Honestly I feel that once the family steps in to put the person into a care facility, both the person and their animals welfare has already declined, and home support should've been in place sooner. The animals end up being the last thing the rest of the family think about. If the old guy had been getting adequate home help, there's no way the dogs and their fleas would've gone unnoticed.
@@abnunga Realistically though, that's exactly when family and services should intervene. For example to help them stay independent, have a cleaner once a week to help them keep on top of things, hire a dog walker, have either "extra leftovers you didn't want to go to waste, so thought you'd share", but actually you've made portioned meals they can just easily microwave, come over or invite them over for evening meals, enrol them in a community club where they can socialise and get a hot meal, or even simply arrange a meal delivery service. Any of those things in place would result in supporting them to stay independent, while also having a regular enough schedule where they're actually seeing people, thay if there's a deterioration, it gets noticed much sooner. For these dogs to have fallen through the net, I'm fairly certain the old guy also did. A lot of times, families "didn't realise it was so bad" until the person ends up in hospital, because they don't keep in touch regularly enough to notice them deteriorating. If you can fail to notice a whole person, you could definitely fail to notice their little dogs. Considering we saw that Sandy had an old flea collar on, and both dogs had previous vaccine records, chances are that back when the owner was capable, the dogs were loved and looked after. The fact the family weren't certain of whether Sandy was the daughter of Molee, or even that Sandy was the dog's name, shows they've been out of touch with their grandfather. If you stayed in touch, there's no way you wouldn't know what his elderly dogs were called, especially considering he's had them for years.

The cat is a bit older, but nobody was taking care of her. They weren't grooming her, she was underweight. And my friend has been doing what she can for her, but the cat has kidney issues and only has a few months left. So my friend is trying to make that time as pleasant as possible, spoiling the heck out of her.

Putting grandpa in a ‘home’ sounds like nothing more than dumping grandpa at the homo sapiens shelter and the dogs at the canine one. Yes, I am beyond aware sometimes the extra care at assisted living is needed. However it is very obvious no one had bothered taking care of grandpa until they no longer could because they would have seen the condition of these pups and helped arrange basic care. I imagine there was a similar intake process going on with poor grandpa at the care facility as these pups here. Have seen it many, many times. But for the grace of God, the same fate awaits this gentleman’s family members when they are elderly. And, yes, I walk the walk ... have cared for elderly family and their pets. Allowing them this bond is immeasurable for all involved. And, yes, I also inherited and care for beloved pet when the time comes.
Hope the previous owner and granddaughter finds out these dogs have a home. It must have been hard on the previous owner. This will help him feel better.
I agree Susan, these dogs were probably loved but the owner couldn't take care of them or afford dental care/grooming. I wonder also if no one was really caring for him that well either.

Before we start throwing stones at the people who gave these dogs up, we need to think about the situation the people were in. If grandpa had to move into a 'home', he obviously wasn't able to take care of himself or his dogs. His kids or grandkids may not live anywhere near him so were unable to really keep an eye on him and the dogs or maybe they just aren't one of those real close families let alone- gasp- dog lovers. I just take solace that there was the Vet Ranch safety net to catch them and send them on to a good home. Merry Christmas Vet Ranch and followers.

Yes, I've worked with elderly folks who struggle due to dementia or severe physical issues, to shop for, feed and provide basic care for themselves, and do the best they can for their pets. They love their long time pets, but often they don't even realize how poorly the pets are doing. (Dementia is an absolute bitch!) Often the animals end up euthanized. Happily these two found their way to Vet Ranch!

