Remote locks on the front door, move the cashiers closer to the door. or return to the old style revolving doors to really slow their escape. Maybe return to the days when store security could actually stop a thief from leaving the store without have to worry about being charged by some asshat DA?

The real problem is the security guards are legally barred from doing anything. In the state of Washington, an unarmed security guard cant put hands on a thief, can't grab stolen merchandise out of thier hands, can't block the door. And the Seattle police department has no support from the city. Its under strength, under funded, and the city council won't let them do their jobs. The the guards cant do anything, and the cops have too much to do so they wont show for 30 minutes unless someone is dead. And the criminals know this. So yeah, walk in, grab stuff and walk out.
Im all for police accountability, but they and the guards need to be able to actually stop petty crime.

Dude it's a terrible idea to suggest no more window shopping. Stores would loose more going this route than they loose from theft for sure.
As a former high end retail manager, you 100% correct. Arresting shoplifters and charging them for their crimes will stop 95% of this nonsense. The stores I worked at had civilian and police security teams. We still had shoplifting, but not a whole lot.
Seattle is the only state i no that took over 2 police station and ran the chief and all the officers out for months now that's too crazy

I believe that law enforcement should have to continue their education every year starting with the constitution and pass a test.

Well, it only took Washington state almost a half-decade to figure out shoplifting is bad.
But this is not some grand win on their part. it shouldn't have happened in the first place. There are no pats on the back for just the attempt to reach parity.

as for your solution...Im much more incredulous. Brick and mortars already have problems with getting people in the doors with online shopping being as it is. if all your doing is turning your store into a online store pickup, then you might as well just sell out to Amazon in some form, because your not competing with the titan of online sales directly.
Not to mention, this type of shoplifting is not a nationwide epidemic. It is a symptom of states and cities with very weak enforcement of shoplifting/larceny statutes. I think you know this, you mention it almost every time you cover this kind of story.

Depends on the crime. Should a person be held without bail for 6 months awaiting trial for "crime" that has a maximum penalty of 90 days? Should a person be held without bail for years awaiting trial for a crime that has no penalty of incarceration? Before you spew BS about absolutes, you need to see the whole picture. For cases involving violence, assault, murder, rape, etc... I am all for a mandatory no bail. But for any other crime, bail must be given, and given promptly. In fact, judges should have no say in bail amounts. This is your crime, this is your bail, period.
