@@abushinthewoods I'm gonna get out there during the week next week. I have a day off for my birthday! Wish me luck! I'm gonna try to hit some of those places you did, with euro rod and dry dropper rod too!
The Good: Best video of Putah I’ve seen in quite awhile. Great job of photographing this beautiful creek and the spectacular trout that make it their home. Thanks for sharing the flies you used. The Bad: River otters! The Ugly: River otters!
Wow that was a trip of a lifetime I'm going to have to learn how to fly fish I use little Jerkbaits and spoons there and do okay but nothing like that. Thanks for sharing!
I tend to use a 9' 6wt because that's my go to on all the big rivers in CA (Yuba, Truckee, Little Truckee, etc.), but you could also use a 9' 5wt effectively. If you are going Euro rod I use a 10.5' 3 wt. You could bump it up to 11', but you'd be even more limited in where you could fish given all the brush and trees and stuff. Good luck and please let me know how it goes!
Hey Bushy. Great day! Thanks for this. You must be mid-river somewhere. How many (if any) takes were on the top dry? I've been trying to get out to Putah and want to use a dry-dropper rig. Also, I thought voluntary closure is Nov. 15; I'm hoping Dec. 1 is correct! Thanks again.
A total of zero. Zero takes on the dry. I thought about moving down to a size 12 or 14 front loader caddis, and I bet I would have gotten some takes, but I was too lazy.
Thanks for the intel. Maybe early or late might make a difference. Guessing you left around 4:30? Anyway, always appreciate your fantastic videos; good to see someone fairly accomplished not afraid to share their knowledge!@@abushinthewoods
@@patsheridan I was out there today and they were rising all over and hitting the dry regularly all day! I used a size 8-10 chubby that got a few strikes, and a mosquito-looking thing that got a bunch of takes. Now's the time!
@@abushinthewoods Thanks for this important information that I wouldn't have known otherwise. For the health of the fishery I will of course wait until after March 1st to fish there. Happy New Year!
@@randytrudeau952 Yes, if you are willing to adopt a very loose definition of "near." Aside from stocked lakes and reservoirs (which I know nothing about), as far as what I know of, it's the American, the Yuba, the Feather, the Lower Sac, or the salt. Each is at least an hour or so drive, at least. If you go farther you can hit the North Fork Yuba, the Middle Feather, the Truckee, the Little Truckee, and the Upper Sac. The bad news is the drive, the good news is those are all fantastic options.
Always love seeing your Putah reports! Can’t wait to get out there with the hopper dropper, even if I’ll still use midges 😉
What a great 2 days on the river! I think my best day on Putah was a 5 fish day! Thanks for sharing!
Get out there again! I bet you'd do better this month.

Beautiful place beautiful fish . Thanks
i got a 30 inch one last year this time
That's awesome! Some of the fish that come up to get their spawn on are just massive. This time of year gettin a 20"+ hog is a reasonable goal.
I’ve fished Putah years ago with a spinning rod, just started fly fishing. What wt and length rod do you use.

November 15 is for some sierra waters, tho now most are all year. Putah is December 1st.

Yup. Out there last Saturday for a few hours - caught three on the dry. Off to the McCloud this weekend, for the first time. @@abushinthewoods
The river is closed until March1st 2024?
It’s a voluntary closure. Local guides and fly shops ask people not to fish it to protect the spawning fish. But, legally, it’s open year round.

@@abushinthewoods any advice on an alternate location near that area for a few hours fishing?
