I'm not the biggest fan either. I find Snow White in the old-school version of Sleeping Beauty to be one of the weakest Disney princesses. I just couldn't connect with Snow White. So, I'm actually open to some updated changes. Hopefully, we'll get some catchy songs, as Snow White didn't have many songs that I enjoyed. Personally, I've always considered Snow White to have potential for a horror film, given the dark undertones in some scenes - and I'm not talking about lighting, but rather the storyline.

About the kiss without consent: Do you know that in the Grimm version, this kiss isn't even there? Snow White comes back to life because one of the dwarfs fell over a root while they were carrying her coffin, which made it fall down and this made the piece of apple Snow White had in her throat fall out. Apparently the poisonous apple only works while it is inside the body.
Very unrealistic, I know, but at least no kiss without consent.

Exactly! What I have a bigger issue with in the original story is the fact that she’s 14 and he’s almost 30! Like I get back in the 1500s people died earlier, but for modern times, I definitely feel like they should close up that age gap a bit. 😬😅

@@youtubewontletmetypeagoodu8128 It's not a made-up story. If you review interviews from that time period when the movie first came out, it was confirmed that she was a minor. Only reason they changed later on or some Disney reps denied it because they didn’t wanna get backlash later on. So they changed it. My grandma was born around that time, and she mentions that it was always the talk of the town that snow white was a minor. Even her personality and the way she interacts, it's evident that her lack of aspirations was due to her young age. Most teenagers don't have major aspirations. She acted very immature, and I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but you can clearly see she was extremely young and naive.

She was flawed and focused heavily on her appearance, she was not focused on leadership, but simply surviving in a cutthroat Court she wasn't born into! But she learns and grows, and makes mistakes! It's funny because this "iconic true love's kiss scene" isn't even part of the original story. In the German fairy tale she wakes up because when the drawfs carry her in the coffin one of the drawfs stumbles and that jolt makes her spit out a piece of the apple so she wakes up. She was "dead" cause that apple she ate was stuck in her throat and she couldn't breathe, and not especially because of the poison.
I get why Disney changed it. It's not very lightful or final-scene-like to spit out a piece of apple instead of a magically kiss breaking a curse. But German fairy tales are something different

Here's the thing that I feel like a lot of people miss: Snow White, even the 1937 version, is not as helpless as people give her credit for. She could have just cried herself to death in the woods. Instead, she not only finds possible shelter, but devises a plan to convince the house owners into giving her refuge by being observant and resourceful and realizing one of her strengths is housekeeping, and that housekeeping might a key to saving her from the queen.
The 1959 Aurora is, really, a lot closer to what a lot of the hyper-feminists accuse Snow White of being: Aurora barely has 20 lines in the entire film and the most complex emotion she feels is sadness that her boyfriend can't come over. At least Snow White took care of herself and used the few skills she had to her advantage.

This is a better way to update the film than what they’re actually trying to do.
But it’s sad that Disney is most likely not gonna let this happen. And will continue to go the wrong direction with this.
The Little Mermaid was a good example on how to update a story from the past for modern audiences. (Of coarse it could have done a few things a little bit better) But it was good.
And now suddenly we get this? Either it’s the crew who are making the movie, the company or both. (Probably both) that are to blame for this.
I’m not even bothered that a Latina is going to be Snow White. She’s not even that dark.
(At least on some pictures) just wish she respected the original film more.
But I don’t think we should deny that snow white’s skin tone is an iconic trait. Just like Ariel’s was her hair.
Sure her name doesn’t come from the fact that her skin is almost white as snow In the 1937 version. Cause they never mention that part.
But the mirror mentioned she has “skin white as snow” along with the other features like her red lips and black hair.
It bothers me a little bit because her appearance is mentioned in the original movie. And I’m just left thinking, what will they do with that?
But oh well. She isn’t even that dark anyway. We have bigger problems, like with how much they changed the story and character’s.

