Our latest feature film project was Mother Nature and the Doomsday Prepper (you can check it out on IMDB). We shot about 1/3 of the movie on our LED wall (Studio A). I would love to see a full cost breakdown. How much did everything cost? How much liquid cash did you need up front to make this happen? Who did you hire to help? How much time it took for you to pay back the loan and start bringing in revenue? Did you have prior experience using a studio? How much technical knowledge did you need to make this happen? How did you prioritize what equipment to purchase first? Do you find your life to be more difficult or easy after opening the studio? What would you have done differently? Did you do any marketing or advertising? What was your business plan like? Did you purchase any used equipment? How many employees are there at the studio? How many hours a week do you think you spend there? That's a lot of questions I know, but I'm considering going down this road myself. Thanks for your help!
Hey!!! Awesome questions. We will def make a video about that! I think I can give some insights to you and hopefully help you before you go down that road! #1 and most importantly - hire good people to help you set it up, (lighting console, ceiling grid, and cyc walls) and #2, yes always be looking for great used deals on gear. I picked up a whole set of C-stands and apple boxes from another studio owner that was retiring and saved a bit of money from the new prices - those are items that don’t really age too badly. Craigslist, EBay, etc always be looking for the next deal so you can add to you equipment inventory. I’ll be back with more answers in a video ;)

Most months we at least break even on it and aside from that it allows us to shoot our RUclips channel and have a place for us to edit, store gear, and collaborate- so definitely worth the price of admission. Though when we first started - the first couple years - some months were slower. But that’s why in the beginning it helps to rent out spare rooms to cover any extra overheard you might have. I have a 20x49x12 metal building that had a complete house built inside it. It has industrial ceiling elevated floors - 1.5' and 100 Amp 220 service. I want to bold a 3D virtual reality studio as: 1 make studio 14x20, 1 view holodeck 14x20 and 1 computer/control room 6x40. The make shoot room is special ultra black widow high gain projection screen for composing a special flex-wall 3D in 3D Orrery. It is for making educational videos. I can do this because I desigñ and build cameras, projectors, and screens. Plus I own everything.

I bought an old former theater building about the same size as your studio and turned it into a studio so I could film my own movies. It's in a small town so it wasn't very expensive so I don't have to depend on renting it, the building was just $18K plus another $10K to fix it up and the utilities and taxes are less than my house. I do film in the house too. It's also nice because it did have restrooms, an office and other rooms including space in the balconies, a high ceiling, even a garage door for driving vehicles in. I do use every bit of space like you do. I think if you can do most of the work yourself and can find an existing building that it's definitely the way to go.
That’s really cool! I envy the price you got your building for! What a deal. And yes it’s definitely helped us grow our business and even allows us to get more creative with our own projects. We have space for props, costumes, building sets, etc. Having the space to organize is really more useful than I probably would have thought before we had it! Thanks so much!! 😆 congrats on your space! Sound proofing can get pretty expensive. It really depends on how you do it and how the building is built. In our space we literally built an extra wall on the back wall of the space between the outside. Then added sound proofing and then re-drywalled so there was a secondary wall between the outside. The other 3 walls in our space were luckily not touching outdoor walls. So we only needed to do the 1 wall and the ceiling. The ceiling you can spray or you can build it out for a more DIY approach before you add your grid. I’d estimate $10,000 to $50,000 depending on how many walls and what you do with the ceiling. Hope that helps!

That really depends on where you’re at. By us it’s about $12 per sq foot - includes buildout of the space. In New York city or LA you could probably quadruple that cost or more. Then we spent about $50-$100k on lighting & grip gear and grid, etc.

White or black ceiling is really personal preference. I know a lot of studios prefer black to avoid the reflection of light. I have white ceilings in mine tho. Curtains can be thousands. I’d invest in a sewing machine hit the fabric store and do it yourself or hire a local seamstress. Truss try film tools. We’ll be posting more videos on our studio and setting it up. I'm not taking the plunge....... i'm just gonna have to stay home based..... these days I'm doing less work anyway, so that i can do more of the hobby type film making that i prefer, only problem is that I'm spending money instead of making it :)
Nothing wrong with that. I know a lot of successful film people that are home based. The studio plunge is certainly not for everyone, and I’ve seen more fail locally than one’s that survive. But yes I hear that about spending money. Just bought a vintage lens and an old payphone prop yesterday. This is an expensive career and hobby lol!

Thanks for watching! 3 phase allows you to separate the power for Your cameras, audio and lighting. Each gets its own “phase”. There’s no interference then. More info if you google. But that’s the poor man’s version. And Yes always hire a professional electrician!

Hi Patrick! Thanks for watching. If something is telling you inside, maybe it is your destiny! You don’t need to be an actor to start a studio. If you want to act in your own films tho it certainly helps to have a studio! Start small and slowly build it. You don’t have to buy everything at once. Good luck!

@@FilmJams The studio itself... because I know each individual. Will get different types of gear and materials based how and what they invision. So yeah the cost of actually creating it ,and how much time did it take?
@@smile4me576 the actual cyc and grid were about $50k labor and materials not including any lighting or electrical work. But that was 12 years ago. Now it’d likely cost double as materials are so much more expensive. Took us about a month with 5-6 people working every day.

Our actual studio space is 1600 square ft and I like to think it’s a small to medium size. I’d say small size would be 800-1200 sq ft.

I'm not taking the plunge....... i'm just gonna have to stay home based..... these days I'm doing less work anyway, so that i can do more of the hobby type film making that i prefer, only problem is that I'm spending money instead of making it :)
Nothing wrong with that. I know a lot of successful film people that are home based. The studio plunge is certainly not for everyone, and I’ve seen more fail locally than one’s that survive. But yes I hear that about spending money. Just bought a vintage lens and an old payphone prop yesterday. This is an expensive career and hobby lol!

You’re welcome! Glad you found it helpful. Our total space is about 3200 sq ft. I’ll put a link to our Floor plan below. Thanks for watching! 3 phase allows you to separate the power for Your cameras, audio and lighting. Each gets its own “phase”. There’s no interference then. More info if you google. But that’s the poor man’s version. And Yes always hire a professional electrician!

Hi Patrick! Thanks for watching. If something is telling you inside, maybe it is your destiny! You don’t need to be an actor to start a studio. If you want to act in your own films tho it certainly helps to have a studio! Start small and slowly build it. You don’t have to buy everything at once. Good luck!

@@FilmJams The studio itself... because I know each individual. Will get different types of gear and materials based how and what they invision. So yeah the cost of actually creating it ,and how much time did it take?
@@smile4me576 the actual cyc and grid were about $50k labor and materials not including any lighting or electrical work. But that was 12 years ago. Now it’d likely cost double as materials are so much more expensive. Took us about a month with 5-6 people working every day.
