Have you heard Brown Marks jazz songs? After I heard it I said that he literally proven that he is as great as his boys Prince and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
Same chords. Jam & Lewis aren't the 1st or the only to do it. LA Reid & Babyface used to do THE SAME thing with most of the artists they wrote songs or produced for in the 1980s & 1990s. Takes a musical ear to pick it up. I used to notice the similarities between certain songs all the time. Just change a chord here & there, add a few overdubs, etc & viola! You got a whole "new" song. Hollywood does the same with TV & movie scripts on the regular.

Amazing episode with new stories I haven’t heard before!! I’m smiling tonight! I love Jody Watley! She was married to Andre. They recently were on a new tour together for beautiful Jody!! I’m grateful for the amazing memories of the 80s and 90s! ❤️💜💜
Hearing about how Prince threw out Janet’s Control cd out the window of his car kinda was like ouch! But I understand why he did it. The sound was so similar. I’m a fan of Jimmy and Terry too! Minneapolis sound forever! 💖💜💜💜💜
Great as always. Loved when prince asked who is singing this line. I'm not singing that and you not singing that to me. 😂💜 I would have said that same thing. Ready for more. 💜
Another great episode. I had heard all that before, but the way you present your video really makes me go back & rethink a thought or two. The story we were given for "The Black Album" may not entirely be what it really was. Did he really go on a drug enticed trip & got "inspired" by unclean spirits to create it OR was it a tongue-in-cheek response to him being referred to at that time of not being "black" enough? Whatever THAT phrase really meant it must have stung Prince to go & create a more (if not THE most urban/gritty music that we in the public domain had ever heard. Now what's inside the vault may be something different. I wonder if "Gold N*gga" was another type of project as a response to the changing sounds that a musician like Prince was up against vs. the age of rap & hip hop. I heard an interview by Quincy Jones 2 or 3 yrs ago describing that "box" Prince took to Michael's house for that meeting when Michael wanted Prince to perform "Bad" with him. I also heard Prince tell the story to Chris Rock from his perspective. Quincy basically let the cat out of the bag that that box was a "dybbuk". Look it up, but sounds like his intentions were not good. They were about to take that rilvary & competition too far.
This 'Lovesexy' Band is my favorite Prince band. It's just too bad that they didn't have an official name. That's the only reason why they don't get mentioned as much as the others. They could turn it out all night.
Agreed. No need for The Revolution band to feel slighted. If true that he said so The Revolution was NOT the band for the type of music fusion that the LoveSexy band could perform. No slight just FACTS. They had a great run & made music that some still think was his best ever created. I beg to differ though. The industry & sounds had changed BUT true musicianship is what was his bread & butter. Prince stuck to what HE knew best & it paid off.
@@kamfisher1714 Well IF he wasn't "relevant" post 1989 as YOU say them WHAT was so intriguing about this particular video that YOU decided to watch it? Everyone has their preference as to which bands & styles of music Prince played the best with as well as WHICH band played "the best" or "better" than others. That is based on the ears of the LISTENER; however, 1 thing reigns the MOST SUPREME & that is IF PRINCE was satisfied with WHICHEVER band HE chose & HE paid to record, perform & tour with him then THAT is what was the most important thing. Obviously he had a plethora of fans who supported him & whichever band he was feeling at the moment & the type of sound & project that HE chose to put out for sale. If a consumer chose not to listen or buy the music then that was THEIR CHOICE. He seemed to be cool with the fickleness of the consumers either way as HE did things HIS way & stayed true to HIMSELF regardless of what others thought.
It did not pay off, because he was not getting the hits regular! He was a genius but he made some terrible career decisions and was having too much involvement with women, instead of concentrating on his career! His album sales after Purple Rain, were extremely poor!@@michaellane486
First I have to say to the content creator of this channel. Some of the best content around. Mike and Prince always jump to the top of the list in regards to stories like this. Were they rivals.? Yes. Were they active participants in the rivalry? Most likely..Yes. Was the rivalry as intense as the media created.? Most likely.. No. I remember Barack Obama saying that to consider running for president of the United States requires a bit of megalomania and Insanity. I think with Prince the ego was easier to see and accept most of the time. With Michael's image it wasn't as glaringly apparent. But understand this...in order to be Prince and/or Michael and to achieve what they both did... the ego that's involved is incomprehensible to most people. Not only did they compete with each other. They competed with any other artists that had the capability to reach that number one spot. Yes.. they definitely made music for the love of the art itself. But more often than not... the goal was that number one spot
I can't believe that Sheena Easton help co-wrote la la la he he he as a B-side like it says on the maxi single 12" even though she didn't even sing on the track cuz it doesn't even sound like something that she would do.
Michael & Prince really are \more alike than different, both grew up under stern distant fathers who wanted to be famous respected musicians themselves but had to live in the shadow of their sons. The big difference I see is their relationships with their Moms and how it may have influenced their characters as men and artists. Prince seemed to be driven by insecurity whereas Michael was driven by stability.
One had stability in a little bit more sheltered even though Michael’s childhood was abusive but It provided more stability but Prince on the other hand (abusive and neglecting childhood trauma) was on his own as a 12 year old child bouncing around from different homes that’s going to make him a control freak it just is if there’s no stability in your childhood you’re going to be distrusting as an adult Prince wanted to feel loved and wanted and those scars run deep They both had troubled childhoods Which affected them in different ways You can hear Prince’s resentment for his mother in his rendition of Motherless child It seem to affect his ability to trust other women I think Michael related to women in a different way But I think both of them were over sexualized when they were children most definitely
