  • Beige-colored plastic returns on another Retro Gear Time!
    It may be called Betacam, but it was most certainly the alpha dog when it came to broadcast quality. Keep your fingers crossed for Nick and Dan in hopes that this week's retro gear still works!

    Using the Jog Shuttle on a Betacam deck for the first time was one of the things that made you think you were finally part of the important game.

    I am using a UVW1800P right now. Complete with jog and shuttle. It came on an optional remote control DSRM-10.

    The 640x480 resolution quoted here for Betacam SP is incorrect. Lower end UVW decks recorded about 330 horizontal TV lines, while higher end units like the PVW & BVW models could record 360 horizontal TV lines which works out to about 480 horizontal pixels. Effective Betacam SP resolution is about 440 to 480 x 480, but is displayed at 4:3 aspect ratio.

      PAL got 625 horizontal lines, right? Does it mean that Betacam SP footage was not making use of the full PAL performance?

    • @solidaudioTV
      @solidaudioTV 2 года назад

      @@unacertamirada PAL indeed uses a 625-line system but only 576 of those lines are visible. NTSC is 525 lines but work out to be only 480 visible lines. So yes, PAL has a 20% higher resolution capability. I'm not familiar with European equipment, but according to Wikipedia they did make PAL Betacam SP machines, so they would have taken advantage of the increased resolution. However, keep in mind that is only one specification. PAL uses 50Hz and 50 fields or 25 full frames per second vs NTSC's 60Hz and 60 fields or 30 full fps. So the motion won't be quite a smooth in PAL but it's still a little better than film. Also, PAL uses a different type of color processing but I'm not really knowledgeable enough to say which is better.

      Lines of resolution are different than scan lines. Pre SP versions recorded a resolution of 330 lines. The broadcast recording was 525 lines, of which 486 were visible lines. 3/4 Umatic was at 280 lines of resolution in the same era. But they all recorded the same raster.

    Did the analog Betacam platform us AFM audio? I’m assuming that betacam digital had digital audio.

    How many times could you copy a Betacam recording before you started to loose picture quality? For example, a second generation VHS copy clearly already had breakdown in the picture.

    • @MaxFederman
      @MaxFederman 3 года назад +2

      Depends on the configuration, the decks allowed for both composite and component connections and using the component connections direct dubs could be very difficult to tell one generation from another until the 6th or 7th pass

      If you stuck a betamax tape in, you would hear one audio channel with the audio at high speed. I think the machines were designed to kick a betamax tape out.
      I once wondered how long a 90 minute big cassette would play in a betamax. If I remember right, I came up with 24 hours of recording at Beta III.
