  • Courtney compares the decision-making of two different pilots, both of whom lost an engine during flight, and both having entirely different outcomes.

The second aircraft is a Raj Hamsa X,Air. The kit is made in India. Probably the most popular microlight in Ireland.

OK..the microlight on the left is a XAIR..i used to own one and is a very forgiven aircraft too, unfortunately, pilot error and misjudgment are very common among us, special if you decide to fly over a dense forest or unfamiliar ground without checking the map of your destination, but most of all the health of the engine.. i had a friend who had a crash with this type of aircraft and his femur went through the pod...only because he couldn't bother to change the plugs, therefore, he had an engine failure..

Excellent illustration and advice, as usual!

It sounded like the Flightstar had an uncommanded RPM drop moments before the seizure. I’ve had two occasions where that happened. A quick reduction in throttle was enough to save the engine before it seized and bought me enough time to pick a better landing site. (Both 'almost seizures' were caused by a 'good deal' on some dodgy oil I bought.)

I think there's a strong correlation between crashing and stupid.

Even Bentleys and Lambos break down, you have to remember that in aviation. That pilot from the movie who flies low over the trees should consider a twin-engine plane. Low flying is attractive, but dangerous in a single-engine plane.

There are safe sites to fly "low and slow" but this pilot choose a hostile site.

If it was just trees I think the guy would be ok with a few scratches. But this last crash head on terrain is what might have made it worse 1:31

A fall from 60 feet is not something one easily walks away from.
