You touched the Elephant Ear plant. It's in the same family as taro. They are huge, and they give you huge rashes all over your body. They are in the arum and araceae family. They contain needle or arrowhead shaped crystals which contain calcium oxalate. Which when it touches your skin it causes irritation.
I LOVED this video! Not the part of Nikki having to go to the hospital (hope you are well healed), but just the casualness of this entire episode. It's like being there with you wandering around at a comfortable pace, and enjoying the surroundings. You guys appear so relaxed and happy.
Ah Jason, you are a lucky man my friend! You have an incredible partner in life. Love that girl! Both of you have such a great outlook on life. You are always positive and seeing the best in every situation. A great lesson for us all. Thanks for all your inspiration and insight into places in the world I may not have time left to get to! Stay safe and I will keep following your adventures.
That's how it all starts, then 27 short years later, twin daughters in college, and she starts taking notes while watching shows on daytime television about people who almost got away with killing their spouses....
I really like this, the occasional video that's less of an adventure agenda with planned highlights. Rather more of a day as it goes, close in, feels like you're right there, walking along to do one thing but taking it all in too.
We are full time RVers in the USA, but I absolutely love, love, love watching you two on your adventures. Your video, camera and drone skills are superb as well as your narration. I look forward to your videos every Sunday morning so I can travel the world through you two!!!
Nikki as a vegetarian I know you probably don’t carry Adolph‘s meat tenderizer on your boat, but in my days in the military we were taught in diving class that it was very good at breaking down protein based poisons from various sea creatures, insects and plants. Sprinkle some on a damp paper towel and apply to the affected area. I’ve only ever had to use it on bee stings but It worked great. Swelling and redness gone in thirty minutes to an hour..
Three things I loved about this episode. 1. The stare down with the horse and the dog on its back. 2. The kids playing in the dirt, and that adorable little boy. 3 The baby goats jumping. And to think that you guys are as entertaining as a TV show, and you interact with your fan base on a weekly basis. We are all in the middle of a historical change in media entertainment. Weird when you stop and think about it...
Nikki, just for giggles, I looked up taro and found that the needle-like hairs that caused your reaction are called "raphides", so I looked them up, too. I was surprised at the number of common plants, including some kinds of spinach, that have these little (and sometimes potentially lethal) things.
There ARE little miniature goats, and they’re about the size of a medium dog. I was so excited to see actual breadfruit growing! I’ve heard about it for years, it’s credited with saving many islanders from starvation. This was a great video, especially the plants and animals.
Hey Nikki, most plants that you can have an allergic reaction to or causes a itchy rash, has another plant near by, of which the sap can cure or at least clean the effected area...ie...poison ivy/oak can be cleansed/neutralized with the sap of the jewel weed plant who's stem is filled with a cleansing gel and is almost always near by. I sometimes pick it just to clean my hands.
Your video productions are of the best quality that I have seen anywhere on RUclips. I have followed you adventures on land and sea and you both deserve your own network series. The Travel Channel should be sending out offers if they have any taste at all!
No matter where you are, everyday SHOULD be lived like vacation-being present in your now moments as your true self, no baggage, bring blissfully in love with love-calm kind creative as a friend always says. It works. It’s like a secret everyone wants to know what you are knowing that makes you grin in that wow way- Thanks guys for reminding me how much I love the islands I miss them 🌴🎋
Nikki, You give hope to us confirmed bachelors that there are still wonderful women left. Always a smile no matter what the situation. Hope you get to feeling better, but at least you are in a beautiful part of the world. We have one of our winter Northerners blowing into Dallas today. Yesterday played golf in shorts, today North wind blowing. Take care and hope the itching stops.
Agreed, even when allergic to your own skin (LOL). As for the weather here in eastern canada, YUCK. We too get those nasty alaska blasts of cold air....
Mango sap from the stem of the fruit attaching it to the tree branch can be very irritating to the skin and cause crusts on your lips perioral area. Rub it off on the road or hard surface, then wash it off with water, and enjoy. The sap is also very bad for your clothing (spots).
