I'm a 34 year old stay at home mom and you have helped me fix a riding mower, a push mower and now my weed eater. This time last year I knew nothing about any of these machines. Now I'm doing all my own repairs and it is so fun!
Just tried this on my Bolens Bl100 31cc trimmer and it worked great! It never would accelerate before without dying. I've taken the carb and plug out about but could not fix this annoying issue. I gave the set screw a turn and bam! She screams now!! Thank you for this video
Thank you so much! I got a Featherlite brand-new and it didn't run right. Knew it was a fuel problem but not how to fix it. Ordered the tool today so I'll have it. In the meantime, I used a piece of 1/4 inch polyethylene tubing for my swamp cooler to adjust the screws. Worked perfectly! When I get the tool I'll make sure both my Weedeater products are tuned properly. You saved me having to take it in for repairs or having to buy another string trimmer.
I have the FL26 and after watching this video, ordered the carb. adjustment tool. I received the tool promptly and just went outside to try it out. Guess what? It worked, and I've never adjusted a carburetor in my life. Thanks again donyboy73. Well worth the $7.00 I paid for the tool. :)
Thank you so much for your informative videos. In todays economy you are doing a great service for those of us that cannot afford a repair bill. I was able to get my weedeater working much better than when it was new !! Thanks for your info about the splined tool to make the adjustment.
Donny boy 73 your awesome! You help me fix my snowblower, weedeater and leaf blower..your very detail oriented and good camera work makes it easy! Thanks pal keep up the good work!
I've looked at a lot of very crappy videos before finding this one. I have the exact same weedeater with the exact same issues. I took the carb apart and thoroughly cleaned it. All gaskets and fuel lines looked perfect. After seeing your video I'm confident I can fix mine. Now...if only I could find that tool locally.
your videos are awesome because you are step by step and to the point. I can't stand videos that are like 30 minutes just to show a 4 minute process. some people babble on and on. shut up and get to the point. nobody cares about anything that's said other than what they came to research. so thanks again for having the best videos.
Your videos are great and to the point. I only watch three people who teach and you are one of them. All of you seem to actually care about the accuracy of the info you present.
You are very good. Your instructions are very clear.. just like an instructor. My Homelite weed trimmer was having similar issue (i.e. only choke run) and I was able to fix it following your instruction. Thanks for saving me money and empowering me. Keep doing good work !!
Awesome. I have one of these. Even new, it didn't run very well. Lately it's been acting like it was starving for fuel (which it was). Even after a carb rebuild, it would rev and then die when I switched to middle choke. I used a small hammer to tap a piece of 3/16 aluminum tubing from the hardware store over the splines on the adjuster screws. A couple of minutes adjusting and it runs like a champ. Thanks!
Just did this myself a couple days ago. Here's a few GREAT tips for adjusting these darn anti-tamper bleeds. I used a blue electrical connector pushed over the splines. The plastic is soft enough to grip them and hard enough to turn them. For a more permanent and easy adjustment method, turn them out with the connector all the way, and use a dremel cut off disc to machine a slot for a screwdriver. I also saw a screwdriver glued to a female electrical connector to make a screwdriver version!
in answer to the other comment: I think theres a great mix of basic entry level information and more intermediate or advanced repairs. I enjoy them all!
Much Thanks! My FL20C runs great after applying the tuning shown in this video. Cost 7 dollars for the tool. Cracked open the low side enough to get it to idle then fine tuned the low at idle and high at WOT. Thank You!
Thank you very much for your help. I managed to fix my machine. I managed to finish the job. I hope to keep making more videos that are very helpful for us.
I did this on my Bolens T100 trimmer, and I was able to save it, I also had to install a fuel line kit which includes all lines, fuel filter and squeeze bulb. Way easier than I'd have ever expected.
Having this exact problem before and after having rebuilt carburetor wit new carb kit. Guess I need to order me a carb adjusting tool too. Thanks for the video!
thanks a lot. I was having issues with my ryobi not starting. I cleaned the carb and got it to start but would not idle. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to adjust the idle other than stupid phillips screw that did nothing but I found your video and those two screws (which I saw but didn't realize what they were. Now it is running like new. THANKS!
