  • This chant is derived from an inscription on a 1st century BCE lead tablet found at Rom, Deux-Sévres (Roman Rauranum), in Western France, describing a ceremony carried out in honour of the Gaulish horse goddess, Epona. It consists of a number of names and titles given to Epona in late Iron Age Gaul, some of which are also found in the British Isles:
    Epona, Rigantona,
    Atanta, Eponina,
    Catona, Dibonia,
    Epotia, Vovesia.
Translating the names into English, the chant reads as follows:
    "Great Mare, Great Queen,
    Horse Goddess, dear Epona,
    Battle Queen, Good Goddess,
Powerful Mistress, to whom vows are made."
This chant is one of several that form part of the Winter Wolf Healing Ceremony recreated for the Druid course of the British Druid Order.
With thanks for inspiration: the Quileute people of the Olympic Peninsula; Kate Fletcher and Corwen Broch; Rhiannon, a.k.a. White Horse Woman.
The form of the chant and the drumming are (C) Greywolf, 2019.

I work with wild and semi feral conservation ponies. I played this while I was out on the nature reserve with them. They stood to attention, listening and sniffing the air.
Even my own horses stopped what they were doing to stand tall and listen.
There is something magic here, the horses and ponies tell me so.

Thank you for your kind words. Very briefly, a Wolf came to me in a vision many years ago. A few years later, I found myself on the Quileute Reservation on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State on the night of the weekly Potlatch feast and Drum Circle. I was asked to speak in the ceremony, couldn't think what to say, so sang a Wolf chant I'd been given among the stone circles at Avebury. I didn't know at the time that the Quileute trace their ancestry from shape-shifting Wolves, nor that one of the village Elders had a premonition of my coming 5 days before I got there. After some discussion among the Elders, I was made a member of the Drum Circle. I've kept up the connection since. Making ceremony with the Drum Circle there deepened my understanding of Druidry in ways I'm still working out! Wolf spirit calls to Wolf spirit, even across great oceans...

I wish there was a version without the horse whinnies in the background. To someone familiar with horses it's very distracting as those are distressed and upset horse noises .

The tablet contains details of a ceremonial sacrifice carried out by a devotee of the Horse goddess. All I did was extract the various names of the goddess she gives in the inscription in the order in which she gives them. I did it just because I wanted to translate them, but as soon as I saw them on the page, I knew they would work as a chant for the goddess and the Horse spirit.
