I have a customer that I cut once a week and their yard looks like this every week... I swear I have never seen grass grow so fast... He did say when he first moved there that he fertilized it every week... But still, you would think that fertilizer would be gone by now... I dont mind... Good people and I love cutting grass... Its addicting... As Hank Hill once said "Why would anyone do drugs, when they can just mow a lawn"

Flippin Fast I mow a yard that hasn't been cow pasture for nearly 35yrs, still grows 3-6inches a week even it it's drought. All the time it was pasture by a barn the ground soaked up the nutrients and now with a soil sample those nutrients will take decades to dissipate. It's estimated since the farmer probably never cleaned the area out, there's 4-6ft of composted manure above where the ground level was. 93yrs ago when the dairy barn was originally built.

Now that my dad has been getting older and is sick often and my brother is always a no show when we need him to help around the house, I've started learning to do things my dad wouldn't normally allow me to do so I could be helpful. this video is simple but I learned a lot by watching and your explanations were quick. For some reason my yard gets tall like this a few times over the course of the season. 2:25 Instead of bagging right away I will side discharge with a high deck on the first pass. Then make a second pass with the bagger unit on and with a lower deck. It's amazing how quickly the cut grass dries between passes which leads to a dramatically lower volume of bagged clippings.

My grass was like that because I didn’t buy a mower. But I’ve been every 5 days slowly cutting it down and bagging it. The person that owned my house before would let it go and when they cut the grass it left clippings everywhere. The clown even had the mulching side towards the house so wet tall grass flew all over my house. Rookie if you asked me. But I’m thankful for you’re tips because it’s helped a lot. Getting my edge back to my grass being healthier.

Dan Great video, I would only comment that reaching into the mower, through the bagger area, is a very bad thing to show on-line. You obviously know how to do it correctly, but I think your instruction video would be better made turning the mower off before every bag removal, either to empty the bag or clean the mover. There are many people out there that don't have a clue with regard to safety. Even if your mower has a protection flap, many other mowers, especially older mowers may not. God forbid, someone watches this video and replicates what you are doing with an older mower and gets hurt! Otherwise, great video! I like your videos using zero turn mowers. As a home owner, who just bought one, and searched on-line for how to / best practices, I like them. I especial liked the video with the doubled blades, crossed in an X to double mow it.

The grass was up to my waist in places, and with all of the rain this year, my zero turn did nothing but dig trenches. It took 2 full days of weed eating to get it done enough to push mow. The mowing took another full day, but the results are Definitely worth it.

When grass is tall and/or wet, you must walk slower and overlap a bit more. I have the Honda HRX mower and use the wheel height dogs (plastic deck protrusions) as the path alignment guides. The dog aligns with the previous track's wheel track. You need to lift the grass pressed down by the wheels!

