- BUSHCRAFT AND KNIFE SKILLS GO HAND IN HAND. WHAT IS THE BEST DESIGN FOR BUSHCRAFT.IN THIS FIRST IMPRESSIONS REVIEW OF THE HELLE GAUPE KNIFE AND MY THOUGHTS ON HOW WELL IT WOULD SERVE AS A CLASSIC BUSHCRAFT WOODSCRAFT KNIFE.IS THE HELLE THE ULTIMATE BUSHCRAFT KNIFE. I WILL LET YOU DESIDE THAT.
I have the Helle Utvar. It's very similar to the knife you showed but, the Utvar is a full-tang knife. The tang comes to a point sticking out about 3/8 of an inch and is very sharp, enough to strike a fire. The main reason I bought it (about $250) is that with the tang sticking out the way it does, it could easily be used for a "one-handed" fire. Place it behind the knee to hold it and use a fero rod to strike into your tinder. I like it a lot. Thanks for bringing the Gubb to our attention!
I have a Helle Harding. Love it. They have a wonderful handle.
Good to know!
Great showing sir great knife thanks for sharing blackie
my pleasure
I'll admit to having lusted for a Helle knife myself.😁
Lol. You, Blackie and a certain peanut farmer we all know and respect.
Yes Blackie please keep us updated on that knife, always saw these and wanted one but have always heard mixed reviews and just always gone with other knives… would love to know how this knife has held up to your standards! Keep us updated please!
Those Helle knives were original designed for hunters and their purpose is for food prep and butchering of whatever animal the hunter had killed, for wood-crafting they were carrying a midsized forest ax. The knife isn't designed for hard use, the rattail tang would break if you batoned the knife. It is a very beautiful knife.
Hey Blackie, I received a Helle as a gift also but mine is a Fjellkniven. They look identical.
Fantastic craftsmanship.
that is a very nice looking knife, great gift !!!! nice to have options for what you plan on doing
Very nice knife. I've been wanting one ,one day.
I've had the gaupe and utvaer for about 6 years now and these things are very well built.
Beautiful knife. I'm glad you mentioned Mora. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was that the blade looks a lot like a Mora Garberg. Of course, the Garberg has a through tang and already has the spine and is 2/3 of the price. Still a beautiful tool!
Nice knife.
It reminds me of a grind I have which is Swedish it's a bahco knife. I got it in a set with the bahco saw. It's really sharp , really great steal I keep it in my haversack to do my Camp chores with. Have a great day now. Thanks again.
If you want to leave the spine un-filed, where the bevel grind meets the spine is usually sharp enough to use for a ferro-rod and use a thumb scraping technique to get a fat spark like Ray Mears. It is a beautiful knife .
Oh yeah, I totally agree. If I had my WC Master Woodsman on a canoe, and I heard "bloopp!" I don't know which would hit the bottom of the lake first, the knife or my heart. I'd probably jump in after it. 😄😄
Nice knife Blackie, I've wondered about the Helle knives too. I don't remember seeing that model. I like it.👍🔪
Beautiful, well put together, quality material & useful around camp; the stuff lustful dreams are made of...
Couldn't agree more!
I luv that birchy boi nice knife
currently building a knife for my dad using a Gaupe blade attached to a section of deer antler from his buck this year.
Beautiful knives for sure - have always wanted one but just haven’t pulled the trigger. Maybe you will be able to convince me? Looking forward to more videos on this knife!!!
I'm a butcher. One of my workers went on a camp in the woods with his people. He brought me back a Swedish blade thar was fixed to a hand turned birch handle that someone made there. Same guy made a leather pouch also. I love it.
nice
It's pronounced "gah-oo-pah and it's the word for the wild cat "Lynx" hence the paw print on the sheath. Got one myself and love it... knife, that is...
Looks like a good knife. Thanks for showing us.
nice one Blackie. How about a video with all the knives that you own?
EEEEKKKK.. that would be a huge video..lol
(low whistle) - man, that handle looks amazing. I generally go for synthetic handles but have such a huge appreciation for the aesthetics of a wood handled knife.
Thanks again for the video!
Looks like a great addition to your kit..!
Thanks 👍
Great video Blackie. I like Helle knives, but right now I am trying to decide which W.C. knife I want.
MY ADVICE IN THE WC WORLD BLACKBIRD LOL
On another subject: Still happily using the Trangia knockoff cookset ,no problems except now owned by another company, and raised price to 30$.
Have always wanted one, just haven't convinced myself to pull the trigger 🤠
Gaupe is Norwegian for Lynx. So it might be a lynx paw and not a wolfs paw on the sheath.
Like your videos btw :)
thanks for the info safe journeys
Good video, thanks for sharing, God bless !
Thanks for watching!
Hello Blackie purely out of interest I looked up this knife, according to Helle's website Gaupe is Norwegian for Lynx Bill

Smokey Mountain Knife Works has them for $134.00. Never had one but i JUST MIGHT NOW! THANKS FORT HE REVIEW.

Thanks for the video.
You are welcome!
Happy Easter to you Blackie and family.
Same to you!
@@BLACKIETHOMAS Thank you.
Helle make some great blades .
You got that right!
did u say 'green sparkle berry wood'? so that means it is "berry" good??? hehe ya ya I know stupid joke. lol. happy easter y'all
lol yes local we call it sparkleberry but it is really the largest type of blueberry bush..
Yes, excellent review.
Thank you kindly!
Looking forward to your thoughts
Has the behemoth, the full 2lbs Tom Brown Tracker fallen by the wayside?
I do like my mora classic!
“I had lust in my heart for one of these knives.” Blackie, you sound like a certain gentleman from Georgia who retired from a government job to his home on a Georgia farm.
LOL
Aren't the vast majority of Helle's (and Karesuando too)
Just 12c27 like the stainless Moras?
(I do know they have a couple of different steels on some knives tho)
Happy Easter 🐰
You too
I find it very interesting that You as an experienced Woodsman are willing to trust your life to a rat tail knife. I wouldn't,!! Especially when there are so many much stronger full tang knives out there.
Gaupe = Lynx
👊👊👊👊👊👊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
I have a Helle knife, it's almost too nice to use, other than that it's the perfect bushcraft knife.
The best bushcraft knife is the one you have, when you need it.
i agree
Must be stainless steel because carbon steel doesn't shine like that for long. I got a good deal on the Nansen by Brusletto back in 2008 while I waited for my Skookum Bush Tool. is
Yes..it is laminated stainless
" gowpa " Helle is Norwegian, puukko's are Finnish, Mora's are Swedish.....the Finn's are not Scandinavian, they are a Lettic people
sorry my bad..thanks for pointing that out
People ofte call nordic style knives "puukko" style. Its just because nordic countries like finland, and the scandinavian countries use very similar knives. Here in finland we also call moras puukko we dont make distinction just because its from sweden.
everything but a scandi. but the majority has no clue and is buying those like crazy. :-)
don't get me wrong, I got a Mora too, but only because it's cheap.
If knives are like clothes, then grinds would be the shoes. Pick a grind for your desired task. Blade shapes are another thing, drop point I like, don’t care much for recurves though.