Gone with the Wynns Been following you two since the RV days and a prime example of how a couple operates in harmony. I notice the little things that count. Fair seas, smooth breeze and stay safe. Forever a fan!
Having to get any kind of medical attention while traveling is always a challenge but this is next level! As always, the Wynn’s triumph and take it in stride. Thanks again for showing how to keep a great attitude while rolling with the punches. Lunch looked delicious, mini Swiss Army knife FTW and consultations plus meds for less than a state side copay! Glad you got medical attention sooner than later. Hope it healed quickly. Thank you for sharing the beautiful people of the island as well. Loving the baby goats!!
Confiture Bonne Maman(!) mon préféré hors faites maison. Wasn't expecting that over in French Polynesia, though I guess I should have. We have it here in Québec & it's awesome, especially la confiture d'abricot.
I absolutely love the positive vibe you guys carry through life and your videos! Something like a mystery rash when abroad can become a very bad day for anyone, even veteran travelers like yourselves. Thank you for another great video!
I found you guys recently and have been watching the episodes completely out of order. I loved this episode...it was about that desire to still explore even when you're a little sick and trying to take advantage of living in the moment. The seeds comment reminded of when I was a little kid and asked if I can eat the seeds. My grandmother told me that the plant would grow inside of me if I swallowed the seeds. One day, I accidentally swallowed a watermelon seed. I got so nervous and started crying. I was afraid my belly was going to burst when the watermelon started growing inside of me. (I was like 4.)
If you head over to the GWTW RUclips page, click on the video tab and it'll let you sort them in order if you'd like to watch that way. And thanks for sailing with us! Curious Minion
Tip: If you have hives or rash from an allergic reaction do not take a hot shower or bath....just cool water. Made this mistake only once with hives never again. Hope you never get a reaction again. Hello from Texas just outside Houston ( Katy, Texas).
Nikki, Glad you are okay! Your positive spirits and informational videos are always a treat to watch. Wishing you calm waters and lots of delicious sundowners!
Real fun following your story this morning. You two are always bubbly! 1 yr in French Polynesia... il faut apprendre le français. I'm sure you two will find a way 'cause you're great travellers. Bonne journée et merci de partager votre aventure. Ced & Kiki From Montreal, Canada 🇨🇦
For future skin irritation from plants we find that simplest and most effective product to keep on hand is actually called Ivy Off. It can be purchased online in the states. Order two packs and have people ship or bring it to you in future. Then it’s on hand for next time. It’s affordable and works like a charm!
Oooh! Allergic reactions can get worse quickly, so keep a close eye out for throat constriction. My wife got her first fire ant bite and after a visit to a minor emergency center and a steroid shot, her reaction continued to get worse. It took a second visit the next day and a second steroid shot, before she started to get better. Also, just FYI, once you have washed the plant oil off your skin, you can scratch all you want and you won't be spreading the area of irritation. The area of irritation may get larger due to you spreading the oils before you washed the oils off and due to how your body has different reaction times to the oils, but scratching the irritated areas will not contribute to its spreading once you have washed the plant's oils off. The blisters in the area of irritation will not cause further spreading if you scratch and burst them. It is not the plant's oils. However, scratching can lead to infections so rubbing or ice would be better relief from the itching. Knowing the above information seemed to psychologically make getting poison plant rashes much more bearable for me. Also, think of the plant oil as being like a smudge of motor oil on you. It takes scrubbing and something to break down the oil helps, like Dawn, or bleach. The oil can last more than a year on shoestrings, shoes, pet hair, etc. I'm not a MD, but plenty of experience. :)
I feel your pain, I am very sensitive to poison ivy and have had it multiple times in the last two years as we get it off our property. In regards to poison ivy at least, you do not spread it by scratching or breaking open the blister-like rash. It's the oil from the plant making you break out in multiple places and it can take days for all the rash points to develop which is why it seems like you did something to make it spread. Once you've showered and used soap to wash yourself, the oil is gone from your skin. Obviously this is not poison ivy specifically but my guess is the oil from this plant works sorta the same way (natures finds what works and sticks to it). Feel better soon.
