Thank you very much Eileen Stokes. Have you watched part 2? If you have not I attach below. When I uploaded it the film was supposed to be in one (it's 42 minutes long). However, it "split" into two. ruclips.net/video/bR5GYXi217k/видео.htmlsi=pkROxYJuPACwsk8r
What a wonderful video. I remember the station in the early 80s when traveling from Crewe to Liverpool. usually a class 304 but on this occasion a class 303 sliding door unit
Great video !.Probably going to bore the socks off you now.I left Kingsway(the cenny) on a friday afternoon in 1961,went to the station on saturday morning spoke to the then station master Gerald Nuttall to ask if there were any jobs and started on 2-10 Monday as a junior porter.Had always spent time on the wall opposite Number 1 box train spotting with among others Geoff Kelsall,Ian Cook,George Ireland etc.so had an affinity with the railway from an early age.,used to watch the Deltic from my bedroom window in Baguley ave.Others working on the station at the time were Wally Mottram & Lee Taylor in the booking office,Bob Meredith (my next door neighbour),John Garnett & Alan Davies on the platform. After Nuttall left,he was replaced with a welshman named Hughes who had come from Hooton on the Wirral.Had some great times, using the empty carriages from the push and pull on platform 1 as a place to take girlfriends !.Remember seeing Enoch Powell (my hero)getting the train back to London from platform 2 after a meeting when he was minister for health.i then spent some time as a box lad in Ditton No.1.Some of the signalmen i was with were Les Harper from Halebank,Bill Leather from Ditton and Harry Chimes from Runcorn. The only ones from Ditton No2 that i can recall were Dougie Doughty & Don Freeman.Shunters in the yard included Ernie Shakeshaft and George ? Forshaw.I then joined the permanent way team with Ganger John Bob Houghton,Juddie Houghton,Bob Hitchmough. All happy days and am surprised that all these events and names have been recalled after watching your video, thanks a lot.Dave Beesley
Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed this and found it very informative. I remember seeing the FA Cup whizz past Platform 3 as Liverpool took it home after beating Leeds in 1965.
Phil, it's a wonder I never saw you! I don't remember the team returning, but I do remember a train full of Liverpool fans returning the following day. It was steam-hauled also as the electrification was off on Sundays during the summer of '65. That's why I was at the station as a 10 year old train-spotter. On Sundays there was an opportunity to see some of the expresses steam-hauled. By 1965 nearly the all of the expresses were electric/diesel hauled. Although there was still plenty of steam-hauled freight trains.
That's right Anthony it was a steam train carrying the Liverpool team. Mind you I was there as a young Liverpool fan rather that tran spotter. Loved your video as I only lived about 150 yards away from Ditton Junction at the Fish and Chip shop.
Well I'm glad you found the film informative Phil. Of course with the re-opening of The Halton Curve and the re-introduction of the Lime Street to Chester and Wales services in 2018, and also with the despot that is to be built on the land off Lovell Terrace, who knows the station may re-open in the future. I would only be too glad for my prediction at the end of the film to be wrong. In my opinion it was the withdrawal Chester services in the 1970s that killed the station.
An informed and interesting video. Sadly even less of the station remains today as you correctly predicted back then. Thanks for uploading. Cheers, Steve.
Great video brings back some lovely memories, thank youxxx