THANK YOU! To me (also as a mixed race person) it’s laughable that they consider her to be “brown” when, just like Meghan Markle, she’s literally one shade off from being “white”. @@Tttttttttttttttt484 Good point. But while Snow White isn’t exactly white as snow. She doesn’t really have a tan. And for most of the movie, she’s actually really pale skinned.
Those other comparison photos are just parts of the movie where the appearance doesn’t match up. So yeah, not white as snow, probably just an exaggerated description for really pale skin.
The live action Snow White now just has a skin-tone that most white people have. And most of the white people I’ve seen don’t have really pale skin that’s almost white. But I still don’t really have any actual problem with the casting. Other than what the actress thinks of the original film.
I’m probably being to picky about skin color though. I did say she wasn’t even that dark.

We should focus criticism on Disney and the writers, not the actress. While I don't know much about her, being a model and actress myself, I liked how Eric pursued Halle in The Little Mermaid, showing mutual interest despite her saving him. Changes could make her more confident while desiring true love. It's fair to mention Snow White's youth (she was a minor) in the original, which explains her lack of aspirations.
I agree with your other changes, except for the dwarves. There shouldn't be a deep scene between Snow White and Grumpy. The original dwarves' names and attitudes should remain, portraying characters without relying on stereotypes.

I had an idea where she knows that she has to return home to face the queen if the leaks are anything to go off of after waking up, but she has all this pressure to live up to her beloved saintly parents. She gets frustrated at her lack of ideas for her to do by herself when someone (I was thinking grumpy) would say something like “of course you don’t have all the answer. No one ever has all the answers to every single problem right away. Not even this guy” he says while elbowing Doc or whoever the leader is. Then the dwarfs would all agree and say that that they rely on each other and while you can be smart in one or multiple areas, there are still plenty of things that you could still need help with and there’s nothing wrong with that. That’s why her parents were so loved: their kindness, generosity, willing to help anyone in need, and they even had a council of advisers that consisted of people living in the kingdom. With that, Snow gets an idea and leads everyone back to the castle. It’s still technically girl boss, but it’s not the warrior “Mary sue” girl boss that Disney is making a cliché at this point for every live action girl.

the idea of the kiss that by loving each other so much their kisses would wake them up from death promising that if it happens they would kiss... it seems so corny to me that it's perfect and that would be great.
I, as someone who has not liked live action since 2016 or 2017, since I did not like most of the productions from there, lagging behind with respect to their animated versions, I recognize and even applaud that at least Ariel has been one of the female characters in disney that still kept many remnants of her personality in her live action, I wonder why they don't keep doing it, besides, I feel that the issue of being promoted as snow white"""latin""" (it is considered very American in Latin America), it did not lead anywhere because they did not take advantage of transferring the history of Germany to "nueva granada" (Colombia) of the 16th century, as they did with the little mermaid that was transferred to the Caribbean.
And about Greta... who assures us that production and directors have not gotten their dirty hands into the already written script?, it happens more than one thinks.
Actually, regarding the name, the adaptation of the 30s does not mention the three characteristics of Snow White, they only mention that in the story where it is called Snow White because it is white as snow so that more later the queen died of complications from childbirth
I know you don't have to draw quick conclusions, at least for me the vast majority of live action is destined to be MID and I would have preferred new animated reinterpretations of the same stories since that was the thing that made Disney great.

