    This is my first hands-on video about the Arturia Keylab Essential 88 MK3 keyboard. The Arturia Keylab Essential 88 MK3 is a full size, budget keyboard that Arturia makes. I discuss the features, the build quality, the key and pad feel, the new screen, DAW compatibility and demo all the features including sound demos with Arturia's Analog Lab. The Arturia Keylab Essential 88 MK3 has lots of NEW features including an arpeggiator, chords, drum pads, encoder knobs, faders, and more. But this keyboard may be missing a few small features. Watch and find out!

    Great information with the pros and cons. Greatly appreciated! Will stick with my Keylab MkII for now, but if/when that gets an update, I'll be eager to see if they include that screen.
    I don't mind the clickies; they help my old ears know whether I actually pressed them or not. 🤣

    I like the Keylab Essentials because they are lightweight, compact, and look smart. I think this keyboard is a good option for those with limited space as its easy to move and stack on its side when not in use, its also good for transport to live shows or to a different studio.

I just need to have about 6 months of free time to learn all the features of each :D Great review, and keep up the great work Sanjay, always a pleasure to watch you! Big heart to Dharti!! Let's just hope, this year, they drop a KeyLab (not essential to roll a better screen too) MK3. Poly AT would be a must, imo. Sadly, I feel Arturia (for controllers), is chasing Native Instruments, while Novation is chasing Arturia... at least in a timeline. And - for me, the NI just doesn't fit the bill. A controller needs to, well, control, well - DAW, plugins and not just NKS. There is so much wasted real estate on a Kontrol MK3.

    • @ericsutherlandmusic1664
      @ericsutherlandmusic1664 Месяц назад +1

      Absolutely: I just returned a Native Instruments Komplete S88 because it was so buggy. They spent their budget on marketing and not actual software integration or UX. Total waste of time in the end. Probably going to go for a simple 88 key MIDI controller in the end with at least 16 controls.

    • @roofkorean6948

      It would be cool if they released an 'aftertouch version' later on for a slight extra cost.
      I got an LX49 a while back for 190 bucks that has aftertouch, but it's not the best control surface because it doesn't have drum pads, sliders, etc. and it doesn't come with a ton of software like the 88mk3. From what I can tell, unless you wanted to spend 1000 on a mkii or something comparable (or wait to see what Arturia comes out with next), then this 88mk3 seems like one of the best deals right now. If you're getting you're first midi keyboard/control surface, then I'd recommend it. Then if you really need aftertouch, just get a separate keyboard for that later. Still might come out to less than 1000. Like I said, mine was just under 200, then if you get the 88mk3 for 400, you're looking at 600 in total. I personally prefer that route than to spend 1000 on one do-it-all keyboard. Sure, it's nice having all the features right there in one keyboard, but I'm on a budget. I also have a secondary recording location so having a second smaller keyboard (LX49) to bring back and forth is easier, then I just leave the 88mk3 at home where I utilize it the most.

    Really hoping they keep a 4 x 4 pad controller on the new Keylab 88 mk3... After learning finger drumming via the Quest for groove method.. a 4 x 4 system works brilliantly versus the common strips of pads like on many of the other midi keyboards.

    I actually don’t understand why the display is the biggest feature on this keyboard 99% of all people use it in front of a giant display called monitor 😂 poly aftertouch would have been nice

    • @Anarkosm
      @Anarkosm 4 месяца назад +3

      Exactly *THIS* point. I essentially commented on the very same thing. Well, not *poly* aftertouch, necessarily (that's still a luxury/flagship-tier capability), but for there to not be *any* aftertouch capability whatsoever on this latest "MKIII" release - that's bordering on an industry embarrassment for Arturia to leave out.

      @towerrunner4675
      An irrelevant red herring.
      The point is that aftertouch is quickly becoming a music industry-wide standard for all keyboard controllers. It's no longer a keyboard feature "exception" or "luxury" like it was two to three decades ago, but now phasing in to becoming one of the most vital and essential functionalities in one's production workflow to make full use of the latest generation of software-based virtual instrument libraries, via MIDI control. It's now 2024, not early 2000's. There is no longer an excuse for a *market-leading* keyboard MIDI controller manufacturer to leave out basic aftertouch as a standard in their latest "MKIII" releases. Even their "Essentials" model line-up. It's like a car manufacturer leaving out antilock breaks in 2024, not 1987.
      (Heck, I have a worn-out, dusty, 12-year old lowly 49-key MIDI controller, and even *it* has aftertouch built-in as basic functionality. For all this MIDI controller's otherwise "dated" status.)

    @tankstellenberni 2 месяца назад

    Hi, one question i think you are best suited for this since you are a Pianist. Did you feel a difference in the response of the dynamic between the dark and the white keys?
    Why i ask that? You mentioned the Nektar LX 88+. I have that one and didn't realized at the beginning how hugely different the black keys respond compared to the white ones. With time i got more and more disappointed with the dynamic. I even tried to edit one of the midi-plugins that Reaper provides - my DAW-of choice at the moment. Which manipulate the velocity of the midi notes. But without success.
    So the last time i tried to play one of the piano pieces i slightly smashed the keyboard back under the table, because it makes me a little bit aggressive to hear these unleveled loud black keys. And didnt played since then.
    Now you could say: "How do i know that i am not just bad at playing?" Well. I had access to a Grand Piano at my parents, and from there i know that my playing can/and most of the time will fulfill me with joy and happiness after the end of a song - instead of anger after the first few measures.
    So since you are a pianist, i guess you would have realized a behavior like this on this arturia keylab essential 88 mk3. And maybe you even know what I am talking about in case that you also tried the Nektar LX 88+ once.
    I am afraid of just ordering another one, without knowing that it will be better, and would trust your answer in case that you read until here =D