Thanks BRO I was having thats same problem. I didn.t know you can adjust those two screw. I called HOMELITE customer Service and he didn't even mention that. I really highly appreciate your vid. Thanks again my weed eater is working on RUN switch again.
My weed eater brand trimmer has no choke, only the primer bulb. Used to start kind of hard originally but one warm runs all day if needed ! Now it starts about as easy as an old stubborn mule! Usually about 30 pumps of the primer bulb to get it going maybe, 40 or 50! Dead serious ! I think its just a junky build , gonna look it over once more see if fuel line is kinked or such! Great video though ! Thanks
I bought one of these new 10 years ago. Ran for a couple days then quit. Hard start, would not idle or rev up. Installed a new carb last week with same results. Long story short, the muffler had clogged with unburned fuel/oil. Muffler exhaust ports are about the size of an aspirin and screened in. Ran kero through it in the parts washer and problem was cured. Had this happen with mud-wasps once too (nested inside the exhaust port of a homelite weed whacker).
I don't hear you say this in the video, but I see you mention it in the comments: start with low and high screws at 2 turns out, then snug down. That worked for me on the Ryobi 725r I've just disassembled and reassembled: low is now at 1.75 turns out, high at 1.5 turns out, idle at 2.5 turns in. The low and high screws seem to be sensitive to even 1/8th turn either way -- this is the first carb I've taken apart and tuned, I didn't know any of this a week ago. :-)
Mine ran good for about 1 season them refused to idle without choke on , opened up low about 1/2 turn now it's good as new. I just used a dremel cutting wheel to put a slot in for a reg screw driver, drilled into carb a little but no biggie.
I normally set Husqvarna, Stihl etc with both jets set at 1.5 turns out from being fully screwed in. Normally at these settings the engine will start and you have to adjust from there. Mind how tight you screw them down though or you might be left with a broken of bit of needle being jammed in the jet in a place you won't be able to get at. Hope this works. Good luck.
thanx alot too i am a mechanic i work on cars but i recently started working on a chane saw and a weed eater but every time i start it it dies so i looked u up and BANG! it worked thanks alot now i undersatnd it
I had to start and run the engine off of propane until I was able to adjust the screws to a point where it would run on its own, then I did the "high" adjustment. These carburetors don't do well with even tiny particles in the passageways. I took this carb apart last year and it worked fine until this year. Do you recommend running the engine out of gas at the end of the season? Do you know if alcohol or lacquer thinner will deteriorate the gas tank, lines or gaskets if you run it through?
Super video!! 6 stars. I noted that one gentleman already knew how to adjust a carb on a 2 stroke, but I still have a couple questions. Are the high and low adjusting screws always labeled? If not, how can u differentiate between the two? Is there a rule that u go by as to which one to adjust first? Thank you for including the part # and place to get the adjusting screwdriver. Thanks for sharing you're vast knowledge with us!!!
@donyboy73 I ordered on about 10 minutes after I left that comment, I got it for a total of $8.90 so it wasn't too bad. I got a brand new Weed Eater SST25 and you can't even rev it or it will stall because of the factory settings.
Great video, I rebuilt this same carb. and when I blew the parts off I found a couple of clear looking seals that came loose. But it runs good, one big problem the primer bulb is giving me problems it don't fill with gas like it should and the the primer bulb will colapse. How do you solve primer bulb issues? Thanks Steph.
I have the JD C 1200 string trimmer and there are plastic caps where the low and high speed screws are. One is red and one is white, and because they have little “fins” on them, they only allow slight adjustments. Can I remove them w/o breaking anything?
I used to have a weedeater SST25, I readjusted the carb but I didn't have the tool, So I drilled a pocket in the adjustment screws so an Alan key could fit to adjust the carb lol it worked good, but not something I'd recommend. Cool video though ! thumbs up
I have this exact weedeater and found all your info spot on and easy to follow, however, I have a problem you did not cover in you videos. I cannot get gas to pump into the bulb. I have checked and changed the lines and filter, cleaned the carburator, checked the bulb for cracks and dont k ow what else to check. can you give me some further information on this problem.
+donyboy73 Just a tip if you have a poulan 25cc 16-18' cut they are literally the same thing as the weedeater here. I work in a small engines shop and they are 100% the same
hey man great vids. could you please, please, please do a vid on how to clean the muffler on a featherlite fl20c. housing looks rather tricky and it looks like i'm gonna have to take the housing completely off.i sure don't want to mess it up since it's fairly new. again thanx for the vids.