Would you throw the book at someone who had developed dementia, and is past the point of understanding that their animal isn't doing well? Or at someone whose pain doesn't allow them to get out of bed some days? Ultimately, yes, alternate arrangements need to be made for those animals. But sometimes things head down hill quite suddenly, or there's an actual diagnosable impairment of judgement that leads to things getting out of control before that need becomes evident to others. Or, that makes it extremely difficult for those folks to actually put together and execute those plans. In other words, there may be no "excuse" for neglect. But sometimes there are *reasons*.
As a proud daddy (or maybe now, a grandson) of a 10 years old grandma german shepherd, it is both sad and beautiful to see my once a hyperactive puppy grew into a rather lethargic corner sofa dweller. She still love it when we ask her for a walk everyday, but not as far as it used to be. Maybe a mile round back and she's back to her favourite corner sofa. We love her so much, and she's still shows her attention for us every morning by waking us up.
Aww she's the grand dame . My daughter has a neighbor with a very shy gsd . She's a fence jumper and is finally comfortable with me and will fly over the fence and come see me 😂
I grieve for senior citizen pet owners who may have a limited budget and/or nobody to help them get their dog(s) to the vet for routine care, vaccines, and grooming. It's been my experience that senior citizen pet owners love their pet(s), and the pets provide companionship at the end of life when family members are too busy with their own lives. My husband and I donate to and fostered for a pet rescue. We're aware that dogs are often surrendered when the senior citizen has no alternative. It's heartbreaking.
And sometimes the owner has lost perspective on what the dogs are supposed to look like, and still think they can get things back in shape on their own. Sometimes the family wants to help, but isn't allowed, and it can be hard to take the step of forcing the issue- reporting your family member for neglect. Very sad.
I wish the title were different. I suspect Grandpa loved these animals even if he was no longer able to care for them properly. These dogs likely were wanted. They simply need a new home able to provide proper care for the rest of their days. Just like Grandpa.
Poor grandpa is in God's waiting room and probably doesn't know up.from down at this point. May he be granted a quick and merciful exit without suffering. Dementia is hell.
Dr. Karri was right. Just trimming their toenails must have been such a relief. I mean think about it. If you've never experienced it, take some small sticks, stuff them in the toe of your shoes ( not toe-less) and walk around for a week. Then let's discuss how it feels. When my Samoyed, Rocky, was 10 years old he collapsed while I was taking him for a walk. I took him to the vet who didn't know what was wrong but the next day another vet there, who happened to be a diabetic, diagnosed him with diabetes. So I had to learn how to give him 2 shots of insulin a day. I never thought I could give a shot but after the vet showed me how and handed me a syringe I 'just did it'. I don't believe myself how calm I suddenly got and how easily I gave the shot. Anyways, I'd give Rocky a treat and while he was busy with it I'd be done with the shot.
@@feralbluee sadly misdiagnoses happen. i have a mineratre schnauzer who smacked her belly trying to jump up stairs and she became really weak and didn't want to move. we took her to our normal vet and they said she hurt her back and gave her painkillers. didn't get any better so we took her to an emergency vet and turns out she ruptured her blatter and would have died if we didn't bring her in for a second opinion because she needed emergency surgery. shes 11 now and I'm so beyond grateful we still have her with us :)
I would take them in a heartbeat! We have 5 dogs now! My goal is to start rescuing more senior dogs. They deserve a good home until the very end, not just until they aren’t convenient anymore! I wish you had a transfer system where drivers meet up to keep relocating dogs to their adoptive families. Like an Underground Railroad! Thank you for fixing them all!
It is sad the owner had to give up the girls but a blessing for them as well. Hope their past owner is doing well, considering their circumstances and I hope the girls have great years ahead of them.
It really upsets me when something like this happens, and no one in a family will step up and take in a supposed loved family members pet. That dog or cat, or whatever is a part of them and to coldly get rid of them, when they are grieving a loss is so horrible.

