I loved going here growing up, it always had a retro vibe and it was a stones throw to my house. I remember after the riots in the early 90's the Army National Guard and federal troops were called in and protected the entire mall area, from the sears and all surrounding shops. All our going back to school clothes were bought at the sears, and there is a small park behind that parking lot which is now used as a shanty town by the homeless. So heartbreaking. Nothing but great memories from this place.
Grew up around the corner from here. In the 60s and 70s it was a great place with everything a family needed right there. Food, clothes, appliances, major stores and little shops. Also fun with record stores, a movie theater, ice skating (laurel plaza), pet store, you name it. A suburban nirvana. Great memories. Could not have imagined this is what it would become. So sad.
Wow! I remember shopping in that area when I was a kid. It was such a busy place. I never imagined it would become this decades later. Thanks for posting, you've got a great channel.
Anyone remember VALLEY PLAZA park? Before, during and after the 170 freeway went through, it was our GOTO place. Many times watched them (and participated) in GROOVY and WHERE THE ACTION IS with Dick Clark (never actually saw him) , and PAUL REVERE AND THE RAIDERS, MARK LINDSAY, ROY HEAD, NANCY SINATRA, and other pop idols of the time. Never forget the kids things they set up like the 15 person pyramid (what fun), the water chases ... GREAT KID stuff ... a bygone ear gone bye.
I was born and raised in LA. I lived my whole life of 36 years in the valley. I know all those places since the 80s. In 2010 I went to a clinic in one of those offices. The old looking restaurant, yes it was functioning at one time and I ate there after going to Golds Gym that was on the left side. The baby blue building next to golds gym was a mom and pop nutrition store. That white building use to be full with workers. Of course, you can't forget Sizzler. We ate there all the time also. Sad sad. I miss the valley but we had to move.
You have a relevant and engaging perspective. The videos are well paced, and the content is interesting. Think about the commerce and lives that those buildings participated in being a part of. I can remember as a kid, and the "strip" malls and how stores like Sprouse rites, Revco, Ben Franklin, along with many local offerings were the place go for necessities and to spend the money that always was burning a hole in my pocket. Keep up the great work. Marion.
Once a vibrant place with a Van De Kamps on the corner of SYLVAN and LAUREL CANYON, a locksmith shop across the street, a camera shop near VICTORY, the old Los Angeles Federal Savings, an iconic building with the two tall arches -and my GROWING UP place, the USS BRYCE CANYON DVISION of the NAVY LEAGUE SEA CADETS. Sponsored by the Navy League, this was the US Navy's answer to the BOY SCOUTS of AMERICA. We would drill there, learn rope knots, practice safety missions, march, hold civic events, and where the Boy Scouts would go up to the mountains around So. Cal, we would go to Long Beach, Port Hueneme, or San Diego and board a Destroyer Escort or other warship and cruise up and down the coast for three days. SEMPER FORTIS By the way, the newer abandoned office building was where the facility once stood. A bygone era gone by.
Wow. I remember the Valley Plaza strip mall in North Hollywood. So freaky to see it abandoned today. The mid-century aesthetics of both locations, stunning. It's so weird the county isn't developing it. What's up with that?
How sad that area may be permanently ruined now the homeless have burnt that whole area to a crisp. Great video, I remember when this building had active security guards patrolling it.
God I know that mall well, the restaurant used to be "the Lamplighter", and the theaters are where I saw Grease the movie like 12 times when I was a teen, I can't believe this is all still just sitting there but if it was redeveloped it wld probably be wealthy condos or apt's anyway so who cares, Where are the homeless people at the shopping center? Do they have a guard on site? That office building is amazing, what a find. Can't believe it's also sitting there with the power on, again no homeless and it's open?
Very heartbreaking me and my mother (rip) used to love that sizzler that’s an abandoned homeless house now the trend of abandoned buildings there sheesh got me thinking what’s next the movie theater
There was a giant call centre in there still up to a few years ago. But they were the only ones in the whole bld. The rest of it was empty. I guess they were getting cheap ass rent. Now that whole park is a homeless village
Good stuff man! Check out Encino Courtyard in... well... Encino. 17401 Ventura Blvd. It's got a couple of businesses keeping it afloat for now, but the place just feels empty anyway. The whole thing is slowly dying for sure. Some scenes from The 40-Year-Old Virgin were filmed there so you can check that out as well to see some clips of what it looked like in 2005. Cheers!

I remember Sears also. In the back that's where they filmed Reno 911. All over the valley.

I grew up in that area. Its like a homeless encampment now in a park we all use to hang out on when the mall was down the street and ice rink
This is so very sad. Spent a good portion of my life working at 12200 Sylvan St. The area use to be a thriving place.

As the new generation, i have always seen the place like this. I never knew it was thriving like people describe it!

Ahh, before there was a theater there, we were there. I believe it was a small sundry store before the theater, like a RITE AID type of store.
@@hgr4255 I remember Pic'n'Save being there before the theater; Were you before that?
Very heartbreaking me and my mother (rip) used to love that sizzler that’s an abandoned homeless house now the trend of abandoned buildings there sheesh got me thinking what’s next the movie theater
I always wanted to go to those office builind behind the plaza they looked cool but eerie cause they were separate

Thanx to politicians,,,taxes,, etc,,,,brutal
I think they use it as a movie set now. I know they filmed captain marvel there
wow.
I forget.....what was the name of the ice cream parlor accross from the movie theater?
Nice...I don't see a whole lot of bandos here in socal.
Are you kidding me? Abandon buildings and vacancies are all around S. Cal. Get your head out of your cell phone.
nice!!
Real life backrooms
There alot of homeless there next to freeway and the park now
North Hollywood is ghetto as fuck. I won't step foot in that area. It's becoming as bad as manchester in LA.
