Macron is only interested in promoting two things, himself, and the people who pull his strings, the EU. He is unpopular in France. This speech is so typical of him - the longer the better, the longer he is the centre of attention. He is so passionate about promoting peace he wants to have a European Army that he can control. I can only sympathise with his audience. This sermon must have seemed interminable.

At 8:15 no matter how you interpret what Macron says, he simply cannot twist the meaning of words to suit what he wants them to mean. "let us not forget .... the sacrifice of those who died for us... what was pure of the lofty ideals of our elders' patriotism ... France as a project.... a bearer of universal values ... because patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism... '.
What he is doing is conflating the patriotism of French elders in the common goal/enemy and shared values, with other nationalities and their patriotism.
Tell me, the Frenchmen who returned to free France on D-Day in WW2, did they go on to fight in Germany?
For Americans, whose homeland has never been seriously threatened, do they not feel they are defending their country and its values, in battles thousands of miles from their soil? And did they not withdraw from Vietnam when this feeling of patriotism was lost?
No, Macron, patriotism does not extend to defending other countries unless your own country's interests are not also on the line.
Nationalism defines Patriotism to within sanctioned borders; THAT is the primary difference.

Many of those French men you mentioned who died for French were born in the colonies in North and Sub Saharan Africa. The same applies for the colonial troops part of the British Army. In effect those troops prove you wrong, they died for values they shared in a country that was not their actual motherland.

A great, respectful speech that shows Macron can become the voice of the EU, when Merkel eventually have to leave politics. We need more young politicians like him, who has an eye to the world and global issues, and who isn't afraid to give voice to criticism of those that seek to undermine the current peaceful order, be it by preaching fear-mongering of immigrants or denials of facts, science or climate change. Without international cooperation the world can't face future challenges.
People aren't afraid of immigrants, people want to preserve their country and their people. Macron, The EU and everyone who chant "Refugees Welcome" are allowing the foreigners invasion, and the death of the white people who kept the peace and stability in the west for the past 70 years. With multiculturalism they destabilize nation states, ruin economies, and profit on the misery of others. They sit in their ivory towers, while we the people of these countries get to live side by side, not with our own people, but with foreigners who look at us with suspicion, and who do not adjust to our way of life, but expect us to adjust to theirs. It is not a functional politic, and it will lead to sorrow down the road, and the cultural demise and diversity that made Europe special.

Unreasonable taxation start most revolutions and when Macron said no more nationalism, I knew it was over for him and his government. You cannot support multiculturalism and open borders and be a patriot. If a country has no shared ideal then it ceases to be a country. If a country is just a mix of all different cultures of different countries then it is not a country is it? It's just a piece of land with a flag.

Wonderful speech. Thank you for reminding us of the huge human cost of war, and the consequences of unchecked nationalism, as well as the importance of understanding our global interconnectedness and need to act in ways that promote dignity and compassion for all. As an American I am ashamed of our president's "America First" agenda. It represents our worst impulses, and dishonors the many sacrifices made by all those who came before us and who gave their lives for the cause of liberty, democracy, equality and respect for all human life. May the spirit invoked by Macron's centennial speech today take hold and live on amongst us all. We are one people - humankind.

The english speaker should really have been given the speech ahead of time. As is demonstrated here, French is very difficult to translate live. Properbly due to the latin syntax.
I watched this in real time on cSpan. I found it profoundly moving to see Theresa May with Brexit, Vladimir Putin with the iron boot of Soviet Union rebuilding, and Dirty Diaper Donnie with his MAGA, being told that militant Nationalism is what brought us the horrors of the War To End All Wars.
I really enjoyed Marcon's speech. It should not be every country for themselves entirely. We are one planet and we should work together.

The goal of listening to this delivery is to "remember" our country's losses and to be thankful for what we have as a family and nation, in spite of all differences. To not be moved with emotion over the loss and victory is to be insensitive and calloused.

(when the EU army is created is it like the federal army and a state army, who becomes the superior army the EU army or the nation state army). If all nation state follow the EU rules then the EU army will over power and over rule any nation state.

The first war war was started because a Serbian nationalist shot dead the heir to the the throne of the Imperialist Austria-Hungarian empire.
This was the beginning of the end of European Imperialism. The onslaught of the various European superpowers - some invading others lands - resulted in utter carnage and the loss of millions of brave and innocent souls.
The cause of this war was the aggressive and selfish nature of supra-national imperialism. It was nothing to do with the action of one patriotic and nationalist Serb who wanted independence for his nation from external oppression. This was merely the “trigger” that fired the “power keg” of military build up that had been happening for many years. Many were spoiling for a fight.
And now one hundred years later, we have an idiot who espouses his ideals of supra-national imperialism and denounces the motivation and forces of national independence. Obviously, there are some people who have not learned the lessons of two world wars. They have not learned that democratic cooperation between nation states is a far better force for peace than the ideal of one “all embracing supra-national empire”.