I disagree. They were always compared to each other, but they were completely different. One example would be that Michael was always trying to top himself with each successive album. He played the game which was mine an album for everything it's worth, and then wait 3 or 4 years before you put out another album. By waiting you give time for demand to build for your next project. Look at the years of his album releases, 1979, 1982, 1987, 1991, 1995. By waiting 4 years and promoting the hell out of every album you increase sales. Prince on the other hand only really cared about sales up until Purple Rain. After that he knew he'd never have to worry about money again, and he could basically do what he wanted musically. He was far too prolific to wait 4 years between albums which is why he basically put out an album a year. I mean Prince didn't even wait a full year after Purple Rain, his best selling album, to put out Around The World In A Day. He released it a mere 10 months later which was insane. Had he continued to promote and release singles fro PR, The Beautiful Ones surely would've been a hit. Imagine if Prince would've waited 4 years to release his next album. You'd have the following singles all on the same album: Raspberry Beret, Pop Life, Kiss, Mountains, and Alphabet St. You take those 5 songs and replace 5 songs on Sign O' The Times, which is a masterpiece already, and imagine how many albums that would've sold. Michael was trying to sell as many albums as he could, while Prince was just trying to get his music out there as quickly as he could. There are many differences between them, but this is a key one.
One was a MUSICIAN one wasn't One was a songwriter one wasn't One was a producer one wasn't One was regarded as the musicians music one wasn't Jesus ..I wince when I read this
@@jonylawson73 If my post made you wince then perhaps you should go back and reread it. This time assume it’s coming from a Prince fan rather than an MJ fan. My point was that MJ cared more about album sales, and Prince cared more about the art. I’m not sure how you think that’s me slamming Prince. One of the things you always hear from MJ fans is that he sold more records. I was trying to make the point that if Prince wanted to sell more records, he could have “played the game” and sold more records. However, he cared more about the music than the sales. Michael was the opposite.
@@ronnix23 No sir, respectfully I think you're looking at the business side really hard which has nothing to do with them as men or artists but has everything to do with others in charge of their labels, Warner & Epic. It is known that Michael created at a similar pace except he didn't think everything he did was genius, Prince did, so he wanted to put songs out upon completion, that's a person who is prolific but not a shrewd businessman. And it makes sense because he wasn't taught the business like MJ. It seems to me as men and artists they had very similar influences & natures (both are at heart funk/bluesmen who move like James Brown with a lil jazz or rock thrown in depending on their mood) but nurture is what separated them. Once his talent was discovered he was scooped up by his father and polished, while John L told his son he'd couldn't touch his piano cause he wasn't as good! Prince was eventually kicked out by his father, Michael was once sent to live with Diana Ross when they first signed to Motown, which is the closest he's ever been to something like that, and I say this to drive home my point in the post above that Prince was always operating like there wasn't a tomorrow, whereas Michael expected the next day. Michael listened to reason, Prince got rid of reason until it was too late. That's a character flaw that obviously affected his personal relationships, his artistry & business! Peace
I just knew Alexander O'Neal was kicked out due to his image. Morris Day was chosen because Prince wanted someone similar in appearance and wanted to play into the alter ego theme. Day is a good performer but O'Neal is the better singer.
Hi Sinnik22. I am really enjoying your videos. Thanks for your efforts. Can I ask a question? What programme/filter did you use on the thumbnail to get that effect on prince's face. I love it.
Like that Prince was so competitive. That was a beautiful thing. Love that. When Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis went on their own. That Janet Jackson album really had the entrenched sound of Prince. I get it. When I hear Alexander O' Neal talk about how Prince expressed colorism. That was not fortuitous. In the end Alexander was motivated to be great. Everyone wins. Michael Jackson planned it with his marketing team. It was all a process. I prefer Michael's way how to market a piece of work. The whole campaign for Purple Rain was genius. That was one of the times where he(Prince)was forced to slow down and let the work marinate. There you go the result was bombastic. I'm involved in the music industry, and we have learned to allow the process to dictate us what to do. I understand why Prince couldn't wait. But, maybe he should've sometimes. I don't recommend to young Artists to be that difficult if you are not a Prince.
Such a magnificent, insightful comment Gary...as was your stellar video on D'Angelo. D'Angelo. The ONLY man who stopped me listening to Prince for a while. Stopped me dead. Now who else on the planet is gonna make a Prince admirer do that? Only D'Angelo. Brown Sugar, Voodoo, Black Messiah and the rest...made me put Prince albums AWAY...for more than a while! (And I'm a person who has to have 'Shockadelica', 'Scarlet Pussy', 'Feel U Up' on heavy rotation, funk soldier and all that)...even now, Brown Sugar is...a part of my soul. Competition can be good Gary...it strengthens the will, motivation and purpose. It's just that the stepping over and the dismissal of other people in order to compete, that's what is going to have long term repercussions. Anyway, peace, all good. 🌿
Absolutely brilliant comment! Prince was putting out so much material, but a lot of it was simply quantity, not quality! He should have slowed down and put out the real great songs like Michael did! Prince record sales were not good after Purple Rain!
Him not wanting to do Bad bc of the "your butt is mine" part reads as some type of insecurity on Prince's part. Like, the lyric had nothing to do with actually wanting another man's butt! It's just a G rated version of "your ass is mine" which is what someone would say to a person that they're about to FIGHT!! I can't believe the best collab in music history never happened just because of some "nO hOMo" shit. 😒