Sweeties the both of them. I’d love to take home a senior dog to give it a good and happy end of life. But (amazingly) where I live in a Canada doesn’t have any dogs needing adopting. The first hour one goes up for adoption is snatched up.
How did animal overpopulation get solved? Or is it just that euthanasia is incredibly high? Like, do 99% of the animals that get taken to a shelter immediately get euthanized and the 1% that is redeemable get adopted?
@@typoriver3651 good question! I volunteered at an ASPCA for 9 years. Euthanasia was rare. We NEVER had a shortage of animals, just a shortage of adoptive homes!🤔
I do know that if it gets too cold (freezing temps) then stray animals just don’t survive to end up in shelters. In areas like that, animals (usually cats and dogs) are usually sent from shelters and rescues located in warmer climates to adoption locations in these colder places. It frees up these places to be able to take in and helps these animals find loving homes.
@@butchieblock9118 my friend works for the NHSPCA. They're constantly overcrowded and overwhelmed with how many animals they have to take care of. They take in every single case somethone gives them, and unfortunately a lot of them get euthanized because they just do not have the resources. Just two days ago my friend was telling me about another sweet cuddly dog that went through the behavioral tests. This dog passed like 7 out of 8 tests with flying colors. But failed 1 about it being aggressive towards smaller animals or something. That was enough for it to get put on the euthanasia list just because they could not quickly adopt an animal out that failed even one test to justify the expense and room it would take up.
Excellent, excellent work to all: Vet Ranch, Abandoned Pet Project and the wonderful adopter(s). These two could easily have ended their days in that shelter, alone, unloved and in pain. The kindness of everyone involved makes this a happy ending and I want to say Merry Christmas to all of you and many happy years together to these sweet girls in their new family!
I hate flea bites - I could not work in a vet clinic for that very reason. I get as itchy and inflamed as poor Sandy. You guys never seem bothered by them!! Happy they are staying together but Molly needs to eat separately so she doesn't steal her sister's food LOL

I like the way your so thorough with all their different ailments. I've got cats....and was recently told by someone on IG that dentals are NOT needed on cats. They said they don't get them in the wild so they're not needed. I always thought that they def were needed. Pls help.
Always- always I watch your videos as you take such thorough, professional, expert care of all your patients- never thinking of doing the bare minimum when cost is such a consideration these days in health everywhere. That alone makes me emotional let alone your manner, and recording all the stages... I know the Puppettes are fine hearing their Dad describe them chasing their cattie to the other end of the house, and reverse, and being chased back again. Been following these two on Vet Ranch Roundup for a while now. Glad they have a happy ending and got a new forever home. Sandy looks so much better with her hair grown back in. As for Molly, I have a soft spot for Dachshunds, black-and-tans in particular, since my Mom used to have a DachPoo named Tammy. However, it seems the cats think this is the Squeaky and Kiki show!
Two senior dogs get adopted for Christmas. My Christmas spirit has been renewed. 🥰 I've never laughed so hard watching one of your videos as I did this one. "Girlfriend, we gonna do your nails." Question: When the dog's nails have grown out so much and you clip them don't you cut into the quick that's grown out too? Do you do anything special in these cases?
You can see that they took little slices when the dogs were being prepped for the dental. You can see when you are getting close to the quick from the look of the cut nail
You can see where the quick ends on any nail even an extra long one. It's usually looks like a pink line, so cut just past where it ends. If you're not sure what the quick looks like/where to trim , Google or ask your vet.
I found a senior little dog that was dumped. She was so sweet. I took her to the shelter knowing she was dumped. I sobbed the whole time. My dogs were seniors too and I couldn't imagine getting rid of them. I was grateful for every day I had with them.

I can kind of understand that grandpa wasn’t all there so he he didn’t really take care of the pups. I’m more upset about his family for not watching out for him and his pups. I wouldn’t be surprised if the family got him the dogs so he wouldn’t be lonely and then ignored him. All around it’s a sad situation.
How.do you know the family was anywhere nearby? They may have lived a thousand miles away, realized on a phone call the old guy had lost his marbles, come out to investigate and found a total mess.
A lot of the older generation seem to think flea treatment & nail clipping is a vet job & v expensive, so it gets left. I've spent a lot of time showing my elderly neighbours how to buy nail clippers online (£5) & get spot on treatment delivered at v low cost from online pet stores. (£4 a month). I've given them brushes of mine & shown them a 2 min brush is all is needed after shampooing once any matt's are cut off. Small long hair breeds take a lot of care & are prone to a lot of genetic ailments: buy your relative a short hair . Every walk I do in the park I see elderly people with terribly matted small breeds. Matt's are painful!
@@christinebutler7630 Or he was actually fairly mentally competent, and refused help. He could have had financial or mobility issues, but wanted to keep himself independent. Sometimes people just lose perspective and can't see how bad things have really gotten, and it takes a medical crisis to bring things to a point of intervention.

