When my dad was a kid there was a guy in his neighborhood that would sell pigeons to the kids as pets. but as soon as the kid got his new pet bird out of the cage, they'd fly back to their owner, who'd proceed to sell the same bird to other kids.

I'm afraid that distinction goes to the dogs that served in Vietnam. Don't Google it if you are a dog lover. It's heartbreaking beyond words. Dogs like German Shepherds are believe to have saved more military lives in combat (per use) that any other single military advancement. In WWII they literally returned home to parades. Vietnam was an entirely different story.

My favourite thing about pigeons: they did a study in Toronto that discovered that pigeons always divide themselves among food sources so that each pigeon gets about the same amount of food. So if you start feeding pigeons at a park everyday, as you increase the amount of food you put down, you will only attract more pigeons rather than feed those initial pigeons more. They have a mysterious way of communicating with each other to equitably divide the food throughout the entire city among the thousands of themselves. It’s a beautiful case of solidarity. If only humans were so progressive...

Doesitmatter? Kinda hard for pigeons to hover or lift anyone out of the ocean, using their own wings. Might as well point out that humans can swim, so we don't need the helicopter either.

    • @alliemaricru1551
      @alliemaricru1551 7 лет назад +15

Joshua Pearce you're missing the point that pigeons are only used to find people, not save them... obviously this has benifits. For example, maybe attach a button to the pigeon to press once they see a human which alerts the helicopter to the coordinates where they can come to rescue them. There are many feasible applications they can be used for.

The reason I say this is because people mostly feed them bread which can clog up their system and make it hard to lay eggs (called "egg bound") or even poop. It's happened to a few of my chickens cause our neighbors would give us bread. When we figured out what was causing it, we told them to stop giving our chickens bread. And they're fine now.

1:41 THAT IS NOT, the story of Cher Ami, Dear friend in french.
    October 4, 1918 WW1
! ! ! . . Lost American Battalion 77th Infantry Division, known as "The Liberty Division", Entrenched on all Sides by German troops trained to shoot the only communications left, Pigeons. 200 Men remain out of the 500 in just several days and all other Pigeons have been killed. With defenses failing the only commander Major Whittlesey fits the last bird with a message, it was Cher Ami. He sets out over the battle field. Germans See the bird rising from the brush and begin to fire. He is shot through the CHEST, Blinded in One eye and his Leg hanging on by one tendon. The troops see this as their defeat as all hope is lost, but Cher Ami kept going. He flew through more bullets then anything in history and flew 25 miles in 25 minutes. Finally he reached American headquarters and saved 194 men!!!!! He lived to tell the tail despite having a quarter sized whole in his chest from the bullet. Fitted with a Peg leg and awarded the highest metal of Honor for an animal Cher Ami remains a Legend to this day. 100% True, not kidding.

I had a pigeon as a pet when I was a kid, and the best pet I ever had. my pigeon would pet me back. she was free to fly anywhere, which made for a few surprise visits to my school 😋. also, extremely loyal and only let me and my grand father even get near her.

When I was kid I caught one white pigeon (Dove) by hand and kept it in a cage at my home.
My father saw it and freed the pigeon. I was disappointed with my dad then.
However today I am in my late twenties and I will do the same if my son does it.
Birds are born to fly not to be kept in cage for our entertainment. 🕊

I was about 10 years old when I went to Italy with my family. We were just walking around when I found a *huge* pack of birds just seemingly chilling on the floor. As a ten year old would, I sprinted straight into the middle of the pack. I could hear a faint "no, don't..." By my mum behind me but it was too late; all of the birds mesmerisingly flew in canonic symmetry. It was very enjoyable untill I look left and see an angry, tall man with a long black coat just feeding the pigeons look at me with disgust. It was at that moment I realised I just ran straight through where he was feeding the pigeons. I know the birds will eventually go back but first, it was a huge pack and secondly, I just feel terribly sorry for that guy who was probably there all morning 😅

Thanks for your responses. I live in a suburb of Lisbon, Portugal, called Cascais. I live in the center near a park and sort of 10 years ago I got myself involved into pigeons. It all started when a group of older ladies asked me for help and explained me how pigeons were being poisoned. By then I had noteced that it was usual to see sick birds in the park by I never knew they were being poisoned and painfully killed on purpose. It shocked me. The ladies were also facing a group of nearby restaurants owners and other people who simply hated them for no clear reason. Once they were provoking the ladies I went there too talk to them and they told me how pigeons were dirty and nasty fliying rats spreading diesieses and how pigeons were "destroying everything" (wow?!). When I asked them to point me out one exemple of something they alegedly destroyed they couldnt say nothing. I nursed one sick baby pigeon that seems to have fallen too early from the nest because he was left alone after his parents were poisoned, and he was having simptoms as well. In the meantime I started paying full atention to what was really happening to those poor inocent birds and I couldnt believe it. We made enough fuss for the guys to stop using poison, hopwever many were affected and were zombies. I noteced how young generations avoided them and specially girls would even scream or make ugly faces towards them as if they were disgusting. It was really a case of fashion, somehow it became fashion to hate them. I was shocked, poor birds, I noteced how in between all living creatures, pigeons are ammong the very few nicest ones, the ones that dont hunt, hurt or do any bad to other creatures. They just live in peace, how unfair was that treatment they were getting. My pigeon got better, became a younster, however he got small pocks and died. He was the first one, but ever since him, I nursed and rescued around 30. Some were babies fallen from the nest too soon, some were injured, some were sick, some had been hit by a car,... it became impossible to me to see a care needing pigeon and not take him with me and save him. Some I tried hard but died, however many I reliesed sucessfully. Some of them got better but for diverse reasons ended unabled to fly, and those are the ones that ended up living with me for life. I live in an apartment and at one point I had 12 simultaneously. Now I have 4. Each one has his own unique personality. They did made my house look like a mess, but with time I menaged to impose some discipline to them. My friends know I like pigeons and I rescued some, but only my girlfriend knows the extension of my involvment with them. People dont understand it. Once I tried to talk more to them about it, one of them said "Oh but it is just pigeons bah! Not like if you are saving some endangeroused species or something." I gave it up after that, most people are stupid. But besides rescuing them and nursing them home in private, I also take every chance when I am out in the park or somewhere to play and treat well pigeons and I sort of "teach" children how cool they are and how cool is to like them and treat them right. I get sort of good results cause I dont look old. How did you had 40 pairs of them Astroners, were you having them for races? Sorry for my bad English and typping mistakes

I know, right? I love pigeons as well, and they're really funny to watch. Plus they're so chubby that they have to flap their wings so hard that they slap together. At least that's what I like to imagine that really loud flapping sound you hear when pigeons fly and not other birds is, haha. Apparently they actually do it to scare away predators, but my chubby pigeon mental image is the one I prefer.

    Wrap your brain around that.
And entering the loft is like switching your stress se d life to instant euphoric calm as they stare at you so calming.
