course but I think the new modern land owners whom are very concerned about survival of life are going to become active and make sure wildlife get their share to be comfortable in. Have faith and look for it because I'm sure it's comming.

@@turkeysfortomorrow I know how you feel and rightfully so turkeys are a truly magnificent bird. I really think though that money could get short for the capacity of the extent needed for the future, the mindset of wildlife is in equal to dollars ratio will be short. And I don't think big money is going too drop the wad on them it's not their business. It's right to call it what it is without being mistaken the solutions are also what they need too be as well. Lastly wildlife is what we are, entirely what we were once but that shouldn't mean because it was once it shouldn't have it's fair share of range as well in its future.

Too many hunters not enough turkeys l started hunting turkeys in 1986 lots of turkeys up until around 2015 everyone is a turkey hunter now back when the turkey hunter numbers were low lots of birds now its opposite lots of hunters not near as many turkeys

Anyone ever thought about national bag limits? Which would keep people from travelling around the country and killing gobblers like it's their job. Limiting non-residents to one gobbler since the travelling turkey hunter seems to be becoming more and more popular?

@The Hunter for one that's to much government overreach that I'm not ok with. And you can bet every states population is different. Most travelers are going to maybe take one bird and be out anyway if they are even successful witch isn't all that often most residents don't even fill their bag limit most take one bird n get back to the grind. Turkeys are managed state by state. They are not a migratory bird as like waterfowl witch Is federally managed then state managed. This bird doesn't fall into that category. So no I do not want them to try and make a national bag limit for an extremely small amount of the population that does travel and is actually successful on said trip. I just don't understand why you would even suggest this. Being all the facts. Lots of states already have very limited opportunities for non residents only. As in Florida most public is quota only. Texas the same. Mississippi is now special draw the first two weeks of season for non residents. Travelers aren't going to make a impact on a state wide population. Unless every single traveler is hitting the same piece of land and that ain't going to happen.
@@thatonesatelliteguy oh wow, I didn’t realize any of that…I’ve only been hunting turkeys for just a few years…like 40…only thing I’ll decently agree with is your first point. Not sure I’d be happy about them being at a federal level.
I am not in favor of a national bag limit but I am not opposed to requiring turkey hunters to purchase a federal turkey stamp just like they do with a federal duck stamp in order to fund wild turkey research and habitat conservation.