It really was not that. .At that time Prince would never rock on a quincy Jones production or anyone's production. He was just talking smack for kicks in that interview
I was supposed to be a NPG band member, but got passed up for a NYC DJ… Diamond j… I ain’t mad.. things don’t always work out the way you want… but time will tell you why.
I will admit that The Revolution was everybody’s favorite band because of the memories that came with them. The music, the videos and the Movie Purple Rain , but let’s be real for a minute… The Revolution can’t touch that Sign of the Time band I’m sorry. They were way more exciting and entertaining. Lisa can’t out sing Bonnie. Bobby z couldn’t out play Sheila. Wendy was nowhere near Miko. Then you add Eric Leeds and Katt there is no way The Revolution was better than them.
You know what's interesting about that? The members of the Lovesexy Band were more advanced musicians, but the Revolution played better as a unit in my opinion. I know that sounds crazy, but a lot of songs sounded tighter with the Revolution playing that both bands played
My thoughts exactly. There is just NO comparing the 2 bands. I have said time & time again that it was the MOVIE & crossover appeal that endeared The Revolution to the minds of those who just can't see how the other bands were really superior. No slight to them, but to get to the funk & delve into other genres of sound & music they just didn't have the "it" needed to do that. I also liked Eric Leeds on sax followed my Maceo. Add to that the other drummers & all outside of Bobby Z to include Morris Day), the other talented keyboardist such as Rosie Gains & other females he toured with as well as Renato Neto. I could go on but I think you catch my drift. Too bad that the die hard Purple Rain era fans just never crossed over to the other projects he did, sounds he created & grew along with him. They are happy to be stuck in their 37 year time warp STILL digging on that soundtrack & trashing anything beyond it. Too bad as they have no idea what they've missed.
@@michaellane486 I saw Prince live 4 times. Twice with the Revolution, The Lovesexy Tour and the Musicology Tour. There was a certain unity that the Rev had that no other band possessed. Some people like the Revolution more. That's just how it is. You can argue musicianship and what have you. It's a matter of what people like. I had a blast at the Lovesexy Tour. Had to see that band live after the SOTT movie as they didn't tour the U.S. for that album. But it wasn't as captivating as the Purple Rain and Parade Tours were. Musicology was great too.
@@avace917 Your opinion vs. my opinion. Nothing wrong with that. Your ears hear & like what they like & so does mine. Let's just agree to disagree. Either way it's of no major importance to me as long as I am there for the music the interpersonal & personnel issues within any of his bands was not my concern. He moved on FROM The Revolution to other bands HE created in order to play & get the end result musical products put out to his fans, and THAT is what truly mattered. Not opinions about which WE think was best. If HE was satisfied then all we could do was either accept it & buy the music as a way of support or not. Facts are facts. He disbanded them.
Well.. they only come at you when you're on the mountain top. Even kids play..King of the Hill. Michael Jackson.. honestly no one was ever going to take his place. Agree (with some of this) DB. I've said elsewhere, not enough hours in the day for Terence Trent D'Arby's voice, he's gifted in that regard. Poor Alexander O'Neil! What did he do to you? Hehe...what, he's a nothing burger? Perhaps it's because you're comparing him to someone else? He's simply an artist in his own right that can be taken or left. I liked both, but to compare MJ and Prince is wrong. MJ was a great entertainer with it´s own limits and the only thing he had better than Prince was the dancing part. Prince was a complete artist, a genius with no limits, he had better vocals, he was a better musician and played like 30 instruments, he was a better composer, he had an infinite diversity in music and styles and he was one of the top guitarists out there...if not the best. Again, to compare Prince with MJ....or anyone else is just wrong and makes no sense.
1. The Revolution is an iconic band but they were not a great band. The contributions by Wendy and Lisa to Sign O The Times would've made it an inferior album had they not been excised. 2. Alexander O'Neal was booted from The Time because he asked for too much money upfront. 3. Jill Jones and Susan Rogers are not qualified to say what black people thought about Prince. We loved him then and still do.
Peace JP…generally agree...you might have to specify what you consider to be a ‘great band’…if someone challenges ya though. Musicianship of The Revolution was tight and on point, but surely only because Prince made them that way, right? Also, you might be aware that The Revolution were involved in early versions of some of those songs on Sign o’ the Times...certainly 'Strange Relationship', certainly ‘It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night’. People make a big deal about how ‘super duper’ Wendy & Lisa were…and how they added ‘so much’ to Prince’s creativity…erm, so how come their first 3 albums sound like Prince albums! I’d say it’s his style that inspired them. Put on their ‘Are You My Baby,' or, I dunno, ’Skeleton Key’, off’ve their Eroica album..and tell me who that sounds like! Their lil' Prince inspired Wendy & Lisa funk, hehe. Yes, Jill Jones is of mixed heritage, might’ve been the straight blonde dyed hair that fooled ya. 🌿
if I was your girlfriend is probably his best song but the sign o of the times concert version because he wanted to do Camille’s voice in the album version? Why??? Why?? His regular voice would’ve made that a hit but he tried to be smarter than he actually was.
You have not done your home work! A large percentage of “Sign O' the Times” was originally recorded with the Revolution - keyboardist Lisa Coleman, guitarist Wendy Melvoin, drummer Bobby Z, bassist Brownmark and keyboardist Matt Fink - although that is not fully reflected in the original album's credits.
It was not because Alexander O’Neal what is too: “black” He was acting to self righteous and demanding before he even got the contract signed talking about Alexander’s not do this Alexander is not gonna do that But of course he’s going to use the cop out that Prince was Hating on him because he was too dark which isn’t even true no you’re full of yourself🙄 Even refer to yourself in third person How much more arrogant can you get😒
@@kensmechanicalaffair Yeah he’s talented for sure but I don’t like the fact that he wasn’t truthful as to why he didn’t get hired and it wasn’t because he was too dark