Those poor pups. Someone should have helped grandpa better with his pets. I'm sure they were loved but maybe he could not afford the bills? This shows WHY gramps needed to be moved into a new home. The neglect from the deteriorating memory and paying attention to his dogs needs. Especially the over grown nails is a major sign; besides the flea issues.
You folks are amazing! I know you put in a lot of work on every pet, but to see how much treatment, care, and love these girls required is a real eye-opener! And it was worth every minute to see them transformed into healthy, really happy dogs! What a joy! Thanks for everything you do. That includes making me so glad I have my fur baby scheduled for a dental!
Sandy is an example why many senior citizens should not have dogs. This level of neglect is criminal abuse and I don't feel any grace for the old man and his family who allowed this level of abuse. Shame on that old man and his daughter and any other family member who was so heartless. Sick

Dr. Karri was right. Just trimming their toenails must have been such a relief. I mean think about it. If you've never experienced it, take some small sticks, stuff them in the toe of your shoes ( not toe-less) and walk around for a week. Then let's discuss how it feels.
They can finally put their feet down and walk correctly. Plus fixing their teeth and itchy skin.

When my Samoyed, Rocky, was 10 years old he collapsed while I was taking him for a walk. I took him to the vet who didn't know what was wrong but the next day another vet there, who happened to be a diabetic, diagnosed him with diabetes. So I had to learn how to give him 2 shots of insulin a day. I never thought I could give a shot but after the vet showed me how and handed me a syringe I 'just did it'. I don't believe myself how calm I suddenly got and how easily I gave the shot. Anyways, I'd give Rocky a treat and while he was busy with it I'd be done with the shot.

@@feralbluee sadly misdiagnoses happen. i have a mineratre schnauzer who smacked her belly trying to jump up stairs and she became really weak and didn't want to move. we took her to our normal vet and they said she hurt her back and gave her painkillers. didn't get any better so we took her to an emergency vet and turns out she ruptured her blatter and would have died if we didn't bring her in for a second opinion because she needed emergency surgery. shes 11 now and I'm so beyond grateful we still have her with us :)

I would take them in a heartbeat! We have 5 dogs now! My goal is to start rescuing more senior dogs. They deserve a good home until the very end, not just until they aren’t convenient anymore! I wish you had a transfer system where drivers meet up to keep relocating dogs to their adoptive families. Like an Underground Railroad! Thank you for fixing them all!
Teeth, nails, eye and skin condition are from years of neglect! Gum disease is very painful.
It is sad the owner had to give up the girls but a blessing for them as well. Hope their past owner is doing well, considering their circumstances and I hope the girls have great years ahead of them.

It really upsets me when something like this happens, and no one in a family will step up and take in a supposed loved family members pet. That dog or cat, or whatever is a part of them and to coldly get rid of them, when they are grieving a loss is so horrible.

Sweeties the both of them. I’d love to take home a senior dog to give it a good and happy end of life. But (amazingly) where I live in a Canada doesn’t have any dogs needing adopting. The first hour one goes up for adoption is snatched up.
How did animal overpopulation get solved? Or is it just that euthanasia is incredibly high? Like, do 99% of the animals that get taken to a shelter immediately get euthanized and the 1% that is redeemable get adopted?
@@typoriver3651 good question! I volunteered at an ASPCA for 9 years. Euthanasia was rare. We NEVER had a shortage of animals, just a shortage of adoptive homes!🤔
I do know that if it gets too cold (freezing temps) then stray animals just don’t survive to end up in shelters. In areas like that, animals (usually cats and dogs) are usually sent from shelters and rescues located in warmer climates to adoption locations in these colder places. It frees up these places to be able to take in and helps these animals find loving homes.
@@butchieblock9118 my friend works for the NHSPCA. They're constantly overcrowded and overwhelmed with how many animals they have to take care of. They take in every single case somethone gives them, and unfortunately a lot of them get euthanized because they just do not have the resources.
Just two days ago my friend was telling me about another sweet cuddly dog that went through the behavioral tests. This dog passed like 7 out of 8 tests with flying colors. But failed 1 about it being aggressive towards smaller animals or something.
That was enough for it to get put on the euthanasia list just because they could not quickly adopt an animal out that failed even one test to justify the expense and room it would take up.
Wish we could send you some from the rural South in the US! It's hell for animals here.

