It's nice here too. High of 15 degrees celsius and - 2 degrees celsius overnight on Friday. A really hard frost, my birdbaths were frozen solid. I use the same sizes you do for what you mentioned. Minus the meat. I've never canned meat. I have Bernardin, Ball, Mason, and Crown. Some were my Mom's and some have glass lids with the rubber seal with the wide galvanized bands. My 2 litres I use to store dry stuff. I use my Mom's Canning recipes and have found some of my own also. Bernardin has good recipes. I got sugar on sale as well. 1$ for a regular sized package. Got some vinegar for $1.47 for 4L. Great video! There's so much to learn and it's so rewarding. ☺
It's sure getting frosty, but I think we're headed for a bit of a warmer spell this week. Garden is still keeping me busy! lol Yes, all this sharing of information is great! I think I'm learning more from the comments than I'm actually teaching. It's a nice 2 way street!
If you ever can't find jars, look on candle wholesale websites. Most candle makers use mason jars. I get mine from candle science. They never ran out of jars.

A very helpful video. The jars we got are made in china. That's all there was. Haven't found any spare lids for them. We got better quality compost for the troughs for next year. I did something some dont recommend but with jams you can reuse jars and boil the lids. Then use golf wax to seal the top. Some jars of sauce come in jars that you can use new canning jar lids on.

Thanks Dona! No we don't happen to have Rural King up here unfortunately. We have Canadian Tire, Tractor Supply and Co-op. Co-op doesn't have ANY canning supplies at all! I was surprised!

In England we would say either 1 litre or 2 pints- we don’t really use quarts, gallons etc. Always interesting how different people use language. Really interesting video and loved the examples you gave as to why you’d use certain sizes, just what I needed 😊
That may well be the case, I have not tried and tested all to be able to say so. If the Ball mason book is FDA approved, then it may also come along with all the other mistakes the FDA has made in the past. We all need to do our own research to find out what is best for us.
Ball & Bernardin are the same company ( Bernardin is just the Canadian Brand Name ) they also make Kerr brand. So his Bernardin canning book is just as good :)
Thank you for your video. I have been canning for 1 year now. I want to pressure can some beans and franks in 4 oz, 1/4 pints and can not find how long to can them for. I do know that for pints, pressure can beans and franks for 75 minutes. I do know know how long for 1/4 pints for canning safely.
This was very informative,good job. I have been a grower for years but the canning is something I have only done once a long time ago. First batch of sauce this year I wimped out and froze. I have much to be processed and no more freezer space.😬

Northshore Preparedness I dehydrated a few peppers and cherry tomatoes a while back but was not to fussed on it. I need to bite the bullet! Or at least freeze the tomatoes until I want to make sauce. The thing that worried me was I only have a water bath canner and the recipes are all just plain,so when I made my sauce I got worried because it had more stuff in it that I would not can it right.

You know what Tricey, I don't think that would be safe. Typically when butter is canned it is just melted, put into the jars hot, and the lid is put on. The cooling will create a vacuum which will seal the jar. Usually when someone makes a butter sauce like garlic butter for example, it is typically frozen for storage. I wouldn't recommend pressure canning butter/butter sauce OR shipping it. You may find another source will offer different information on canning butter/sauce, but this is what I have for you. Maybe check the Ball canning website for more accurate info and recommendations.

I get my jars at the thrift shop. I have the coolest collection of all sizes and shapes. I ❤️ my thrift shop. Thrift shops are not as cheap as they used to be but you can find the COOLEST things if you have the time to browse.
You never showed that tiny jar up in the right corner. I have a Ball jar that small. I use it to put shots of vodka in so when I go on outings I just pour it in my OJ and just saved $10.00 from buying drink at vendors.
I have some of the small jars, I’ll be gifting some of my own vanilla salt in them. My jars are Italian and aren’t suited for pressure canning 😢, but they are really cute 💝.

I've had a difficult time understanding the difference in units. It seems that Americans invented their own sizes. An "Imperial Pint" is not the same as a "US Liquid Pint", so a pint is not a pint at the end of the day. Same for Quart measurements. Now I know why I'm confused.
I just had an epiphany at the beginning of the video during the weather segment of this program..... I fell asleep and forgot what that epiphany was. Darn it.
As an American I found this very unhelpful. We use ounces and all of the for sale ads list ounces not milliliters or cups or whatever. Sorry this was a waste of time for me. Also seems to be missing some of the special sizes

That was a good video. We are still having trouble finding jars. I have spent my day dehydrating. For that I repurposed store jars.

Yeah Cherrie, wax sealing is an old school thing but still used today. I have some wax on hand too.

@@bettinah.7429 Dehydrate the tomatoes and make tomato powder. Dehydrate the peppers and store them in jars or zip lock baggies.

1 liter is just slightly more volume (1.057) than one quart and one quart equals four cups.
