      All these talk of the English East India Company conquering 'India' and exploiting it for business gain can be low-class academic nonsense. I can recommend to two books for another perspective that might give some startling revelations.
      1. Malabar Manual by William Logan - along with a Commentary by VED from VICTORIA INSTITUTIONS
      2. An Impressionistic History of the South Asian Subcontinent
      both can be downloaded from archiveOrg and download/read from academiaEdu.
      I have read both and can mention that the information contained in these two book are fabulous.

    It angers me immensely to hear that 'WE' British were exploiting India for 'OUR' benefit. My ancestors were coal miners in the lands of the Earls of Dalhousie under bonded labour, where children as young as 8 went into his coalmines in what was nothing other than slave labour. Working for the same Earls of Dalhousie who were Governors of the HEIC in India. As i live only 1 mile from the grand castle which was funded by the blood and sweat of my ancestors and of the Indians why should i feel i have to apologise what Britain did to India - Let those who raped the wealth of India apologise and please stop using the word 'WE'. A case of 2 colliers who fled the hardships of the Lothian coalfields were arrested in Glasgow by the militia and charged for the crime of 'stealing themselves from their employers'. This also needs to be taught in schools as well as what the 'privileged' classes did in the Empire.

    • @AshYoung7
      @AshYoung7 4 года назад +4

      I don’t think anyone is asking you to apologise - this may be missing the point. It is to recognise that the present wealth of this country, our collective ability to live a relatively privileged life, was built on a system of global exploitation. If we understood this as a population we would have entirely different outcomes in terms of our politics, and views on race. There would be less talk of who does and who doesn’t belong here due to an understanding that the ‘resource’ of the country that many believe to have a undisputed right to due to their native ancestry, was actually built on the plunder and pillage of nations and people’s around the world. Yes your ancestors may have been exploited, and mine may have been relatively wealthy despite living in a colonial country, but today only one of us is Universally viewed as having a right to this nations resource. Only one of us is likely to face discrimination at every level of our society, and only one of us is excluded from the vision of what it is to be ‘really British’ . Honestly, I think you are right to point out the parallels between the two experiences so thank you. perhaps it’s the point that history acknowledges the challenges your ancestors faced, while it ignores and erases the experiences expressed here. Without making presumptions, the majority of Britain’s should support movements like Black lives matter, racial equality, and the uplift of marginalised peoples across races. Instead of thinking ‘what about the white working class’ why isn’t the discussion framed that the majority of non white britiains are working class, or have working class roots so why aren’t we all collaborating to speak truth to the power you rightly call out.

      I understand your anger. However, I feel your comment is slightly off the mark. In addition to what AshYoung has said, perhaps I can add a personal Indian perspective to it.
      We understand that the race to the top by European rulers, made it necessary to exploit the world's natural resources. After all, Europe is the poorest continent in the world - in terms of natural resources. That doesn't makethe exploitation right. India (by consesus) had 23% percent of the world's GDP before the EIC arrived - it has 2% when they left. The fact that Britain today has unemployment support, a high GDP per capita and India doesn't, would perhaps be the other way around - if it weren't for the Empire.
      By extension, I wouldn't be here, if you weren't there.
      Whether your ancestors were exploited or not, the fact that you have the leisure to voice your opinions on RUclips, and the vast majority of Indians won't even comphrehend this topic (they're trying to survive), demonstrates that you have benefitted from the EIC and its shenanigans.
      And if by chance, people think this "Raj" mentality is over - it isn't. Not that things like Knighthood matter - but for a moment, let's pretend it does. Rabrindranath Tagore (the last Indian to be knighted) returned the knighthood, after the Amritsar Massacare in the 1910s. There have been no subsequent knighthoods. We have a Sir Andrew Strauss and no Sir Sunil Gavaskar? How ridiculous can the world get?!!
      If I was to extend your logic, the Amritsar massacre was not Dyer's fault. The troops who fired were Indian.
      History is written by the victors. Once the wrongs are righted on a global level, the internal minutiae can, and will be, dealt with. An official apology and a token amount of £1 per year (as suggested by Tharoor in his Oxford Union address) will suffice. I don't think that's asking for much.
      But then I feel America should apologise to Japan for the atomic bombs. Who's going to open that can of worms?