Excellent, excellent work to all: Vet Ranch, Abandoned Pet Project and the wonderful adopter(s). These two could easily have ended their days in that shelter, alone, unloved and in pain. The kindness of everyone involved makes this a happy ending and I want to say Merry Christmas to all of you and many happy years together to these sweet girls in their new family!
I hate flea bites - I could not work in a vet clinic for that very reason. I get as itchy and inflamed as poor Sandy. You guys never seem bothered by them!! Happy they are staying together but Molly needs to eat separately so she doesn't steal her sister's food LOL

Thank you for what you do!!! I just adore animals over people. Except I deal with feral/homeless cats. I have 4 indoors & 2 outdoors that I care for, here in Quebec, Canada. It's cold outside & I have a shelter that must be shared by two. Doing my share & my best in my corner of the world. 🍁🇨🇦❤️

I've got cats....and was recently told by someone on IG that dentals are NOT needed on cats. They said they don't get them in the wild so they're not needed.

Always- always I watch your videos as you take such thorough, professional, expert care of all your patients- never thinking of doing the bare minimum when cost is such a consideration these days in health everywhere. That alone makes me emotional let alone your manner, and recording all the stages... I know the Puppettes are fine hearing their Dad describe them chasing their cattie to the other end of the house, and reverse, and being chased back again. Been following these two on Vet Ranch Roundup for a while now. Glad they have a happy ending and got a new forever home. Sandy looks so much better with her hair grown back in. As for Molly, I have a soft spot for Dachshunds, black-and-tans in particular, since my Mom used to have a DachPoo named Tammy.
However, it seems the cats think this is the Squeaky and Kiki show!

Question: When the dog's nails have grown out so much and you clip them don't you cut into the quick that's grown out too? Do you do anything special in these cases?
They have a powder that they can put on the nail to clot the quick
You can see that they took little slices when the dogs were being prepped for the dental. You can see when you are getting close to the quick from the look of the cut nail
You can see where the quick ends on any nail even an extra long one. It's usually looks like a pink line, so cut just past where it ends. If you're not sure what the quick looks like/where to trim , Google or ask your vet.

I found a senior little dog that was dumped. She was so sweet. I took her to the shelter knowing she was dumped. I sobbed the whole time. My dogs were seniors too and I couldn't imagine getting rid of them. I was grateful for every day I had with them.

I can kind of understand that grandpa wasn’t all there so he he didn’t really take care of the pups. I’m more upset about his family for not watching out for him and his pups. I wouldn’t be surprised if the family got him the dogs so he wouldn’t be lonely and then ignored him. All around it’s a sad situation.
How.do you know the family was anywhere nearby? They may have lived a thousand miles away, realized on a phone call the old guy had lost his marbles, come out to investigate and found a total mess.
A lot of the older generation seem to think flea treatment & nail clipping is a vet job & v expensive, so it gets left. I've spent a lot of time showing my elderly neighbours how to buy nail clippers online (£5) & get spot on treatment delivered at v low cost from online pet stores. (£4 a month). I've given them brushes of mine & shown them a 2 min brush is all is needed after shampooing once any matt's are cut off. Small long hair breeds take a lot of care & are prone to a lot of genetic ailments: buy your relative a short hair . Every walk I do in the park I see elderly people with terribly matted small breeds. Matt's are painful!
@@christinebutler7630 Or he was actually fairly mentally competent, and refused help. He could have had financial or mobility issues, but wanted to keep himself independent. Sometimes people just lose perspective and can't see how bad things have really gotten, and it takes a medical crisis to bring things to a point of intervention.

Those poor pups. Someone should have helped grandpa better with his pets. I'm sure they were loved but maybe he could not afford the bills? Sandy is an example why many senior citizens should not have dogs. This level of neglect is criminal abuse and I don't feel any grace for the old man and his family who allowed this level of abuse. Shame on that old man and his daughter and any other family member who was so heartless. Sick
