Stephen Douglas spoke to a colleague saying, "This damn fool is going to get shot by some other damn fool". At the time members of the House and Senate would regularly carry canes, knives, and pistols onto the floor of the House and Senate. A few days after Sumner's speech, Preston Brooks, a cousin of Sen. Butler came on the floor of the Senate and brutally beat Sumner almost to death. Things did quiet down once the south seceded and it was only Unionists left. Even so, there were most definitely impassioned speeches on the floor of the House and Senate.