To add to that, the Catch 22 is that the sooner after exposure to the oil that you wash/scrub with soap and water, the more the rash can be minor or avoided entirely, yet the rash sometimes doesn't appear until a day, or as you said, days after exposure. Best thing is to wear socks, sneakers, long pants and long sleeves when traipsing in an area where you're brushing against vegetation. It's limiting not being able to touch all the leaves and flowers also.
I fear poison ivy like crazy, but since I've started taking allergy pills for another allergen, haven't had another attack, after touching the plants accidentally or even one time waking up having camped in it.
Nikki, I know the pain and itch you feel. Although for a different reason. It is enough to bring you to tears but you keep such an upbeat look on life. Good and bad. I hope the drugs help you get over this quickly and relieve the itch. Alan
Niki is so cute. Even when the poor baby is hurting, she still has a great attitude. We forget how reliant we are on language, until I watch the two of you navigate simple things like a doctor visit, or buying items for lunch in a grocery store. It is also interesting to learn which plants are poisonous and which are edible. I hope those meds help Nikki recover. I got into a bunch of poison ivy years ago and remember how painful it was.
Rapid allergy health improvements to Nikki !!! It seems that you were attacked by jellyfish ... I have seen all your interesting videos, because I love your joy, art and all the care placed on their realization. Your films are also true symphonies of light and color, to which Cleo and Singa add a very special charm, whenever they enter the scene. Congratulations !!!
This Thanksgiving we are thankful for the both of you. The masterful ways you weave your stories and photography is to be compared to Parts Unknown. I know we will never see all the places and meet all the people you have met, but it makes us feel like we have. Thank you.
I love Nikki!! I can't not love her 😅 "Allergic to everything" and goes miles deep into the rain forest and jungles in Panama and Ecuador!! I'd do the exact same thing!! 👍
In some countries letting your cat roam outside your house will land you in jail and your cat will be put to sleep. People don’t realize that in some island nations a common house cat is actually at the very top of the food chain!
What a pair. Hope the medicine worked for you Nikki. Jason, never leave home with a knife. I carry one everyday and when we are hiking, I have a leatherman also. Great video. 😍
Poor Nikki! So sorry that happened! And it looks like it's going to be a battle . I guess for now it's "Tune in next week for another episode of Itchy in Paradise." ;-)
Great video as always, I dont really watch much vlogs on YT but yours are so entertaining and plus you hang around beautiful places! As a french guy, I must say its very funny to see you struggling to speak french, and the locals have a strong accent, so I get that it must be a real challenge, so good luck with that !
Hi, I am so sorry to see the suffering you went through. I can only give you great praise for the self control you must have had not to scratch. I have had a similar situation the itch was maddening for me. I did some gentle patting not scratching. It was awful. I could not understand exactly what you said. You said , if the rash was not better in a week .They told you to see a Dermatologist and or a D.T. Did you say D.T. AND WHAT IS A D.T. or did you say C.T. what is a C.T. ????????? signing off Scott's wife Vickie
Hope the allergy clears up speedily Nikki, I know how you feel I am similar with allergies touch the wrong plant and come out in a rash all over, and Medicine is not that far advanced as generally Doctors find it both hard to detect what the allergy is and how to treat it. Amazingly you aren't allergic to your lovely cats and likewise I'm not allergic to our wonderful Dogs. Fine Sailing and Fair winds
That little white flower you smelt is the Plumeria and is also known as the Frangipani, it grows well in the tropics. The genus is named in honor of the seventeenth-century French botanist Charles Plumier, who traveled to the New World documenting many plant and animal species.[5] The common name "frangipani" comes from a sixteenth-century marquis of the noble family in Italy who claimed to invent a plumeria-scented perfume,[6] but in reality made a synthetic perfume that was said at the time to resemble the odor of the recently discovered flowers.[7] Many English speakers also simply use the generic name "plumeria". Great video
It's possible that the flower at 22:30 may be a Tiare (or Tahitian gardenia). I think most plumeria have 5 petals, which are larger than the six petals on this flower.
Sorry for your discomfort Nikki. Deadly paradise, they could use another doctor. You earned that sundowner. Some of the most restful nights I've had were camping at the beach. The waves are very soothing. Thanks for sharing guys.
