i still dont understand why they called it the Kimura . Kimura was a judoka who defeated hellio gracie with an ude garami , why they dont called it by its real name ushiro ude garami .
Because Kimura broke Helio's arm using that technique. It's an homage to him and Ushiro Ude Garami sound more weird than kimura in portuguese. Also, you can call is Barbie's Super Magic Technique and is still going to be the same thing. It's just a name. Bjj people are more practical.
The move is named after the Judo dude that fought with Helio and won. The fight is somewhere on the internet - worth watching if you can find it. The size difference between the massive Kimura and Helio is overboard. Shows how bad ass BJJ is.
Actually, when I started BJJ, in 1992, this particular lock was not called the "Kimura". The "Kimura' was the specific version that Kimura used on Helio, the one where you sit on the guys head and have the figure 4 shoulder lock. this was also said to be Kimura's favorite lock, so its a good name. Since that time the term "kimura" has come to mean any figure 4 shoulder lock (don't get me going about the new generation of meat heads calling everything by one or two terms that they manage to remember...."frames"..jesus). In my early training days, the lock being demonstrated here was the called the "Reverse American lock".- At least where I was training.
This used to be a fav go to from my guard ... BJJ is just so efficient.
I love armbar - triangle or triangle - armbar switches