    It's not complex, the fact remains India was never a country, it's the British who Moulded India into a nation.
    The British company conquered the Region of India, not a country. That's why they were able to take over step by step, with the support of different groups. Because each group was different, not Indian, but with their own distinct identity.
    Please do not confuse the issues. You study history so stop presenting India as a historical country, because it's a fat faced lie.

      @MacMacPherson 4 года назад +12

      Your question stunned me. It beggars belief. Did you listen to any of the video? The EIC massively pillaged a whole country, continually, and to do so had to build the necessary infrastructure in order to carry it out. You want to know when the cost of the pillaging infrastructure is returned? Are you serious? Or just seriously cretinous? That's akin to some uncooth moron jumping in an uber-taxi to drive to break into a dignified woman's house, beat her, eat her food, steal her belongings, rape her and then ask her when she will return the cost of the uber-taxi ride!

    • @TheToledoTrumpton
      @TheToledoTrumpton 4 года назад +5

      @@transvestosaurus878 I'm not rewriting History. Are you saying that the British made no investment in India?
      I made no claims or assumptions that the EIC were a good Corporation. Nor do I think that the EIC were the primary investors in India. The British Government/people invested far more into India than they ever got back.
      Even just in terms of the cost of winning the war against Mysore/Maratha when they arrived. Throughout British rule the tax base of India was very low. Income from India was almost all trade taxes on goods imported and profits.
      The Indian people paid for very little. Not schools, roads, policing, railroads, defense anything.
      I'm not saying that British rule was a picnic, but simply ignoring any of the trillions of dollars of investment in India is rewriting history.
      I know it isn't fashionable to say anything good about colonialism, but India might well have become Muslim and more like Iraq and Iran today if the British hadn't got involved. It very likely would have been divided and the two sides still fighting today, if the India/Pakistan relationship is anything to go by.

    • @usasichowdhury2688
      @usasichowdhury2688 4 года назад +3

      I hope that you have a clear idea about the fact why India and Pakistan were made. And you have the knowledge of the population in the each part of the country where the British did their businesses and made their profits. I think it's better to do your smart calculations after that. But if you value a few infrastructures more than lives, please don't even try. We were always open about a few open ideas. Now, after years of looting(so called "The business of British Empires"),we act like slaves. If it was such a beautiful relationship, you might have think like a business partner, not try to calculate profits after almost 75 years or better we might not had to fight for freedom. Now India has become about Hindu and Muslims. But if you open the history book, you will find where India used to stand because of which the foreigners were able to make such molding. And you will find from where such conservation for culture becomes important for Hindus. If you are talking as an outsider, at least try to look the full picture in space and time. And if you're trying to find sanity of the profitable business, please do yoga or some physical exercises and calm yourself.

    So some one criticises him on internet and he is blaming RSS and Modi. He lives in India and forms his opinion based on what he reads in the blogs. Does he ever get out of comfort of his home and find out what is happening in the real world. Who is responsible for loss of pluralism real or imagined ? Does he not as a historian sense that there many forces operating in in present day India particularly the Christian , Muslim and Communist variety to break India . If Hindus voice their concern and protest then they are blamed for supporting RSS. Does he not admit that it is Hinduism with its respect for other religions that is responsible for pluralism in India? He seems to lose his objectivity whenever it comes to Muslims and Muslim rulers. It is fear of losing this tolerant Hinduness or Hindutva that most Hindus fear in this country. Bringing Nazism in to this debate is out of all proportions and is only the reflection of his European mindset.
