This song had such a profound effect on me for years, I made a promise I will never allow myself to be so naïve again, so unprepared for heartache, so stupid to believe in love in the first place, that I will never even allow that kind of love in again, and this song was my sustenance. Validation for the walls I built. I came here today and I didn't shed a tear, and it was just a little ache, like a memory of pain that once was, a phantom limb... Only because a new love has transpired. One that gives strength rather than sap it out of you. I just wanted to leave a comment to someone who like me identified with every single line a few years ago, and today I stand strong and simply admiring the poetry of a beautifully crafted song.

I love the "fighting for freedom" imagery because of this video's honesty. Our heroine breaks the chain and earns her freedom; however, it comes at a price. The chain breaks, not at the ankle cuff, but at the link cemented into the ground. There is no trauma, love, setback, failure, or triumph that does not have its chains(consequences). We can break free; we can live but the chain will always be there. It's part of us. We grow, we evolve, and we learn but the past always follows.

Some say love is a burning thing
That it makes a fiery ring
Oh but I know love as a fading thing
Just as fickle as a feather in a stream
    See, honey, I saw love,
You see it came to me
It puts its face up to my face so I could see
Yeah then I saw love disfigure me
Into something I am not recognizing
See the cage, it called. I said, come on in
I will not open myself up this way again
Nor lay my face to the soil, nor my teeth to the sand
I will not lay like this for days now upon end
You will not see me fall, nor see me struggle to stand
To be acknowledged by some touch from his gnarled hands
You see the cage it called. I said, come on in
I will not open myself this way again.
You see the moon is bright in that treetop night
I see the shadows that we cast in the cold clean light
I might fear I go and my heart is white
And we race right out on the desert plains all night
So honey I am now, some broken thing
I do not lay in the dark waiting for day here
Now my heart is gold, my feet are right
And I'm racing out on the desert plains all night
So some say love is a burning thing
That it makes a fiery ring
All that I know love as a caging thing
Just a killer come to call from some awful dream
And all you folks, you come to see
You just to stand there in the glass looking at me
But my heart is wild, and my bones are steel
And I could kill you with my bare hands if I was free

Not so much for the words, but the melody captures my heart and soul because it is for someone I love deeply and endlessly, being far apart and not able to touch each other that grips my heartstrings and I only wish someday I can show this person the love I have for him will never die, never fade and I miss him every minute of the day and through eternity. I have never opened up my heart this way to anyone and he has mesmerized me and holds my heart and soul.

I've read that this song was written about being in a relationship with a narcissist. I was always drawn to this song from the first time I heard it. It helped me realize how unhappy I was in the cult I grew up in, and I finally left. Being in a high control cult is very similar to a relationship with a narcissist.
"But I saw love disfigured me into something I am not recognizing." Being in the cult felt like love, but I lost my personality, my uniqueness. I was also forced to do things I didn't want to with threat of my eternal destruction, such as door to door preaching work and cutting off all contact with my own father for 10 years.
"And all you folks, you come to see, you just stand there in the glass looking at me" - This lyric reminds me of the ones still in the cult who are not allowed to talk to me. But its okay, "My heart is wild and my bones are steel."

He starts with the common people's views on love and that it is a burning thing.
Then he adds his own opinion to it, and says that love is weak like a feather and so easily as it came it disappears again, and that love makes one never really go as soon as it had you once.
And he comes to the conclusion that love is rather a cage where you got trapped, and that its not his understanding of love to be consumed by it.
And he says that love has slowly but finaly robbed him out of his strength, and that since he came into contact with love, that it has shaken him to the core.
And that love is weaken you, and that love is rather a killer and once you was dead, it can not weaken you again.
And he dont want to be killed by such a thing that is called love.
Is the song about lovesickness or to be unchained or is this only about a special kind of love?

    • @smartgirl_92
      @smartgirl_92 6 лет назад +14

HelivesbytheEwoks he loves somebody but he doesn't want to because of the things listed above, he wants to leave but he can't, love is a cage and he is captive, that's why he says "l would kill you with my bare hands if I was free".
It is about destructive love, it means, the person he loves is destroying him and he wishes he didn't love her, so he would be able to fight back.

Here's a line of lyric that everyone either doesn't understand or misinterprets. "To be acknowledged by some touch from his gnarled hands" refers to the story of the angel, Gabriel, witnessing the marriage of a man and woman, the priest, touching the man and woman with his gnarled hands, during the ceremony. The line of lyric is referring to him giving up and losing faith on experiencing true love and marriage.

That's really lovely. But it refers to a zookeeper. This song is about a caged gorilla. That's who Zula is. Now, can we extrapolate from Zula's experience in a hideous zoo living behind a pane of glass to some broader observation on the human experience? Probably. But it is, first and foremost, a song about Zula the gorilla, living in inhumane conditions, robbed of her freedom.