Pro tip #2 (also 2 yrs. too late) always carry Oreganol....its the best natural antibiotic there is. I've been telling Sailing Nahoa that for years. And Expedition Drenched...they were getting little infections all over the place. Get some .
How you two handle things like this....is pretty cool for the rest of us to try to do too. Glad it was minor (ok, no allergic reaction is "minor"). I wish my visit to the "ER" earlier this year was that inexpensive...still paying it off....the US has LOTS it could learn. Until next week...keep making cool videos!
The sign at 5:17 says: "For all healthcare matters, go around and speak to Therèse's secretary." So they did exactly what the sign says without knowing it 😂
The pictogram on the sign was well thought out. After all, when driving it means that you just see the exit of a one way road, so it was perfect for showing that you need to enter from the other side.
Coffee nerd again. Wow! I buy that same brand of jam in northern BC, Canada! Strawberry though! Loving the trip, your editing and production is wonderful. And you both are such lovely people. Thank you for taking us along on your adventure.
Ouch NIkki! You poor thing. irritable skin is maddening. You must have felt awful. I do hope you are feeling much better now. So many allergies Nikki - glad the Cats aren't a problem for you. Stay well both of you. Oh and I just wanted to say how much I love your Vlog presentations. Your time and patience with your editing really shows and you always tell a story. Thank you. It looks so professional. But then from a couple of Hollywood 'lookalikes' what do you expect :P Audrey Hepburn and a young lean Burt Lancaster :D Cheers you two. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
you two... are great diplomats for the USA... You are so welcomed by the locals where ever you go. Love you videos.. Capt’n Rick... STT BVI, now retired in MS, USA
Great job getting the accomplishment of feeling secure anywhere in the world where you plant your feet, is where you are, life it is what you make it be.
@Michael M. I agree totally. Nikki is so thin and fit. NO kids..She is too smart for that... Please do not ruin that body Nikki. All we have left is you. Sailing La Vagabond is becoming a fatty.
I can relate as I have a fatal allergy to Almonds. I have had 3 incidents over the past 20 years, and each one has a worse reaction. Now when I am in doubt I do without!
Nikki: "I'm allergic to pretty much everything, and I'm walking home from a hospital trip to treat an allergic reaction." *Oh, here's some strange exotic fruit we found on the side of the road, let's eat some!*
Wow! Never knew taro can cause such an allergic reaction. I have about 20 different taro plants in big pots on my patio outside at my home and have never had any reaction to them. I cut off the leaves and take the place the pots in the basement for the winter, then put them back outside in the spring again. Loved the music and the video.
@7:05 "Animals disembarked without proper authorization will be confiscated, euthanized and cremated at owner's expenses" O_o Please keep the cats aboard! will cat-sit for beer, cocktails and coffee .. :-)
I have allergies, but luckily I only end up sneezing. At about age 11 I had Excema, induced by what became my allergies. We have an automatic blood pressure machine, over the counter. My Garmin wrist band does SpO2 readings (Sats). That knife’s not so good at spreading jam! Nice kids sharing the Guava fruit.
great video, hopefully your doing better, it's really cool to see where Dr s an nurse's run the hospital unlike usa where hospitals an insurance an drug companies run the Dr's , take care be safe,
Very affordable! I work in the healthcare and that was good, especially in a foreign country. I’m glad you got medications. Those hives were wicked looking! Still my feel good Sunday video! Love you guys! As always be safe and be Well! 💕💕🤗😸
I would seriously look into home remedies! We often drink a glass of water with a teaspoon of activated charcoal for many things that come up. It help keep unnatural chemicals away also. It pulls out stuff from your blood stream thru the wall of your intestines. We use it for tummy aces infections & more. It can also be used directly in a poultice patch on the skin.