Snow White is perfect the way it is. The original story is about puberty (the girl falls asleep at around 12 or 13 and wakes up when she's an adult).
And in the movie, she actually has a character arc, and a good one. Disney made the movie during the era of the great depression, showing a girl who, though of noble origin, does not mind rolling up her sleeves. At first she has to, because the queen makes her, but she does not complain. She dreams of "the one she loves to find her", which shows that she does not want anyone to save her from rags but merely to find someone who cares for her at last. Having to run into the forest, at first she is frightened, but she does not cry for anyone to rescue her. Then she realizes that the creatures of the woods are actually harmless and learns that with kindness and cheerfulness she can make friends in the great unknown. She is led to the hut of the dwarves and immediately decides to do something for them, i.e. cleaning up and cooking. She makes a real home of their mess. Later we see her being strict in a motherly way, asking the dwarves to wash their hands before they eat. But she also sings and dances with them. She tells them that she hopes for her prince to find her again, but does not expect him to "save" her.
As for the non-consensual kiss, it's one of the most foolish interpretations I have ever heard. Please, watch the movie again!! Everybody believes her to be DEAD, that's why they build her a coffin! How should they know that she's just in a deep sleep? How should a supposedly DEAD person give her consent?! The prince is so sad when he finds her because he believes she died in the meantime. He kisses her GOODBYE before hanging his head in grief. But since this is a fairy tale, something beautiful and magical must happen - not having been actually dead, she wakes up and he takes her home.
Sorry, I didn't mean to insult your video. You have some points. But these "modern" interpretations are so stupid that they make me want to bang my head against the wall. Non-consensual, my goodness, these self-appointed feminists need to grow a brain.

I respect your take but I think you’re being wayyyy too considerate to her. She literally called the Prince in the original a stalker and speaks about it with such disdain, putting Snow White as a character down and the original production. She clearly doesn’t understand or respect it and this is one of the most important films in film history- the basis from which this entire company was built upon. She’s admitted to not liking the original and never having a connection to it. The only reason she likes this movie is because of her presence in it and it’s giving her attention and money and a starring role in something lol for a movie this important, I want someone who understands the story and resonates with it and it means something to that person. Not someone who’s doing the story equivalent of “let’s tear this wall down and build a new one hjuck hjuck!” Also it’s been confirmed that Rachel pitched story and it was approved for a few sequences, so she does have input. And the disrespectful way she talked about the actor who played the prince potentially losing his job…while she’s talking about needing streaming shares from a movie that hasn’t come out yet because she has to stand in a princess dress😅
I will say the original Snow White was incredible in so many ways and its storytelling is timeless. The things people criticize is because we’ve grown more cynical as a society and can’t accept fairytales and fantasy anymore. The updates Rachel’s talking about are ones we’ve seen to three different Snow White adaptions in the last decade and just showcase how limited we allow women to be now- they can only be strong in one way, only emote in others, and always be autonomous and in control no matter what, which totally defeats realism or creating any types of stakes. It puts more pressure on women to be perfect Mary Sues like the Snow White remake and I think both Lily’s Cinderella and Halle’s Ariel are even indicative of the box we put women in now as they both softened their characters considerably and took away their edge to create a perfect victim which is so troubling (in the case of Cinderella w her stepfamily and Ariel w triton). Again, OG Snow White is timeless. These “modern updates” will seem dated in a few years and will make all the productions seem faddish. I appreciate your perspective though and you are very kind and generous to everyone involved.

I completely agree, they want women to be perfect, but their view of perfection is so flawed. I agree on Ariel and Cinderella live action losing their edge. They wanted the characters to be right so bad. Like Ariel and Triton arguing, in the original, she made the mistake of saying she loved him, which made Triton break her stuff (which he immediately felt bad for. But live action made her say all the right things (like she was preaching morals to him), and he felt no remorse...so unrealistic and bad main character writing. She should still be flawed, that's what makes their reconciliation worth it in the end, they both need to learn, but the live action took that away. They took away every bad thing you could say about Ariel, but it made her less three-dimensional. I think this live action Snow White will be way worse though, they'll think she's perfect but she won't be...worse than Mulan

I can’t believe she expects to be paid for all the time that that photo is streamed somewhere on the internet. That’s not how it works.
Lily’s Cinderella was allowed to have emotions, and she didn’t have to save the day. She found power in forgiving, which doesn’t mean forgetting, but rather not letting someone else have the power over you.
Halle’s Ariel was definitely Girl Boss who magically had the ability to steer ships because she doesn’t need a man to save her…even though Ariel and Eric took turns saving each other in the original, like equal partners.