    Very good overview of this controller, but I think you mentioned that the 61-key-version mk3 (with aftertouch) is coming soon and that’s the one I‘ve been waiting for a long time. So only aftertouch makes it a complete controller. The Akai MPC is too old already to be purchased. I‘d rather buy a 73 or 76 version of a controller, but those are very rare, and 88 controller doesn‘t fit into my keyboard drawer. Somehow the Korg 61 controller or NI 61 have too few or no knobs and faders, no drum pads, etc., so that I won’t buy the for that prize! Thanks for this video! 👍🏻🙏🏻

    Hi..i have questions about this.
    1.I am a (frustrated) pianist. I have only had up to grqde 1 lessons because i had to stop due to financial constrainst in 2001. Byt i can also play by ear and somehow developed some intermwdiate to advanced skills and i read piwces that are above my level like some of beethoven and also play some richard clayderman. You said that this is not a weighted 88 keys but rather semi weighted (but still has some heaviness to it). So is this keyboard a major upgrade from my 62ky semi weighted korg synth? Or the key weight is kinda similar? I do really :ant an 88 key. Almost tempted to get those cheap folding pianos. Lol
    2.i dont really know wht aftertiuch is. But as a cover musician gor youtube who does some piano versions of songs, can i achieve dynamics with this on my piano vst of choice?

    Really hoping to see an updated Keylab series, hopefully with a little bigger screen than the essential series, something like half way to the NI screens without making it too expensive, but rather use the money on a decent poly AT keybed for just the 49/61 synth models, as I don't see the point at all in Poly AT with a Hammer action keybed. It's only a distraction if you want to have a great feeling Piano Keybed. However there is currently no 76 key controllers available which would be nice for those that want some more keys but arent that confident with a fully weighted Piano keybed. I could propably do with even a 49 key Keylab with Poly AT if it comes at the right price .. *crosses fingers* as it seems it's starting to look like Poly AT is getting more and more mementum from different brands.

    and I don't like them
    the weight is nice

    its only a 1/4 inch throw on the keys!!
    Tell us plz what kb's have a deeper throw with heavy keys
    not "grand piano" but "poorly maintained upright with half inch throw on the keys from missing felt"
    I have as my main kb right now, after trying and selling many
    an MPK261 with big heavy synth keys
    I want to get a novation SL49, but I am obssessed with heavy fat keys that go down farther and I can reef on them like a madman while I rock out
    can you hook us up with some choices in this?
    I am even lookin at an mpk225 for portable because the lovely novation mini ableton integration was not enough to make me overlook the dinky light keys

    I have the 49 key. Stupid cheap.
    Still looking for the midi controller that will bring back the OLED screen per knob layout. MPC X has one of the best layouts for hands on instant access to editing tools. Yamaha Montage (latest versions) have the separate screen over the knobs and sliders for real time feedback and labeling of function. NI has had this for some time, but sort of a cheat by just taking up space on the existing LED screens. Korg now has joined the game. Still, the only real option for dedicated OLED labeling per knob is MPC X. We have the bargains, but where are the top of the line options
    Where I'm lost and frustrated with all these companies, where's the PDF with template to create paper overlays for our controller labels? :) Heck, even the $250 Sonicware line includes a template for the knob controls in FM mode.

    I have so many questions
    (the video is good though! :D I mean… in general. Whats the difference between an e-piano and a MIDI one? What do 90% of the upper buttons do xD or; do they sell a key-cover, for anti-dust? c:)

    • @patchbaycowboy
      @patchbaycowboy 4 дня назад

      Midi is just for controlling instruments, often virtual ones (vst, au, etc) or desktop synths/anything with midi in. An e-piano would be a wurlitzer although im guessing you mean a workstation like phantom or just a usual keyboard like a casio. Those have sounds onboard, this does not.

    I guess midi 2.0, MPC and polyphonic aftertouch don’t come with a budget keyboard? I think midi 2.0 is going to make all the current, popular, midi controller keyboards obsolete very quickly - unless it can be included in future firmware updates.

The only thing i have is a windows laptop. What is the best reliable keyboard at my price range and would i need like audio interface or other things for my setup? Thank you.

    If it's not meant to be piano weight keys, why not to build 73/76 keys then? I don't understand it..

    I bought the 49 key version and couldn't stand the mushy key feeling. Extremely budget. On the other hand the launchkey has much better keys. But I understand the 88 key version of the keylab has a better keyboard because it has to be more closer to a piano. I would be very interested to see the Mk3 versions of their expensive line.

    I would have much rather had aftertouch included as a standard capability in this latest "MKIII" update than "a bigger, more elaborate screen", because we keyboard controller warriors already integrate computer monitors with DAW and/or virtual instrument control, anyway. Thus, a bigger screen is a redundancy, compared to the growing essential need for aftertouch in all MIDI controllers.
    Talk about a missed opportunity to address the *top* functionality priorities, as of *2024* (not the early 2000's.)
    Large, fully-featured keyboard screens only become top priorities on stand-alone workstation keyboards with their own internal file banks and thus the need for extensively browsing them, not MIDI controllers which will inevitably use a computer display interfacing and external files for generating sounds.
    I love you to pieces and am a big fan, Arturia, but what a shame. Again - it's 2024, you know, not early 2000's. Aftertouch is quickly phasing in as an industry-standard given on keyboard controllers across all plarforms. A near-norm, now, and no longer an exception or a luxury. Come on, Arturia - are you a *market leader* or a market lagger? I would think not, knowing your fine history of premium quality and competitively rich features that are ahead of the trend. So, respectfully, please get with the current times. Aftertouch functionality is now at the dawning of its keyboard-tech ubiquitous age.
    Sincerely,
    A loyal fan who is lovingly holding your feet to the fire, so that you are not left behind in antiquity.
