The difference is that the makeup doesn't go on a blank flat canvas, but on a human body with all the small intricacies involved. IMHO that makes it much harder. Have you tried using a brown eyebrow pencil and sketching the basic design out first? It might take some extra time, but it should help you get everything symmetrical and mapped out before doing all the final line work in black. Just a thought! : )

I would recommend practicing this look several times before Halloween. Practice will ensure you feel confident the morning/evening of wearing it out. For a basic rough version I would allow 45 mins to an hour for application. For a more polished, crisp version 1 1/2 - 2 hours.

Yes, face paint is a little less subtle than you would want for the foundation, but you can definitely use it for the eyes, nose, teeth and other skeletal details. I recommend Mehron Paradise Black.
This is literally the best tutorial I've ever seen on Tate.All the other ones go too far out and make it look like it took three hours.
