Why were so many Atari games so awful, with blue squares representing players or enemies, yet great games like this and Pitfall were so few and far between?
There are probably way to many factors that come into play. But i think that money, time, talent of specific developer(s) and the design choices are the biggest reasons as to why that is.

Good Atari effort. While not up the the legendary Pitfall! in quality, this is a good port with decent graphics and varied gameplay. 👍