That is what band members jamming are to produce. IDEAS and more ideas. Prince then took the sessions, put it together and created the music. Just take on board the success of every band member after they left the band… NOT. Prince knew what they were thinking and grumbling about. With the genius Prince had, I would have rid myself of those bad vibes the band members carried also.
Why was it of importance for Prince and Michael Jackson to collaborate together. These two entertainers was totally different. Their energy was 100 % different. When an entertainer as large as Prince and Michael is no longer on the scene rumors and negativity starts. Why wait when the person can no longer defend themselves. I'm sorry, but Prince Roger Nelson was a Genius and there will never be another. The man could play 27 different instruments, sing, dance, write songs, actor, need I say more. Michael Jackson, yes was a great entertainer, but he and Prince comparison was miles and miles a part. Someone stated that Prince was only Black when it was convenient. Each Black that starts in the Industry of Brown complexion would conveniently becomes lighter each time the Celeb was seen. Prince started with I want to be your lover, a brown man with a huge Afro, and as he progressed Prince became lighter and hair straighter. The extreme of skin lightened and straight hair with Michael was on an entirely different level. Plus the nose job. They both as time went by looked totally different. Prince Roger Nelson is missed daily💜💜💜💜💜, and so is Michael Jackson❤❤❤. Two entertainers gone much to soon. Both was painted as addicted to pain meds. Not saying that Prince couldn't become dependent on pain meds, but not knowingly taking pills that would cause him his life. NO WAY!!! I don't understand when or who will have to loose their life behind bad meds being sold will be investigated. When? That's murder. Prince was in pain and the slightest gap in between and now he's deceased and it's so sad.