I got the tool but can seem to get this string trimmer to run. I have screwed in both the H and L speed needles all the way and backed out 2 turns as per the Zama instructions. I prime the bulb 10x per start up procedure and pull 5xs on full choke then move to the mid choke position and fuel just sputters out of the throttle throat. Are my gaskets shot on the carb?
what are the intail adjustment turn outs for both screw i start from 2 turns out and i can get it to idle fine but when i give it gas and try adjusting the high screw it bogs out no matter what adjustments its at the motor keeps bogging out by the way i have the same trimmer as in the video thanks.
I have a poulan PPB250E trimmer I just bought of ebay last week used the seller told me that It won't stay on will stall and it does that when I pull the throttle could it need adjusting. Also I have a Weedeater MX550 it looks just like the trimmer in the video. Its been sitting for years I just bought parts for it weeks ago the carburetor makes bubbles and the primer bulb won't hold gas the carb is stopped up tried cleaning it still the same thing should I buy a carburetor it does still runs
Good video quick question I have an Echo handheld blower it does that same thing from your video where you try starting it and turns on for 3-5 seconds then it dies why can it be I checked filters plug is good
What do you do when the filter falls off? I have a homelite back back blower that I ripped out the gas return line back to the tank. I guess it recycles the gas thats not burnt back to the tank. It runs fine until it is fully warmed up and then it starts bogging down and then racing repetedly with no solution that I could figure. I tried adjusting the high and low but the seemed to already be set all the way out from the factory. Any ideas?
i just bought a new poulan pro which is similar to weedeater...i never used a gas trimmer before...i noticed my head was not a bump n go one...it seems to be all metal with a pre-cut string about 10 inches going thru 2 holes on the metal head...i thought every head has to have a roll of string , not just a short string...
Yes helpful info indeed. I have both a Homelite and a Troybuilt. Each requires a different tool. Maybe this is true for all brands? Anyway, the Troybuilt is good for now. The Homelite needs this adjustment. I only saved it for it for a spare. So I hate to spend $30 bucks for a tool. Anyone have any suggestions for a make sift tool? Rotlerin's advice is way more than I want to get into.. Thanks in advance.
Hi. What i normaly do is turn bothe screws completely in and 1 to 1,5 turn out from there. it should run not super find ( bot sometime does!!) But it easier finetuning from there without having to pull 100 times. A question: What is the tool called? Got repairs on a Macculloch chainsaw today and it had the same non slotted screws in is. I was totaly pissed becouse i had to take the airfilter off screw the carb back on without the filter and adjust it with needlenose pliers.
Hi, I have a mantis tiller. I know now from watching your great videos that I need to put a carb kit on the machine. The other issue I have is that even after replacing the gas lines ,the top line leaks if I have the gas cap too tight,it will siphon fuel out of the tank.Im wondering if i need to trim the hose shorter ? I am at my wits end ! Please help !!
I just bought a Echo SRM 230 and its not revving as high as i thought it would. My old weed eater (feather light plus) seemed to rev way higher. is there something wrong? Thanks!
mowtownusa has a four piece carb adjustment tool set that has the "single D", the "double D", the "Pac-Man" , and the "Splined" tool all together for $40.00. How often do you need the single D and double D?
Don't know if anyone mentioned it already, but these adjustments should be done with the cutting accessory on, clean air-filter, and fresh fuel. If the sparkplug shows carbon, you may want to check the exhaust port as well. If you adjust with a dirty air filter, and later change it or clean it, you will run lean. If you have access to a tachometer to compare with recommended manufacturer data, even better.
i have a problem can you help me ? i have a stihl fs 85 and when i start it it starts fine but doesn't have all the power and when i let go it dies how can i fix the power
Dave GB How long was the unit stored before you tried using it again? Was it stored with fuel in the tank? What oil are you using? Look at your fuel filter and fuel lines condition, maybe there isn't enough fuel passing through the lines when idling. Check the air filter and sparkplug condition, and exhaust port for carbon buildup. Make sure you're using a high quality 2-stroke oil like Shindaiwa Red Armor, it has additives that will clean up your engine, and will keep the fuel fresh for up to 2 years (in a proper fuel container). If all the above are ok, then we can begin playing with the carburetor adjustment.