I know how you feel. I too am allergic to a lot of things (grass pollen, several tree pollens, dust mites, dogs, cats, etc.). Allergy season starts in January and ends in December. Someday I hope to travel the world and find new and interesting things to be allergic to. :)
Doctor and staff say "Duh .. we don't know what that rash is. You better travel over 700 miles to see a specialist and good luck in being able to see one within 6 months". If you don't believe this to be true ask anyone who lives in Canada or England. This is yet another example of 3rd world socialized medicine that the left wants to bring into this country
@@poruatokin I forgot that the left (as you are) cannot understand the unsaid message so I modified my original comment so that EVEN YOU can understand the message that I was getting across. Look in a mirror and you will see someone who is delusional and believes that one can get the best of something for nothing.
Loved every minute if your video - having lived and worked in countries that have limited resources I can appreciate the waiting for everything like seeing a Doctor. You truly are living in paradise which is rare these days. Enjoy, take care and looking forward to the next video. P.s apple cider vinegar seems to sort out most allergic reactions/skin rashes if your somewhere where there's no Doctor or Pharmacy Bye
This place reminds me of Colombia’s Caribbean Coast (when I visited there, it felt incredibly relaxing, no one ever seemed to be in a rush). Beautiful scenery, too.
I don't know if you are reading comments on a two-year-old video but the thing I want you to look into is something called L-lysine. It is made a difference for me with not getting kind of rashee feeling from eating too many peanuts or eating kiwis and it seems to keep the Poison Ivy from going blood-borne. Look into it see what you think and you can order it online. What you described in the video that sent you to the hospital is very similar to stuff that I had issues with before I got into this L-lysine.
Not so sure Canada got it right Jason, because inflation is on the rise as a resulting side effect and now by rounding up or down (extremely rare) things cost more when you can control the price. Considering your allergies Nikki my level of respect for you just keeps going up and up, and then factor in being vegetarian too; with being a yachtie! To help you with your hyper response to allergies you can try decaffeinated chamomile tea at night, just make it very strong/concentrated and sweeten it up with honey. If you didn't get the cream for the rash you could you baking power to make a paste too...?
Keep in mind the "rounding" only applies when you pay cash. Any type of card (credit, debit, gift, other) would be for the exact price. I think getting rid of the penny north of the border was a good thing. There was in interesting video I saw a little while back about the rationale for the US not transitioning their lower denomination bills over to coins, and was surprised to learn that the main issue is counterfeiting, which is easier to try to prevent with printed notes. (the increased rate of counterfeits would offset the savings by going with a more durable coin format, even after factoring in the differing cost of production and distribution)
You touched the Elephant Ear plant. It's in the same family as taro. They are huge, and they give you huge rashes all over your body. They are in the arum and araceae family. Apparently the active ingredient in Adolph’s is Papain, from the Papaya plant... you walked right past the cure!!!
Wow, you added to my life knowlege. This old lady is impressed! I put Vitamin E on everything. My No. 1 first aid. But I don't know everything.

Ditto. It totally sucks. It usually takes a couple of weeks for it to clear up.
Alan
oh my gosh that does not look like fun AT ALL! but SO admire your attitude about the whole situation and the ability to keep smiling!!!!
Sunday morning breakfast with the Wynn's. Hope you're feeling much better by now Nikki.
Hope you're doing better NIkki
I am loving those sunglasses Nikki! Where can I find a pair?
Praying for your recovery Nikki.
AND WHAT IS A
D.T. or did you say C.T. what is a C.T. ?????????
signing off Scott's wife Vickie
Sorry, I did say dermatologist. The doc wanted me to go to Tahiti if things didn't improve. Thanks for watching!
No sorry it's not a Plumaria/Frangipani that has a yellow center and five leaves. It is a citrus flower.
@@jimb6208 yes Gardenia. I have some of those here in hawaii
Not hating, but so much for long, well thought out,m fact filled responses, lol.
@@gregh7457 Thanks Greg. I'd bet the farm it is a Tiare / gardenia. And for sure it ain't a 'citrus flower'.
Sorry for your discomfort Nikki. Deadly paradise, they could use another doctor. You earned that sundowner. Some of the most restful nights I've had were camping at the beach. The waves are very soothing. Thanks for sharing guys.
Pro Tip: (2 years late) The heel of the baguette can be used as a spoon. especially if its crusty bread.