Never was a fan of Prince. There are a few songs from the 70s and 80s that I like very much. A couple of songs from the 80s provide a bit of nostalgia. I was never a fan of the tintinnabulations of instruments in Prince's music. Too much 4 me! Both Prince and Michael became malignant narcissists who appeared to be angels during interviews. Not being a 'fan' of Prince or Michael is okay, honestly. You can relax. Liking a few songs (of theirs) is honestly okay too. Not being a fan of his ’tintinnabulations’ (lol) is ENTIRELY expected when one generally doesn’t like someone’s music, no? Really thank you for checking out the channel. You went back.
I loved the "Lovesexy'' Band as well!!
@@michaellane486 It didn’t pay off because he wasn’t relevant after 1989
@@kamfisher1714 Well IF he wasn't "relevant" post 1989 as YOU say them WHAT was so intriguing about this particular video that YOU decided to watch it?

"You get a cast of characters like that...you got yourself One HELLUVA TEAM."
Oh, boy DID HE EVER. Yep.
He had the Baddest Band in the World.
Could you imagine if Prince sang and played guitar on "Bad" instead of that organ solo? It(BAD)would've doubled its album sales.🔥🔥🔥
@Tony Lol cope. MJ 87 demolished prince.
One was a MUSICIAN one wasn't
One was a songwriter one wasn't
One was a producer one wasn't
One was regarded as the musicians music one wasn't
Jesus ..I wince when I read this
@@jonylawson73 If my post made you wince then perhaps you should go back and reread it.

@@reliableandrewappreciate you. Thanks for checking out the video. More to come.

That collab would of been corny, anybody with any oversight would of seen that. They were both way too independent.

I was supposed to be a NPG band member, but got passed up for a NYC DJ… Diamond j… I ain’t mad.. things don’t always work out the way you want… but time will tell you why.
I wonder why The Revolution didn’t go on together
They were a great group that were loved in spite of Price
What you say you witnessed at the concert re:band unity has nothing to do with whether or not they were not as unified, coordinated or there was lacking cohesion for the particular show(s) you attended.
@@michaellane486 Fair enough. We see and hear things differently.
Well.. they only come at you when you're on the mountain top. Even kids play..King of the Hill. Michael Jackson.. honestly no one was ever going to take his place. Whatever my mindset is I can find something musically by him that pairs well with my mood at the time. But in case you don't know.. TTD... Terrance Trent D'Arby was a force to be reckoned with.

Jill Jones I think is biracial & identifies as black.

NO WAY!!!
