You couldn't be more wrong about Epsom salts. Epsom salts are not calcium they are magnesium sulfate. It helps the roots to absorb calcium, and yes it should go in the soil. Please correct this in a video. Many thanks Thomas Smart
Thomas I never said empsom salt is calcium I said people are told to use it for calcium, and 99% of the time its not required and is much better used as a folia feed
Fair enough with saying it's a common mistake but I think you should touch on why. I see this too much. There is a lot of RUclips vids saying about b.e.r and Epsom salt saying it's a fix for calcium. A lot of beginners including myself (a while ago) fall for this until buying it and reading the ingredients. Please try to reach out and explain that magnesium sulfate is to help take up calcium and for healthier roots not calcium itself. Many thanks Thomas Smart
Another great video Tony, so much information and very well explained techniques. Looking forward to seeing your garden and how well it does this year.
Great all in one video! The tomatoes I grow usually reach 8 ft to 10 ft before last frost and I've been stringing them up for the last 5 years and it works great. Tomato Cages are really only for determinant/bush tomatoes.
Very useful information. I'm experimenting with conditions growing in an unheated snow bound greenhouse. Of course, flower based vegetables like tomatoes aren't recommended (no pollinators and soil is too cold) but my eggplants in there are still putting out flowers so it can't be too cold in there yet even with snow on the ground. The greenhouse is double walled around to prevent air flow since stagnate air doesn't freeze things like blowing air (we see that in ice forming on top of water but not below where the same water is still cold, but not exposed to air movement which drops temps even further). But while dead air prevents freezing it also risks disease so I air out the greenhouse midday when it's warmest, and vent O2/water formation from plant chemistry, but also replenish ambient CO2. I'm also experimenting with overwintering tomato plants in there just to see what it takes to keep them alive in dead winter. It's easy enough to start seedlings in March if it doesn't work, but I'm determined to figure out the science of growing cold, especially in the face of possible - but hopefully unlikely - nuclear winter.
I used to help my Nan water her Tomatoes with Comfrey Tea. Some great tips here and some that I remember my Nan doing and jogging my memories thank you X
At our ranch just before first frost we pull the tomato plants and hang them upside down with heavy twine in the barn. As winter progresses we stop by the plants and pick the ripened red tomatoes off plants. We have eaten ripe tomatoes in January. The green tomatoes ripen on the upside down plants.
13° here yesterday and 28°c in the greenhouse. Almost took a chair out into it as it was warmer than my house! 😂 planting tomatoes this week and getting hanging baskets ready for strawberries. Love this time of year when the warmer weather starts coming so we can get out more and plant food. 😊
I use an electric toothbrush on the flower stems to vibrate the pollen into the air. Use the back of the toothbrush against the stem and the vibration sends all the pollen into the air.
Another world class video, well played sir too many withhold this information, people should grow their own everything. If you can, do. Stay growing bro YNWA
Hi Tony, thanks for yet another great info for the gardeners. New plot holders can learn a lot from these new videos that you are producing. Please keep up the great work and good luck.
I loved this video! It is the most comprehensive guide to planting tomatoes I have ever seen. You gave the reasoning behind why you plant & grow this way!! I’ve watched so many videos on gardening but none come close to the information you gave me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Love the video! But one small correction: Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. It can help in the rare case of a magnesium deficiency (but so will many organic fertilizers and amendments), but contains no calcium to remedy blossom end rot. As you say, though, regularity in watering is probably the best way to prevent blossom end rot.
I really love your videos. I am from Australia and now living in France and have had a really hard time adjusting to a new climate for growing vegies. Growing in France is totally opposite problem to the heat in Australia and you have helped me enormously. Thank you heaps.
Always Happy to help Deb. I know all about the challenges in Australia I grew there when I lived there for 3 years Sorry for the late reply. I have been unwell. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Masses of great info here Tony! Ooh I didn't know about using bicarb to sweeten tomatoes, but that probably makes them less suitable for canning without using a pressure canner - hmm, decisions decisions!

You Sir are a gentleman and a scholar 👏👏👏👏 I like what you said about blossom end rot....it may just be that the roots have died off due to irregular watering and therefore are not able to get the nutrients that they need....Epsom salt foliar spray is the way to go!!! Nice video, some very useful info, congrats on the 100k. In Australia they hand polinate a lot of their tomatoes with little vibrating wands. Can't see them for sale over here. Cheap electric toothbrush it is! All the best 👍🏻
Tony you are a hero! I only started gardening a little last season and this season I have gone all out and have some tomatoes! So I am trying to get all the information I need! I love your videos because they are super informative! Thanks a lot!
I grow indeterminate, and I use the lean and lower trellis method. I only allow the main stem and 1 sucker per plant so my plants end up really really tall. Last year the tallest was almost 17ft! I also pinch the suckers and immediatly drop them in cool water, the pot them up. The suckers become my backup plants bc blight is rampant here

I've taken a lot away with me from this video. Thanks again!
Oh ive never thought about molasses but it could attract ants
Nice video, some very useful info, congrats on the 100k. In Australia they hand polinate a lot of their tomatoes with little vibrating wands. Can't see them for sale over here.
Cheap electric toothbrush it is!
All the best 👍🏻
Yeah i too looked for those wands but there is always an alternative
Great idea!!!
Top video as always Tony.
Thanks 👍Cheers man :)

Tony you are a hero! I only started gardening a little last season and this season I have gone all out and have some tomatoes! So I am trying to get all the information I need! I love your videos because they are super informative! Thanks a lot!
Logan i am glad you're getting value from them. share them with your gardening friends
I grow indeterminate, and I use the lean and lower trellis method. I only allow the main stem and 1 sucker per plant so my plants end up really really tall. Last year the tallest was almost 17ft! I also pinch the suckers and immediatly drop them in cool water, the pot them up. The suckers become my backup plants bc blight is rampant here
Yes Tara the suckers make wicked backups
What a great video clear and concise My first view of your videos and You have answered nearly all of my questions in an easy and informed way .will be looking out for all your future videos cheers
Glad it was helpful Alan, Welcome to the channel :)