Rico Suave i used i every end of the month i think the fuel lines are i just washed the carburateur when i pull it a few times and then remove the spark plug i see that there is oil on the spark plug is that ok?

These carb adjustments are exactly what my bolens mtd tiller / cultivator needed to keep from stalling. Thanks!
You are the man! these adjustment made my Poulan Pro Blower blow leaves like it did when it was a young lad again, thanks!
You are very good. Your instructions are very clear.. just like an instructor.

i'm actually posting a video tommorrow morning on this tool and where to get it, so come back in the morning

You are da man!!!!!! Fixed my weedeater right up with the turn of a screw!!!
Thank you for the video, used it and got the weedeater going. Very good video, not too detailed but covered everything needed!
I bought one of these new 10 years ago. Ran for a couple days then quit. Hard start, would not idle or rev up. Installed a new carb last week with same results. I need the air filter cover, mine is broke ! And a brush trimmer blade ! I like how the head is easily removed on these, thanks for the cab tips 😊
This is exactly the problem with my Weed Eater. Exact same model too. Thanks for the carb. tool tip donyboy73. :)
I don't hear you say this in the video, but I see you mention it in the comments: start with low and high screws at 2 turns out, then snug down. Great Stuff! Once again. I can't believe you give all this free advice. It would seem you'd sell your business short. I certainly appreciate it!
Thanks for video. I cut some grooves in it to use a flat tip screwdriver. Didn't have time to buy the specialty tool.
Good video! Thanks for sharing what you know. I probably need that tool you mentioned. Mine runs but won't stay running. Thanks again.
Mine ran good for about 1 season them refused to idle without choke on , opened up low about 1/2 turn now it's good as new. I just used a dremel cutting wheel to put a slot in for a reg screw driver, drilled into carb a little but no biggie.
@JanitorIsBack glad i could help
A very informative video, thank you for the effort you took to make it!
Thanks for the tips... mine is runing slow, already did a cleaning.......
@adrienj67 yes it could, so prime it throught he carb with gas or quick start, i use flammable penetrating oil. run it until it clears itself
Another great Video, Very informative and good camera shots....Keep em coming
I normally set Husqvarna, Stihl etc with both jets set at 1.5 turns out from being fully screwed in. Normally at these settings the engine will start and you have to adjust from there. That was was missing in the video; the basic settings. Thanks
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
the odd time you need but not very often but you will be happy to have it even if you just need it once
@vinceleto always keep the return lines. and maybe clean the carb
thanx alot too i am a mechanic i work on cars but i recently started working on a chane saw and a weed eater but every time i start it it dies so i looked u up and BANG! it worked thanks alot now i undersatnd it
Your the best! I save so much time and money with you! Thank you!
@donyboy73 That's Great! I'm happy to hear it!
@frasatat2 thanks for the tip, but i make sure they r super clean before installation
A great video!
Only comment I’d like to make is not to put screwdriver into plug hole when testing for spark. Just on body.
@donyboy73 I ordered on about 10 minutes after I left that comment, I got it for a total of $8.90 so it wasn't too bad. I got a brand new Weed Eater SST25 and you can't even rev it or it will stall because of the factory settings.
Thanks for this video. You helped save my WeedEater.
@th19940305 u can probably solder it or mail it back to them for a replacement. that happened to me once
Very helpful, nice background from factory, now I'll make adjustments in that order; thanks
I have the JD C 1200 string trimmer and there are plastic caps where the low and high speed screws are. One is red and one is white, and because they have little “fins” on them, they only allow slight adjustments. Can I remove them w/o breaking anything?
@joshua76az it's the poulan tool that has a splined end
i agree...he does an excellent job
Good instructional video, my strimmer only has 1 carb adjustment screw, what do i do for mine?
Hey sir,did you just replaced the gas?too,so that's how you service.wow! Thank you...
That is exactly what my machine does except its a Husqvarna, with about 13 years on it. I will have to try this out next time i go and use it.