-- Yeah, I've seen a lot worse in my own lawn. Having been a groundskeeper at a Country Club for 6 years when I was young, I know a thing or two. Let me start with some equipment tips:
    1) Notice the 'personal pace' style drive system on Dan's mower. NEVER buy a mower with that system. It's bad on your wrists, flimsy and hard to control on grades up or down.
    3) Avoid front wheel drive systems at all costs. They're more complicated, and when you RAISE the front of the mower up to turn it, you lose all drive power to the system. Rear wheel, or all wheel drive only.
    2) Make sure your blade is properly sharpened and balanced. This is as easy as using a drill, bench grinder, or rotary grinder. Sharpen your blade (plenty of RUclips videos out there) and make sure it's balanced. This is as easy as hanging the main bolt hole on the center of the blade on a nail sticking out of a wall. If it droops to one side, it's not balanced. Note: There are much better ways.
On to cutting long wet grass.
    1) DO NOT START BY BAGGING. The grass is long, wet, and will gum up in the bag. This is important because the bag requires vacuum force to catch the grass, that means the bag needs to breathe. Your CFM is crippled by wet grass in the bag.
    2) Do not raise the deck above normal cut height (Unless the grass is obscenely long) This will give you less of a polished product in the end, but we'll get to that in a minute.
    3) Start by shooting the grass (side discharge). Start from the center and work your way out. You will keep cutting the grass you've already cut. This is important for 3 reasons: It 'shakes' a lot of the dew/water from the cut grass, making it easier on the bag for later, and also acts like mulching as you continually cutting already cut grass. Finally starting from the inside, you have better control of where those clippings are going - important for later.
    4) As I said, don't raise the deck. If it's that long, take half swaths as you mow. Keeping the deck at the same height is important for cut quality in the next step.
    5) Walk away from the lawn, when you're done with it, take a break. Literally. Why, it's going to give that moisture a little time to evaporate.
    6) Now throw the bag on. If you started from the inside, then you've controlled the clippings, moving them to the outside. Do your perimeters around the boarders of the lawn, might take a couple times, as most of the grass is here. Remember to shake the back of the bag - it's still going to be wet. Note: Not raising the deck, has given you a better chance for a uniform cut on your second, bag cut.
    7) If you mowed your first cut for example, east to west, mow your second cut, north to south.
Your done. You want to hose out the bag, and the mower deck, and leave the bag in the sun. When it's dry, shake out all the dust so the bag can breathe again. There's a lot more, but that's a good procedure to get long wet grass with a cheap mower.

Looking at this from you angle I now realise that when I was cutting long grass with my push mower I would always set my lawn mower at a higher deck height And the reason my MTD lawn tractor was only flattening the grass and not cutting the grass was that I was setting the deck height of my lawn tractor on 2. I since found that on the higher deck setting on long grass it cuts better So from now on Ill set the deck to 5.

My backyard got out of control when I was away from home for awhile, it was even taller than this video but I was able to get it back to rights without using a bag or a side discharge and the mower didn’t stall. I’ve got an Ego battery operated push mower. On it’s highest setting I’ve found that it’s even higher than most gasoline mowers. I cut it on the highest setting, then, waited about a day or two for freshly cut tips and cuttings to dry out in the sun. After they dried out, it was just about as tall as normal. I lowered the cut to my normal setting and it was finished. Best thing was that afterwards it looked great! Maybe the roots got more established from growing really tall? I’m not sure but the Ego mower actually mowed it down. I was seriously thinking that I would have to hire someone as it was WAY higher than normal.

I had 1 client a long time ago ask me to cut her house all she can afford is 30 bucks, I told I can do what I can for 1 hour for 30 bucks I mow around the whole house it looked ok. it was a square around the house the client was happy :-) The grass was taller the her house never seen anything like that at the time its all good Dan keep up those great videos :-)

when yards are that over grown i either go over it with a weed whacker to lower it to a 4 cutting height or i go over it slow with my new troybilt tb280 es mower multiple times to not scalp it/let clumps sit on the yard as i know what most yards by me need to be cut at (4-5 cutting height for the front & 4-5 cutting height in the back) & i very rarely scalp it even with all this rain we have been getting in florida(5"+ in 4 or so days) but one thing you can do if you don't have a side discharge or bag that you can use a rope to hold up the flap until you get one but be careful with rocks & you will be ok til you can get either ones.. great videos dan.. ;)

why cut so low? you are killing the grass cutting it so low when its that tall. you need to progressively cut it shorter, or youre going to wind up with a brown lawn. general rule of thumb is to not cut any more than 1/3 of the growth. with the cut height for most grass being 2.75" -3.25 depending on preference.

Everyone please only follow his recommendation of mowing at the highest your mower will go.
The soonest you should mow is 1-2 days later at the exact same full highest setting.
Then lower the mower down a setting and mow 3 days later.
Wait 1-2 days and then mow at that same setting.
Continue with this process of lowering and mowing until you are at the height you want.

    • @weignerg
      @weignerg 3 года назад

And this is still faster than you should probably lower the height of the grass in a healthy manner.