Like I’m so excited but so worried for this movie. I somewhat enjoyed the Snow White movie face off from a decade ago but neither were amazing. Wildly, the thing they both had going for them that this doesn’t seem to so far was visuals. Snow White and the huntsman? It’s dumb as bricks of a script, it’s trend hopping and throws a random chosen one narrative that it kind of abandons by it’s sequel that even that steals tropes and trends of the time. BUT! It had visuals and aesthetics, costumes and Ravenna camped it up on every scene. Mirror Mirror same thing, it’s a little convoluted at times it’s pantomimey but the costumes ugh so good. But both those and once upon a time (which is one of the better Snow White adaptations albeit messy and convoluted) do this thing where they’re like how do we make Snow White feminist? SWORD!
So all I ask at this point for this movie is please don’t girlboss her with a sword and armour and don’t for the love of all that’s holy don’t subvert the kiss please I beseech them. Do not have the prince kiss her and it not work for a statement we’ve had that it’s boring it’s done.

I feel like people vastly underestimate how hard it is to choose to be kind. Snow White grew up in terrible conditions and has every reason to be bitter and resentful towards the rest of her world. Instead, she chooses to be kind to everyone; from the evil queen who literally orders Snow's death because of extreme jealousy to the dwarves who are random strangers that live in the middle of a forrest.
When I was in middle school, I read Fruits Basket (manga) and idolized Tohru's patience and kindness to all the other characters (I personally think Tohru Honda is a good starting point for making a contemporary Snow White). I tried to emulate that being kind and really listening to people through my tween and teen years, and it got harder and harder each year because I felt like I was putting so much effort to engage with my friends but they were only half-listening to me at the best of times. I actually wrote my college application essay on this whole "choosing kindness" part of my life because characters like Tohru and Snow White made such an impact on me.

You really nailed it on the head, these remakes are regressive rather than progressive in their depictions of women. They act like all women need to be girlbosses, when many women don't care about that lifestyle and attitude.
I loved your idea for Snow White to be the daughter of a strong queen (checking the girlboss box), but not wanting that type of life for herself. I wish Disney would go that route because it would make Snow White a more three-dimensional and realistic character. I also love the idea about Snow White and the Prince having a plan for if the Queen kills her.

I don't get why people say it's "a kiss without consent", they both love each other and it has been made clear at the start she reciprocate his feelings when he sang for her, both of them are already established as lovers that could kiss at any moment should they decide to do it, that is consent, they are by no means strangers, but because this is animation things are SUPER rushed, but the message is there, is no one seriously ever kiss their dead love one as a final goodbye? I never did it myself because I'm scared of dead people (uncanny valley, you can't make something dead look alive with makeup) but I heard few instances here and elsewhere of people brave themself in sorrow and do it as a goodbye. But I agree, the prince should be crying when he kiss her since this is a final goodbye kiss type of funeral practice.
Edit: Or, the prince might have some unmentioned mental issue/incapable to crying if it's not private because he has been stoic in public his entire life, maybe people around him kept ignoring him emotionally by saying "boys don't cry" when he was a child. Anyway, people grief in their own way irl, but when it comes to film, you need to cry to show it.

Tommy: i think they should take some tips from the creator's of Once upon a time. That showed that snow white was a brat as a kid, believing that only royalty can wear crowns, and her mother told her that she needs to act more like a queen, before her death. They also explain why the evil queen hate her so much! She was in love and snow promise not to tell and she does, causing her love to be killed. The reason of the story is about snow's dad death, causing snow white to be on the run, and she meets the prince and they fall in love, and the seven dwarfs have actually characteristics including their usual ones, and they are named the same as in the Disney animated film. There is even a poison apple And the kiss works because the show has 7 seasons to flesh out snow white and her prince, so when the kiss happens, it feels more believable. Only thing is it's not really a musical! It reminds me alot of a mixer of Cinderella 2015 and Maleficent 2014 combined together into the story of snow white! I think you will like it!

Also some of the things she‘s said in interviews had nothing to do with what she was told by the pressteam of Disney & I still can‘t really stand behind that.