Barbara Rowlett you may want to replace the carb kit
+donyboy73 Just a tip if you have a poulan 25cc 16-18' cut they are literally the same thing as the weedeater here. I work in a small engines shop and they are 100% the same
Guy you are awesome, i called their support because i lost the instructions funny enought they couldn't tell me how to turn it on lol
The carb is a zama ,and the bulb as well as the whole carb, has new parts. Thanks for any replies.Need help on this one.
@Christopheranheather u may want to replace the carb kit too
i have been tinkering with in a lil latley seems to have changed how it ran because of the weather so i will go and mess with it a little more
my have the same problem where can I get that tool for adjust the carburetor? and now it won't start.
hey man great vids. could you please, please, please do a vid on how to clean the muffler on a featherlite fl20c. housing looks rather tricky and it looks like i'm gonna have to take the housing completely off.i sure don't want to mess it up since it's fairly new. again thanx for the vids.
Thanks, your videos are awesome.
Thanks. Just got mine running again.
@XxLegitxxGamingxX approx 1 turn i think, u can start at 1-2 out and work from there on adjusting it
I have a poulan PPB250E trimmer I just bought of ebay last week used the seller told me that It won't stay on will stall and it does that when I pull the throttle could it need adjusting. Good video quick question I have an Echo handheld blower it does that same thing from your video where you try starting it and turns on for 3-5 seconds then it dies why can it be I checked filters plug is good
thats what i was looking for.
i tried that too, i just didnt know what the H and L meant. thank you.
have the part number in the description and a video on it
aw sweet my weedeater was doing the same thing i'll have to try that out.
donyboy when you press the primer button should there b gas comming out where the choke is.if not what do u think is problem
hola disculpa como se llama la herramienta que utilizastes para girar los tornillos.

Rotlerin's advice is way more than I want to get into.. Thanks in advance.
@mccormickryan75 try adjusting the carb and if that doesn't work replace the carb kit
thanks a lot i just watched this video & was able to tune my edger runs great now :-)
Hi.
What i normaly do is turn bothe screws completely in and 1 to 1,5 turn out from there.
it should run not super find ( bot sometime does!!)
But it easier finetuning from there without having to pull 100 times.
A question:
What is the tool called?
Got repairs on a Macculloch chainsaw today and it had the same non slotted screws in is.
I was totaly pissed becouse i had to take the airfilter off screw the carb back on without the filter and adjust it with needlenose pliers.
I salvaged a blower from someones trash, just needed fuel lines. But someone turned both needles all the way in. Any tips on fixing from there??
Hi, I have a mantis tiller. I know now from watching your great videos that I need to put a carb kit on the machine. The other issue I have is that even after replacing the gas lines ,the top line leaks if I have the gas cap too tight,it will siphon fuel out of the tank.Im wondering if i need to trim the hose shorter ? I am at my wits end ! Please help !!
Hey I have the same weed eater and the Carb needs to be adjusted but I don't no how can u maybe give me how many turns out it is for each screw
Nice job Donnie very helpful!
Wish I could find a tool to adjust these gd screws.
How often do you need the single D and double D?
i have a stihl 110 rx weed eater it runs fine when started but it is kinda hard to start. What do u think the problem might be.
Hola amigo tengo la misma máquina pero no me quiere prender cuantas vueltas se le da a los tornillos

How long was the unit stored before you tried using it again? Was it stored with fuel in the tank? What oil are you using? Look at your fuel filter and fuel lines condition, maybe there isn't enough fuel passing through the lines when idling.
Check the air filter and sparkplug condition, and exhaust port for carbon buildup. Make sure you're using a high quality 2-stroke oil like Shindaiwa Red Armor, it has additives that will clean up your engine, and will keep the fuel fresh for up to 2 years (in a proper fuel container). If all the above are ok, then we can begin playing with the carburetor adjustment.

i used i every end of the month i think the fuel lines are i just washed the carburateur when i pull it a few times and then remove the spark plug i see that there is oil on the spark plug is that ok?
Dave GB try turning out slightly the L and H screws on the carb until it throttles up
donyboy73
ok tnx but what do you think it is how come the sparkplug becomes wet of oil
@Thomas0935 you may want to adjust the carb, same principle as in this video
On a troybuilt tb20ss I have 2 round screws w/ off center hole, what tool do l need to adjust them?
Dony I looked on line and mauers 4 you don't seem to carry the carb adjusting tool any longer. Any idea where I could purchase this tool. Thx