The sign at 5:17 says: "For all healthcare matters, go around and speak to Therèse's secretary."
So they did exactly what the sign says without knowing it 😂
😂🤣
The pictogram on the sign was well thought out. After all, when driving it means that you just see the exit of a one way road, so it was perfect for showing that you need to enter from the other side.
Good eyes
Ric Baker I swear I was thinking how much she looked like Audrey Hepburn while reading replies!
you two... are great diplomats for the USA... You are so welcomed by the locals where ever you go. Love you videos.. Capt’n Rick... STT BVI, now retired in MS, USA
When traveling, I like to keep a pair of chopsticks on me. Easy to use. Easy to clean. Easy to carry/stow.
And lethal in the right hands....
and incapable of cutting bread :)
and the most inefficient thing one can use to take food from a plate to your mouth, why not use a tweezers?
You two are going to be the coolest old couple ever! I hope you are still doing videos in 50 years.
What a great channel!!❤️ I look forward to it every Sunday.
Great job getting the accomplishment of feeling secure anywhere in the world where you plant your feet, is where you are, life it is what you make it be.
Omg... For a moment there I thought you two were going to announce something... Totally different 😅
David Stewart I guessed baby or she got bit by a critter
I was going baby...
@Michael M. I agree totally. Nikki is so thin and fit. NO kids..She is too smart for that... Please do not ruin that body Nikki. All we have left is you. Sailing La Vagabond is becoming a fatty.
No way a baby would fit into their lifestyle ever.
When you first start to get rash put mud on it and let it dry all the way might have to do twice. Works on ivy and oak. Heard it also works on taro.
At 22 that was Passion Fruit- in Hawaii we call it Lilikoi- (Lee Lee Koi) and the flower is a Plumeria.
We love passion fruit!
I can relate as I have a fatal allergy to Almonds. I have had 3 incidents over the past 20 years, and each one has a worse reaction. Now when I am in doubt I do without!
"I'm allergic to everything!" - tries strange new fruit
Hope that you get well soon. Take care and safe travels
Nikki: "I'm allergic to pretty much everything, and I'm walking home from a hospital trip to treat an allergic reaction."
*Oh, here's some strange exotic fruit we found on the side of the road, let's eat some!*
Nice kids sharing the Guava fruit.
great video, hopefully your doing better, it's really cool to see where Dr s an nurse's run the hospital unlike usa where hospitals an insurance an drug companies run the Dr's , take care be safe,
Big time, that same trip here would have been at least $1000. Sad.
And wait all day to be seen
Love the new format! Hope you’re better, Nikki!
That Papaya looked like it was about to say "Feed me Seymour!!"
I vote for Goat on the ⛵.
Sorry about the hospital visit Nikki. I enjoyed the local footage of the people, animals and plants of the island. Great video.
Did anyone notice that the nurse put the blood pressure cup directly over the rash?
No broken skin = no big deal
I would be worried about the next person that put the blood pressure cup on if the rash is leaking
@@TheFiscallySound Poor deluded soul
CUT a baguette with a knife ? Just rip off a chunk !
19:14 Common name of this plant in USA is "elephant ear plant." It grows from a tuber in the soil that looks similar to the taro root.
That's not a knife! ...seemed obligatory :) To me, those kinds of lunches are the best kind.
I love how you both always find the positive in every situation!👍👍
I'm actually surprised this hasn't happened more often to you given your tendency to jump head-first into new things.
This place reminds me of Colombia’s Caribbean Coast (when I visited there, it felt incredibly relaxing, no one ever seemed to be in a rush). Beautiful scenery, too.
Yup, prescription antihistamine when travelling, you will never be able to take what the locals can!
Wonderful, enlightening, educational. You guys are awesome cinematographers!
It was cheaper to see the doctor & buy the meds than it was to buy fruits and vegetables.
But did the pharmacy have kitty litter??? 😜🤣
Imagine having to find goat litter
I kind of feel your pain Nikki. I have had to deal with having a daughter who has a wide variety of allergies. The worst is direct sunlight though.
Hope you are well Nikki. Cute baby goats.
