    Just came across this video after watching your potato in buckets vids. I've been growing tomatoes for years now and this is an excellent video for anyone starting to grow them and wanting to get the best harvest. I do pretty much all of these and it really makes a difference. I'm doing 38 different varieties this year, most of which I've never grown before but for me that's the best part of growing heirloom tomatoes, you have so much choice and can create a really beautiful selection of tomatoes.

    Love your videos. I just started checking them out this spring and have found them to be very helpful. I am growing a few plants of small tomato called "sweet orange" here in Canada I get them from one of our local farmers market venders. I've been getting them from her for three years now, I don't even bother with the red varieties anymore because the sweet orange are amazing. Thanks for all the wonderful tips I have been able to used.

    great tips thanks Tony. Your tomato plants look like real cordons/ columns, with the fruits going close to the main stem. Even when I grow "cordon" varieties, I get something very bushy with the fruits all way out. I think if I had narrow columns I'd get more plants in. Could you make a video on pruning for tidy tomato plants? Thanks

    When you mentioned the fan heater to blow over the plants, I have used this for many years now, as a means of preventing blight and mildew. I use a timer and move the air throughout the night about 15 mins. every hour or so. I haven't lost a plant for the last 10 years. Good luck for the season!

    I use the bamboo sticks as well but I use cut strips of old cotton t-shirts to tie them to the sticks. The cotton doesn't damage the stalks of the plant. I live in a windy area and hard ties wear bad places on the stalks.

    Very useful video Tony, thanks very much. The only feedback/query I have is regarding your comments on suckers (side shoots) - you said that you must remove them and that they bear no fruit - I think that is incorrect; the need for removing them is dependent on whether or not they are indeterminate or determinate varieties. Also, they absolutely WILL produce fruit; if left alone, a sucker will grow into another ‘main stem’, which of course can become unmanageable and a burden on nutrients if you allow too many to grow. But they definitely do produce fruits - I always propergate my suckers (some, not all) in water and then plant into soil at different stages so that I have a continuous crop throughout the entirety of the season to as late as possible as suckers will grow into full plants themselves if propagated and planted.

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  4 года назад +1

      Yes they will bare fruit. What I meant was that with short season its not viable to grow them out too and get ripened fruitSorry for the late reply

      The San marzanos are a small paste tomato, similar to a Roma, but fleshier. They make a great Italian sauce with onion and basil. The Cherokee purple are large and great to slice for sandwiches as they have a deep almost smoky flavor. They’re both great producers too, giving me lots of harvest here in Louisville in the states.

    Suckers do produce flowers and fruit Tony. I don't prune mine (indeterminate tomatoes). I let them grow as they want, just support the branches, but they all bare fruit. Pruning the suckers does make a prettier and cleaner plant than just letting them grow. :-)

    Napoli paste, San Marzano, Gold Sun cherry, constoluto Florentino. I used to grow Romas for sauces but now prefer the napoli. And I always grew the purple cherokees but they ripened too fast on me and the mice got most of them. I usually also grow Indigo Rose but forgot to start them this year. For watering, I'll be adding 2 ft lengths of pvc piping into the soil as you do your soda bottles.
    Re fish parts. I always add some into the soil around my peach trees which love them. My sons used to catch fish for me just so we'd keep our peach trees healthy and producing well. Never had a cat problem.

    your right tony , there is nothing like home grown tomatoes, my dad died 2 years ago and iv,e had to rely on on shop bought tomatoes since then , truly awful things , no taste , , no smell, trying my 1st ones this year , soo looking forward to my first crop later this year , they have their 1st trusses now at the end of april and not sure if i should leave them as they are or start to remove leaves , things are happening quite quickly at the moment

    Hi Tony, great video! I have a question re potting on. I thought that the young plants were kept in small (3") pots to deliberately cause them to go pot bound and "force " the first truss and thereafter reproductive growth rather than vegetative. I have grown tomatoes since I was kid, every year now for nearly fifty years but it is always a learning process. This year I have eleven different plants in the greenhouse: Banana Legs, Purple Cherry, Red Pear, Sweet Casady, Tamina, Cour de Bue, Principe Borghese, Scatalone, Tigrella, St Pierre and Valencia!!

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  5 лет назад

      Great varieties John. Lets look at it slightly different to how you are currently, Tomatoes are tall plants, anything that gets big and puts out a lot of weight of fruit needs a good grounding. I do understand the point your making but if you were 6ft and i jammed your feet into size 1 shoes and made you shoe bound to you think your feet would support your body? Why people want to rush fruiting is beyond me, there is no need for it we have a long enough season to produce 6 and 7 trusses properly and ensure they are all ripe at the end of the season. Cramming roots is not good for any plant like anything in life good foundations are important or the house will come tumbling down. Same with plants mate

      @@simplifygardening Think I'll go with that Tony next year! Related to it, do you agree with waiting till the first flower truss opens before planting out? It is always annoying that following this and the 3" pot rule the plants are always quite tatty when planted out after being so healthy earlier.

    I am 70 and have been growing tomatoes for years with info gleaned from Dr Hessayon's and many other's books and some very contradictory seed packet advice. I wish I had found your RUclips tips much earlier as my previous results were often disastrous. The only down side to following your tips is that I now have a greenhouse full of tomatoes, in various stages of growth and my conservatory looks like Kew Gardens. I am daily delivering my excess to my neighbours. I am now in the process of viewing all your other veggie posts...

    Sept. 2021 - Tony, excellent film. Great advice. I have used Moneymaker Seeds this year. I've had an excellent harvest, ranging from small to really big. They were very slow to ripen, only doing so with the help of the late September sunshine. With your help I will do better next year.

    As of last year my new favorite cherry tomato is Chocolate Sprinkles and the tomatoes I grow for slicing and canning are Early Girl. I live in NE Nevada at 5997 ft altitude. Our growing season is very short. This year we will do a greenhouse that will allow us at least another two weeks before and after our growing season for heat loving plants. It will have to have a removable roof because temperatures can get well over 100 degrees F in the months of July and August. On the other side of nature we can actually get a killing frost in August. Early Girl takes only 50 days but is indeterminate so keeps on fruiting. With the greenhouse perhaps we can get some heirlooms to actually produce enough fruit to make them worth the expense of buying the plants.

    I string my tomato plants up. I use special clips though to attach to the stem same as in professional growing tunnels. I find this work well and is quick and easy no more need for winding also no root disturbance when planting in. Varieties I grow are Black Russian, black cherry, tiggerella, Alicante, moneymaker, marmande, idll, yellow cherry, super marmande and others I can’t think of off the top of my head. Cheers 🍻
