Hey Chaps - tempted to buy an M8?
P.S if you're wondering why some shots of the stand are blurry, it's because I'm an idiot 😅 in some shots I hadn't assembled it correctly, so there was a tiny gap. It was my mistake

Well, the inevitable happened... And I had to work from home. After putting it off - because I don't have a separate office space, I bade goodbye to my 40 inch TV in my room, and replaced it with a proper desk and the Samsung M7 Smart Monitor because they sold it as the best of both a TV and a monitor.
Its Samsung display - so even the worst Samsung 4K will beat out majority of players at this price point. Their display technology can't be beat. And so, I was genuinely blown away by how perfect this was to replace my old set up. I now have a great screen to fit 4 windows on the 4K display.
And have a decent display for streaming content! I got the M7 last year and while I wish I had the M8, no doubt when it's due for an upgrade I'll be getting another Smart Monitor!

Hi! I got the M7 (which your review really helped me) and have to say, as a computer monitor and casual movie/show watching, it is great!!! it's ok with consoles on gaming mode. two things i just wished this m8 had were one more input (so i could use three sources without using a switcher) and an output for audio (other than ONLY bluetooth). 120hz is a dream so i dont expect that on this monitor, but if it had the two features I mentioned above, i would totally be more willing to buy it. now, if it did support higher refresh rates on top of those two things...it would be perfect. also, after using a "monitor" with a remote, I cant go back.

I do think this is where future family computers are going to. Monitors that have alot of ways to connect to but also lower end processes on it. For any major processing task you can simply use cloud processing. One feature I think is missing is it being touch screen. Touch screen would allow the screen to be a kitchen/family room hub. (Kind of like alexa shows)

Problem is, the Studio Display only comes in 27 inches and XDR at 5000 dollars plus is above my means. Here comes this 32 inch Samsung, and yeah, its exactly everything that Apple won't give us for displays.

I really couldn’t care less about the “smart” features but I do need a good Mac/PC monitor and most monitors are ugly. This actually is a decent monitor with very good design, good/very good image quality, integrated speakers and above average webcam. Considering the Apple Studio Display is $1600 and yes it’d may be brighter and 5K but is that enough to justify the $900 difference?
This one accepts HDR (although it’s more like a “fake HDR”), it’s bigger and comes with a better camera than the Studio Display, height adjustment (extra $400 in the Studio), double input, Picture in Picture. It really isn’t half bad.

Strongly disagree with the idea that 4k monitors start making sense at 32 inch. They're not TVs, those are meant to be used much closer. That's why Apple has been using 4K+, 5K and 6K for their 24, 27 and 32 inch monitors. You can notice the extra sharpness. I'm currently using a 4k 27 inch, and while I'm very happy, there's margin to improve that can be experienced while using a higher resolution. We're definitely going to see a transition in the future, just like we saw years ago when transitioning 720-1080-1440-4k.

I have a Samsung QN90A, it has awesome rec709 / filmmaker mode but in pc mode it doesn’t have those color profiles. As a tv and my secondary monitor hung above my 27’ 1440p 144hz benq ex2780q I would always prefer the monitor when am working developing apps or working in Lightroom. Apart from college students and people in dorms I see no use for it as a monitor. It’s just a small tv without the tv tuner which frankly no one uses this day and age and probably will be removed in a few years like av and component input sent to the grave.

The problem with this monitor is that a lot of 4k gaming monitors are coming down in price that are better than it. The Gigabyte M32U is 4k 144hz 32 inch with HDR400, HDMI 2.1, color accurate screen and etc and it's actually on sale for $600 USD on amazon right now. While the HDR on both of these are terrible, I think the M8 should have come with a higher refresh screen or better HDR. While I get there are some benefits of having all the smart features, imo a lot of those benefits are mitigated by it's original purpose which is being plugged into a PC. The design certainly looks better than similarly priced gaming monitors though.

If you think streaming from a web browser is the same as from a smart tv then you probably have never used smart tv or similar devices. Most web browser do not support 4k and you have to use Edge for windows or Safari for macOS, also no web browser support 5.1 or dolby atmos, furthermore to my eyes, the picture quality from a web browser is worse than smart tv. While the M8 only have 60hz, it has a remote (way better to use than mouse/keyboard for movies/shows), contrast ratio is 3000:1 vs 1100:1 of the Gigabyte, 400 nits sustain brightness, smart tv/home included, miles ahead in design, all sort of build-in features, webcam. The price difference is only $100, I think it is a better value monitor.

My elderly parents are cord-cutters. They have DSL internet, but they haven't had cable TV in years. They watch alot of RUclips videos, and they use RUclips to get their news. (PBS Newshour, etc.) They are doing this on an aging Intel Core i5-powered 13-inch MacBook Pro, which is getting very long-in-tooth (battery is shot) and will eventually have to be replaced. I have long thought about finding ways to improve their setup. I'm not 100% sold, but Samsung's M8 may be a crucial component. My most important questions are:
1: Can the M8 be wall-mounted like a TV? If it can, what kind of wall-mounting kit can be used?
2: If the M8 is used as a stand-alone computing device, (a: how do you use it to access Microsoft Office without a computer? Does it need a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse added to do this? (b: Can the M8 be used to access social media, such as RUclips and Facebook? (c: Can the M8 connect to a WiFi printer in our home, to print out documents? and (d: Can the M8 be used to view and print PDF files?
3: I my parents wanted to use their laptop through the M8, how does it connect between a Mac and the monitor? Does the webcam work through this connection?
4: If they had an M8 hanging on a wall, how could external speakers be mounted?

I don't have a 4k monitor but I do have a 1080P acer Monitor To get sound on your monitor I managed to hook up a sony cd bombox it has a audio in plug All I need is an accessory to add extra hdmi port for the ps4 and Amazon firestick It is a hard experiments to do. The only things I don't like about Monitors on like tvs is the Matt screens But everything else of the monitor as a TV works better than a TV itself.

I don't get all of these companies not building a decent monitor. This plastic thing will never win over a mac user. At least not me. Why not charge $300 more and make this thing aluminum like the huawei mateview, and sell it like crazy for the people not so exited about the Apple display? Great Review BTW, as always.

    Hi Tech Chap,
I've seen this, and also have seen the video of the Huawei Viewmate. I like the looks of both and as for aspect ratio, both are good I think.
I like the aspect ratio of the viewmate, but I like the size of this M8.
I do not need the TV part of the M8 so I think that leaves built quality and screen quality. For productivity: which one would you pick?

    • @akinsoyleyen
      @akinsoyleyen 2 года назад +1

Im exactly in the same boat as you.... I dont need TV specs ; i will use it as a multipurpose monitor at home. The viewmate at least where i live is significantly cheaper. about %35 cheaper. I saw both of them in person and they both look great but for productivity ; i truly think 4:3 aspect ratio is better. I like the Samsung ecosystem tho ; i use Samsung Galaxy Book 2 pro as well as S22 Ultra; so im torn between the 2.

I feel like the Smart Monitor should have a way to connect to a Samsung Smart TV so it can use a coaxial/arial cable for over the air TV, like HD HomeRun in the US, only it's built in to a TV.

It feels like Samsung has specifically told reviewers not to mention this is a VA panel and not IPS. I would hate for someone to buy this to use as a TV and quickly notice its unusable at sharp angles due to the VA panels terrible viewing angles.
